Cooch Behar airport to be operational by Nov 2007

NDTV Profit says that the AAI, after a test flight with an ATR-42, will declare Cooch Behar airport opeartional from November.
The ATR took off from Kolkata, reached Cooch Behar and returned.

The runway is now 3,500 feet long and will be extended to 4,500 feet.

Navigational and communication aids have been installed.

The IAF has also indicated that it would like Cooch Bhar to have a 10,000 feet runway eventually as it would like to use it in a emergency and as a line of defence against China. Air India says it will be interested in looking at Airbus operations.

It will be really helpful for North Bengal when important flights take off from Cooch Behar.
It will be really helpful after extension.

It used to have Dakota flights in the 1960s-probably to Calcutta and Bagdogra.

As far as my Grey cells tell me, Jalpaiguri is a hrs drive from Cooch behar and I doubt if you have any major airports nearby. Technically it should serve north bengal and west assam, where we have large business population

Went around that area as a 5 year old in 91. Far as I can remember Bagdogra was around a 3 hr drive from Cooch Behar.

Nearest Airport is Hasimara. An IAF base. Bagdogra is abt 2 hrs by Train and I presume abt 3 hrs by road. Beautiful scenery i must say.

Cheers
