It's official now: Ministers' relatives and companions can avail free air travel.

From now on, ministers will be able to take "any number of companions or relatives" along by air for free with Parliament giving nod to a bill providing for such facilities to them. The bill was approved by Rajya Sabha today.

As if they weren't doing this already. Only it's just now official. Words fail me.

Isn't this applicable only on the national carrier ie: Air India?

It says "Ministers will be able to take "any number of companions or relatives" along by air for free" and then it says that "the bill entitles Ministers to take along 'any number of companions or relatives' by air at the same rates at which travelling allowances were payable to them and their family."

First it says for free and then it talks about "the same rates at which travelling allowances were payable to them . . . ." This doesn't make any sense. Does this mean that the GOI will pay the airline the Govt fixed rate for the family member as it would have paid for the Minister?

And then it says that MPs already enjoy this privilege!

Well, is it any wonder that they don't want change in Air India? Its pretty much the air limo service for the babu/neta/mantri cabal!

Free means GOI will pay for the minister and his/her companions for travel. This could include if they are travelling by AI or other airlines, if AI does not fly there.

What about upgrades ? If the minister manages to get a free upgrade due to his/her status on AI then the companions get it too ? That would be a major revenue loser for AI.

Ha! Exactly!

If this is part of some Mallya-Goyal initiated conspiracy (tou know, the one where they send crores of rupees to Patel, who colludes with them to bring AI down) then I wholly approve! Send AI to its grace. At any cost. Just do it quickly!
