Mumbai: Eight thousand rooms in 14 new three-, four- and five-star hotels will come up around the Mumbai airport as part of the plan to set up a "hospitality district".

Industry sources said the Mumbai International Airport Ltd -- the Hyderabad-based GVK Group company which is developing the airport -- has completed a strategic assessment of the project. The next step will be to name intermediaries who will conduct the bidding process to sell the land.

Unlike the Delhi airport, where the hospitality district is coming up as a cluster, in Mumbai the hotels would be set up in a 4-5 km radius of the airport. The Delhi airport is operated by the Delhi International Airport Ltd (Dial), in which the Hyderabad-based GMR Group has a majority stake.

"The scenario with Dial is different because vacant land is available contiguous to the airport," said a source.

"Consultants HVS International and Jones Lang LaSalle Meghraj are among those pitching to lead-manage the bidding process. A decision is expected in a week," said the source.

The agency that gets the transaction mandate from Mial would chalk out financial details and then invite bids for the hotel sites.

The successful bidders are expected to be finalised before March 31 next year.

The area around Sahar airport (CSIA) is a gigantic dump that smells like the collective daily excrement of a million+ people who live in the vicinity. The road from the Western Express highway looks like something in Bhagalpur district after the dacoits and bad weather ravaged it. Before they decide to call this area a "hospitality district," they should clean it up and no amount of hotels will change the general filthiness of the area.
