Very informative, thanks, really grateful for this.
A few points wrt iairline operators flying the Indian flag -
a) The current levels of labour unrest, cockpit, cabin and ground, at some of the European and American airlines, can only make airlines from India more attractive for services to/from India. Who will want to fly the surly lot at BA if Jet Airways is available on the same route? Both AI and 9W have become famous for feeding people in Economy three times on a LHR-India flight, while BA and VS give one measly meal followed by some crumbs even in their Premium Economy/WTP classes. And you have to be at LHR Terminal-3 to see how 9W staff does meet and greet even for Economy passengers, departure as well as arrivals.
b) With a bit of effort, DEL and maybe even BOM can become transit hubs like Singapore for passengers heading from/to third countries. After all, if SQ and CX can be big players on the strength of Singapore and Hong Kong airports, then it takes just a wee bit of effort and a lot of guts to see DEL do the same. (BOM has space issues and is generally . . .slack)
c) Jet Airways has a few B-737/800 already in "all economy" configurations, and it may not surprise me if some of the wide-bodies come equipped for short haul domestic/international operations with "all economy" configurations. Furthermore, there is always the option of freighter/combi to absorb some more of the new wide-bodies. Here you may like to see an airline from taiwan, EVA, and its strategies.
d) A lot of calculations will change the moment the first of the newer airlines goes under. Amongst other things, the risk of all sorts of websites selling inventory, has not yet been defined. So that's another thing that will work in favour of airlines which have consciously chosen to get closer directly to the end customer and her finance manager.
e) In LCCs, the steady and reliable growth of Indigo does not feature in this report, as yet. In terms of order book alone, this is another airline to watch out for.
To sum up - the report is good on the analysis front, but slightly short on actual observations. And it makes no comment on the expense side - on how simply some airlines are better at cutting costs without cutting corners than others.
But all the same, great report, and thanks for pointing us to it. |

It will be a bit dicey to compare the hubs of SQ and CX with that of any indian airports sheers because of the geographical nature of our country.
Unlike HK, SIN ,KUL or BKK in india we have a number of metropolitan cities with each one of them actualy wanting to be a hub of some or the other airline.
Hence in order to become a real hub an airport need to have an airline which wud provide a good global connectivity. We are growing and so is the aviation bubble bt then we need massive investments too. And that kind of global connectivity is nt being provided till nw nt even by AI _________________ Expeditors- You'd be surprised how far we will go for you www.expeditors.com |
