All flights in and out of the UK and several other European countries have been suspended as ash from a volcanic eruption in Iceland moves south.
Up to 4,000 flights are being cancelled with airspace closed in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark among others.
The UK's air traffic control service (Nats) said no flights would be allowed in UK airspace until at least 0700 BST on Friday amid fears of engine damage.
Safety group Eurocontrol said the problem could persist for 48 hours.
The volcano is still spewing ash and the wind direction is expected to continue bringing clouds into UK and European airspace for some time to come.
The UK's airspace restriction was the worst in living memory, a Nats spokesman said. Some 600,000 people are thought to have been affected.

http://www.livemint.com/2010/04/15221157/Air-India-only-airline-to-take.html

Three flights, one each of Virgin Atlantic, Kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airways, to the Heathrow airport were cancelled after the flight operations there were badly affected due to ash from the volcano

Question....

Does it make sense for Air India to operate its flights when all others have been cancelled and then get diverted to Paris and then have the flight grounded there as well after the French airspace closes. And also why divert to Paris rather than Frankfurt when AI can have some officials there.
Plus .. Wouldnt it have cost less for AI to pay for accommodation at Delhi rather than at Paris or maybe returned back to Delhi if the NOTAM hadn't reached AI on time

I was checking 9W's website and apparently Jet is running extra flights to accommodate the stranded passengers and the flights reach at like 2 am UK time which is obviously special case airport operation..
Another thing is what's the difference between a flight cancelled and a flight being indefinitely delayed

Weird thing cam to my mind...How far is it possible and legal for a commercial airliner to fly at sub 20000ft heights.. Since the extent and intensity of the ash cloud is going from bad to worse isn't it possible for a limited number of flights fly under 20000ft in the affected regions and after crossing it resume normal operations just to clear some of the backlog...I mean technically its possible since the problem zone starts at 20000 to 21000 ft and above up to 40000 ft. Basically by-passing under the cloud rather than around it saving loads of fuel as well if operations were to resume..Couple of thoughts from on an over imaginative Friday night Smile

Just got back from doing CAI-JFK on MS, and the flight hugged the North African coastline before turning northwest in Spain and proceeding to NY, all in just 11:35.

JFK was deserted today, with no line for take-off and a few grounded KLM and Swiss jets sitting on the tarmac.

Also, the departure screens in CAI showed many more cancellations than normal, and the only flights operating to Europe were flights to ATH, MAD, and LIS.

As per the met officers who went on board the air sampling flight 2 days back, they found 3 distinct layers of Contaminants below 10000 feet over central England. So i guess the only option is to wait it out and pray it stops soon...or more importantly, pray that Katla does not wake up.

Better to await clear weather.

Interesting developments, the amount of money that airlines are losing there must be pressure building up to get aircraft into the air.

Eyjafjallajökull frá Hvolsvelli

This is the link to a webcam pointed at the volcano. It seems to have stopped spewing ash though it still is erupting. Have a look.

Since the roster was already screwed thanks to the ash, I decided to spend the rest of the week with the wife and kids.

Landed into Delhi this morning and saw an Air france 340 parked on W, a BA 777, AI 777 & 9W 330 all ducks in a row in the taxiway in front of the cargo terminal. Since we used 29 for arrivals, I couldn't see what else was there. Sucks to be sitting as a passenger with a pigeon hole to peep through.

It seems the Ash is back

Irish airspace to close from 7am

Quote:

Monday, 3 May 2010 21:19

The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) has said Irish airspace will close from 7am tomorrow because of an ash cloud drifting down from Iceland.

The decision will be reviewed at 1pm tomorrow.

Intending passengers are advised to check their airlines' websites for more information.

Donegal Airport closed earlier and two Aer Arann flights were cancelled.

Almost 440 flights were due to depart and fly into Dublin Airport throughout the day, with more from Shannon, Cork and regional airports.

Over-flights of Ireland from the UK and Europe will not be impacted, the IAA said, adding flights in mainland Europe will operate normally.

Earlier, Eamon Brennan, IAA chief executive, said winds had already pushed part of the volcanic ash cloud down over part of the centre of Ireland.

'The latest information we have is that some of the denser volcanic ash, that's the no-fly zone, is over the Donegal area and we are concerned about the north-easterly winds moving this down over the rest of the country,' he told RTÉ radio.

'At the moment we have a slither of denser ash over the midlands and if this continues for the next number of hours we have no option, based on the new regime imposed in Europe last week, except to impose a no-fly zone and a 60-mile buffer zone which would effectively close Shannon and Dublin airports.'

Scotland also facing disruption

The skies over parts of Scotland have also been closed, Britain's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said tonight.

The ash is forecast to exceed the safe level agreed by the CAA and airlines in the Outer Hebrides tomorrow.

Airspace over the Outer Hebrides was closed to all operations at 6pm following advice from Britain's Met Office.

The closures could see flights to and from the Western Isles cancelled tomorrow, but the situation will be constantly reviewed.

Passengers are advised to check with their airline before travelling.

All flights in and out of Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic will resume at 1300 BST after being grounded owing to a fresh volcanic ash threat.

Airspace over Scotland's Outer Hebrides will reopen at the same time after closures to Tiree, Barra and Benbecula airports plus Campbeltown in Argyll.

Services to and from Northern Ireland and the Republic were cancelled from 0700 BST by aviation authorities.
