|
|
Hi Everyone
Thanks to some efforts by Nimish and team (Photoyogi, Aiel, myself), we have received support from BIAL and they have agreed for issue of spotter ID badges for approved spotting at Bengaluru airport.
First thanks to the airport authorities, second to the efforts of all four folks.
Needless to say, BIAL is expecting us the Bangalore Spotters Group (BSG), to pre-screen spotters and recommend for issue of ID. Any breech of conduct will reflect poorly on this fledgling effort. So, we propose to use AI.NET as the starting point, it's a close knit "family" and we are all friends or friends of friends.
To obtain the ID badge each spotter needs to submit :
1. Front 2 and Last 2 pages of his/her passport 1a. In absence of a passport, a police verification certificate from the police station covering your present address 2. Four passport size photographs with a white background. (Please write your name at the back with a pencil) 3. A request letter to BSG with your personal details (Name, present address, permanent address, phone numbers (landline and mobile), e-mail address) 4. Each ID will cost Rs. 100 and is payable by DD. So I propose to make one DD for all of us, and collect cash later. 5. Youngsters under 18, please also submit a permission letter from a parent
Please send your application kits to me

devesh at deveshagarwal dot com
Cut off date for the first batch of applications is 22/May/09.
Comments please ? Hopefully, once this effort takes off, it can be replicated at other airports around India. _________________ ----------------------

Hi Devesh - this is brilliant news. Unfortunately I'm in GVA and not able to rush my kit over to you right away, but I'll do that on my return next weekend.
Many many thanks to Devesh's tireless efforts, he's been single-handedly chasing the BIAL team to get approval for our harmless hobby. And I think we're blessed in a team at BIAL (starting from the CEO downwards) who look for solutions rather than causing more problems.
I do hope that BIAL informs the security guards around about allowing photography with that ID card .
Once this becomes operational in BLR (not that I doubt it in any way, but additional time might be needed for clearance of our ID cards etc.), then we should try and document this in a manner that can be replicated by other airports (at least the private and "less sensitive" ones like HYD). It would be awesome if this could further be done at BOM/DEL as well!
However I would suggest that folks at other airports wait to see this truly operational at BLR and then approach their own airports. Mainly for the reason that I don't really want the DGCA or BCAS or another body waking up and blocking this before it takes off, and once operational with BIAL issued ID cards, it will be easy to present a full case study. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

So long as you have an Indian passport (preferably with a BLR address) I think it should be fine. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Excellent news... what about having BIAL put links to members' photos
taken at BLR, on their website? I'm not aware of the legalities involved,
but this will give a wider awareness to planespotting as a hobby.
Cheers, Sumantra. |

Excellent work, Devesh!
A few questions for you:
1) Can people living outside of Bangalore (e.g. Mumbai/Delhi, etc) apply?
2) What does a spotter ID card entitle one to do? (access to certain areas or just hassle free spotting - although the latter is more than enough )
3) Can you give me the details of this whole program - how did you approach BIAL, what credentials did you submit, etc. We can try doing a similar thing for BOM, and cite the example of BLR.

I do not know about people out of Bangalore. I will find out and come back. The ID badge gives access only till the airside perimeter. Beyond that requires BCAS permission and I believe there is a procedure to apply for a one day airside pass which gives access to the apron.
I know the senior management at BIAL, and I built on those relations. It helps that they were all very helpful and positive. Still took more than 3~4 months of constant work.
As Nimish suggests, let us use Bangalore as a pilot and establish it for 6 months. That will give you a case study to approach MIAL, DIAL, RGIA etc. At RGIA I have a friend working and can refer you.
VT-ALA should also be able to help.
The legacy airports offer a challenge since there is no outer and inner perimeter as at BIA and RGIA. As I gather, Jari Mari is currently under Mumbai Police control not the airport.
IMHO at MIAL, what you should push for is a viewing gallery. Show the airport authorities the monetary benefit. Without WIFM no airport would be interested, most certainly Sanjeev Reddy _________________ ----------------------

That already is. You can officially write to BCAS and seek permission for tarmac photography. If you get the permission BIA will issue you an apron badge. _________________ ----------------------

Just a reminder, the BIAL folks were rather surprised that no spotter applications had come in, considering the pressure I put on them to push this through.
Come on folks, help out here.
Also, just received word on the required documentation.
1. Machine printed passport (hand written ones before 2003 are not acceptable)
2. A proof of current address (in case it is different from the one on your passport). Bank statement, BSNL bill, water bill, ration card, PAN card, etc.
3. A police verification certificate of you at your current address (in case different from the address on your passport)
4. 4 passport sizes photos of you with a white background.
Balance is the same. Basically the passport must be machine printed not handwritten. For foreign citizens (NRIs), a PIO card or OCI card copy or Visa copy and local Driver's License copy must accompany the passport. _________________ ----------------------

Just received this e-mail from BIAL which is self explanatory about the ID cards.
Quote: | The BIAL Management has reviewed and considered your request to issue a badge / card as an identity so that the G4S guards are aware up to where all you may be allowed within the BIAL area as some areas are secured and not recommended except for people who need to be there.
You may kindly submit the following document to enable us to process the identification badges/cards
• Request for issuance of Badges on a Organization/Club/Association letter head.
• 4 Passport Size photographs of each individual.
• Photo Copy of passport duly attested by a Class I gazetted officer or police Verification from Local Police Station.
• A profile with details of each individual with 02 references.
• Cost of Printing and Stationary for each card @ Rs.75/- per person( adhoc to be confirmed)
The processing time will be 10-12 days , Request whenever you intend to visit the airport before the badges are issued you may please call on 66782421 or 66782427 and inform your desired location and time so that the G4S Guards can be briefed accordingly.
|
Kindly prepare the papers accordingly. _________________ ----------------------

Not permitted. With permission there is a charge which is quite high at BOM per photo.

Devesh,
I just have one clarification, how to go about with the request letters? The BIAL management mentions this:
"Request for issuance of Badges on a Organization/Club/Association letter head"
I have the other documents ready, just confused with the request letter.

Firstly, Congrats Devesh and other folks who got this thing done.
Questions for the BIAL Spotters:
-- Is BIAL the only Admin agency involved in there? (We listed out some 11 of them, here at BOM! )
-- Under what Organization/Club/Association will you all be applying under? |

Hi Louis,
Just send it in on plain paper for now. Devesh can put together a dummy letter head for the "Bangalore spotters club", and he can put in a forwarding note for all the applications together...

1) Well - hopefully BIAL will coordinate with all the "other" agencies involved.
2) A organization called "Bangalore spotters club" or something similar. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Just a clarification on the documents required:
1. Notarized copy of the first two and last two pages of a machine printed passport (if the passport has your current address, then no need for (2))
2. Notarized copy of a document having your current address (e.g. phone bill)
3. Personal details (name, current address, permanent address, date of birth, contact details etc) on a sheet of paper
4. 4 passport sized photos (at least one on a white background)
5. 100 Rs.
Please note that the notarization need NOT be done by a Grade 1 officer. _________________ My Flickr photos

Hi Nilanjon,
I think attestation is required. In the previous post, nitin pointed out that a Grade 1 attestation is not required, but I guess you need to attest your passport copies by a gazetted officer.

The first set of ID badges have come in and have been despatched to 8 members.
Nilanjon, the details of requirements including attestation are in the form, and let us please keep BSG internal matters on the e-group. No point in using a public forum like AI.net for internal questions.
