Hey Guys,

After months of pondering I have finally decided that I need to buy that camera so that my DSC-P72 may be laid to rest.

Dont want to spend too much on a DSLR as I am only learning this fine art and nowhere skilled to use and maintain the SLR.

SO am looking at the range just below. Have shortlisted the following

1) Fuji S6500fd

2) Canon S3IS

3) Sony DSC-H9

I would like to ask for the recommendations of fellow ai.nutters in the know and also their reasons for the same.

Cheers

the380 recently bought a S3. You could ask him for his review.
The S3 seems to be very popular in India.

Yep, I would recommed the S3IS as well. The Canon lens is simply amazing.

I use an S2IS and the results are pretty clear for everyone to see. Wink

I'd suggest you either stretch your wallet a bit or wait a while and go for entry level DSLR. For example, a brand new Nikon D40 could be had for US$600.

Aseem does the price include lens or is it body only?

OK I checked up. The Nikon D40X is out here and a kit costs NZD1899 which iis about USD1500. So too expensive.

The Canon S5IS is out which costs NZD700. Which is an option I am looking into because of people recommending the S3IS

Akl:

What you have to keep in mind is that the S3IS like the other models you mentioned above will limit your flexibility. Specially in Aviation photography, alot has to do witht he focal length of your lens. And there may be many instances where you will find the power of all of the above to come out a little short.

The big advantage of a DSLR is that you have all the flexibility you want through the ability to purchase different lenses. It might , infact, if you are considering photogrphy as a major hobby to go in for a DSLR. If you do, i would recommend you decide if you want a Nikon Base or a Conon base. See the thing is, you can buy the Canon 350D (a decent camera) comparable to the D40 of Nikon, and but a good lens, like the 70-200, you will also get the stock lens for your wide side of the spectrum (18-55 or so).

The good part of DSLRS is that you can sell your body (like i did when i changed from the 350D to the 400D) and the lens base stays the same. Many Nikon hardliners will not agree with me, but alot of the professional photographers are seeming to shift to Canon bases. My whole base is Canon, i have the 70-200 F4L lens and the stock 18-55mm. I plan to buy two more lenses like the 17-50 (or something like that) and the 100-400mm canon. The other option i am thinking is the Sigma 50-500mm, this is a real powerful lens, (thought a tad bit slow) but i want to use it for my contrail shots. ITs powerful enough to be able to make out the reg number of the aircraft flyign at cruise.

But then again, you have to decide two things:

1. Money you want to spend (SLR's will be more expensive, but you can cover more of the spectrum through additional lenses{by no means cheap though, but look at it more as an investment}).

2. If you want to expand in the future with your photography, if yes, then a DSLR is for you. I t will take you a few days to get used to it, but its definately worth it.

Hope this was of some help.

Thanks for the Advice Deaphen.

I understand and accepted what you are trying to imply. However, I am only starting to learn about photography and want to develop it into a hobby. Since I dont know too much I am not certain whether its right to buy an SLR straight away or two learn a few more things first.

So still debating. But thanks for your post.

Cheers

If possible, check out at Hill and Stewert. They usually have good deals in digital cameras.

Also, there is absolutely no harm buying your first camera off eBay from a reputed autioner. Nitin is right, if possible start off with DSLR as the flexibility is unmatched.

In my opinion, just go for the DSLR, its like hypothetically if you put your baby into a kiddy pool, he really wont learn how to swin unless you throw him into the main pool and make him fend for himself!

So if you buy a DSLR, it will be hard, but atleast you will be learning what photography REALLY is, no offence to the other P&S users, but a DSLR will make you work and really learn photography!

Buying a P&S, it will last just a few years after which you will want to move on, but hte DSLRS, you can always be on the top with just a new lens!

Thats exactly the reason I am planning to graduate from a P&S to a DSLR next year.

digital photography is not going beyond 10MP, so buy any box from eBay that gives that many MPs, and then keep on buying better lens with time.

Umm! D40X kit is about USD 800. D80 is 1300. ( can get 50-200 bucks cheaper at amazon, etc.)

Also consider Olympus SP-550 UZ or SP-510 UZ.

Thanks,

If you live in Mumbai then go where the whole of Mumbai goes to buy mobile phones & other imported stuff - ALFA, Irla - Ville Parle (West).

Nikon D40 - Rs. 23k
Nikon D40x - Rs. 27k & so on

I just went there with Yash on Saturday (23rd June) & bought him his Canon PowerShot S3 for Rs. 14k.

All items bought from there - NO BILL & ONLY 2/3 DAYS TESTING WARRANTY.

But as long as you know what you are buying & you trust your product, then just go for it. So does half of Mumbai (their clientele).

Best time to go there would be morning 11am, as afterwards its just like Churchgate Station at peak hours.

BUT IN TERMS OF ADVICE, ONLY IF YOU ARE SHORT IN TERMS OF BUDGET THINK PowerShot S3 BUT OTHERWISE, NO QUESTION - DSLR IS THE THING TO INVEST IN.

Just went spotting with (iflytb20) Raj " r " (JetPhotos.net http://jetphotos.net/showphotos.php?userid=22624) & once i took over his Canon EOS 400D to shoot, it was just unbelievable.

The ease, the comfort, the flexibility, speed & the raw power of the camera made you feel one with the mechanism, as if - your eye is the camera/lens & your blink is the click of the camera.
Left me in complete awe of the gadget.

And if you live in South Bombay then go to Heera-Panna, Mahalaxmi. Just went there tonight for some shopping & Nikon D40 - Rs. 21k at some shops & Rs.20.2k at others.
Same for most other cams & DSLR's 2 to 5% price up or down among different shops.
But the same rules as with Alfa apply - 3/4 DAYS TESTING WARRANTY.

I live only 20000kms from Mumbai. Bit of a long drive wouldnt you agree mate.

LOL thanks for the info anyway and 27k for the D40X is fab. But I cant wait tht long till I get to Mumbai which most likely wont be until Jan-ish

No they aren't.... but shops like Alfa do not pay the various taxes that are levied by the government...dats y they end up 6000-7000 bucks short of the original price...

The S5 is not available in India as of yet but a direct conversion from USD shows it is about 20k.

However places like Alpha they can call for it from Dubai

How do you know that? Just because it has a higher number doesn't mean that it is a better Camera. You have to compare the quality and noise levels of pictures before coming to a conclusion.

Hello AKL,

My first post on Airliners-India, so hello everybody!

Back on topic, add me to the list of users that suggest going for a DSLR, as I would strongly recommend one as well. My kit consists of a dusty, scratched up old Canon 10D with a 70-300mm Canon lens and a 170-500mm Sigma and both have served me rather well. You have the option of using it in full manual mode (thought spotters rarely do) or in auto-focus mode, where just set her to 'P' and work your way up from there, so you learn as you go. The 350D is not a bad option, and it may be cheaper to go with that since the 400D is on the market. There is a Sigma 18-200mm lens available somewhere out there (not from Bombay, so I don't know), which, though I haven't tried it, sounds like a nice, versatile lens which you can use for almost anything including spotting.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Kamlesh

There is no question about that, go for the dslr because you would buy it eventually after the P&S. If you buy it the first time you can use the P&S money for a good lens.

Many people have adviced against the D40/x as you cannot use the high end Nikon lenses on it. Go for the D80 atleast or any of the Canon Slr's.

If zealand is not cheap then try buying from some duty free shop while travelling SIN or DXB even better.

starting a new thread with a poll about PnS and DSLR......

regarding D40, the problem is that you cannot use older generation lenses that don't have their own motor.....pretty much all the current productions lens will work......I myself plan to go for D50 off eBay as I have an old lens that I would want to keep and also have commonality with my manual SLR.....for those on budget, buying off reputed seller off eBay is a good deal.....if one has the money D80 with 135mm lens is a joy...
