June 23rd 2007 marks the 22nd anniversary of the bombing of AI-182. The victims' families and relatives have waited for 22 years yet the bombers have no been sentenced. My heart goes out to all those who lost their family members and friends in this tragedy.

Here's a tribute written by Esther Venketeswaran who lost her father, Trichur Krishnan Venketeswaran in the bombing.

Quote:
The silent waves lap peacefully along the faded misty shore,

In endless greeting to a land of ancient lore.

Along a lonely, country road - extends a serene, green arm,

To lead a passing traveler to an event memorial of some great harm. There ... outstretched upon the sea ...

An arc of rock recites the names

Of souls that died on June twenty-three

A lashing gale will sometimes wail along the coast ...

Then drops the rain as if from some angelic host.

A small, narrow finger traces the name to whom she belongs,

Father, now victim, to one of man's tremendous wrongs.

A single rose she places at the site,

Observing the memory of that fateful night.

And the roaring seas one day shall give up her dead,

When the command comes forth from the Living Head.

For now the waters of the Emerald Isle,

Shall be.

While yet the dead doth sleep awhile.

VT-EFO will not go down in history untold.

Air-India Flight 182 was a Boeing 747 that exploded on June 23, 1985 while at an altitude of 31,000 feet (9500 m) above the Atlantic Ocean, south of Ireland; all 329 on board were killed, of whom 82 were children and 280 were Canadian citizens.

Up until September 11, 2001, the Air India bombing was the single deadliest terrorist attack involving aircraft. It is also the largest mass murder in Canadian history. It occurred within an hour of the Narita Airport Bombing.

The Air India B747-237B “Emperor Kanishka” flew on a Montréal-Mirabel International Airport, – London Heathrow Airport – Palam International Airport, Delhi – Sahar International Airport, Bombay route.

The BC Crown's trial of those accused of the bombing, Ripudaman Singh Malik and Ajaib Singh Bagri, is known as the "Air India Trial". The investigation and prosecution took almost twenty years and was the costliest in Canadian history at nearly CAD $130 million. On March 16, 2005, the accused were found not guilty by Justice Ian Josephson and were released. The only person convicted of involvement in the bombing was Inderjit Singh Reyat. On February 10, 2003, Reyat pled guilty to manslaughter in constructing the bomb used on Flight 182 and received a five-year sentence. The length and cost of the trial, and subsequent verdict have been a source of great controversy in Canada.

Production starts on Air India documentary
Canadian Press

June 21, 2007 at 5:13 PM EDT

TORONTO — A documentary about the Air India tragedy is set to begin filming next month.

Flight 182 will be directed by Vancouver-raised Sturla Gunnarsson and produced by David York. On Thursday, the pair announced that they have signed a contract with CBC-TV, which is commissioning the piece.

The Air India disaster took place 22 years ago this Saturday. Various memorials are planned to honour the 329 victims of the terrorist bombing off the coast of Ireland on June 23, 1985.

“This is a critical film for our country,” Gunnarsson, who also directed the epic film “Beowulf & Grendel,” said in a release.

“It was Canada's first devastating experience with international terrorism and we still haven't really come to terms with it. We've heard about it in fragments of personal loss, conspiracy theory, erased surveillance tapes, bungled investigations and cultural divide but now, after 22 years, three trials and two commissions a coherent narrative has emerged. The time has come to tell this story.”

The two-hour doc will include interviews with those directly involved in the events, re-enactments and archival footage, an examination of intelligence and profiles of the victims.

A broadcast date is being worked out with CBC-TV for early 2008.

Flight 182 is produced by 52 Media and Eurasia Motion Pictures with the participation of CBC-TV and The Canadian Television Fund.

On a personal note, lost an uncle in this disaster.

Air India Memorial Unveiled In T.O.

Saturday June 23, 2007
CityNews.ca Staff
A memorial for victims killed in the Air India bombing was unveiled Saturday at Humber Bay Park, marking the 22nd anniversary of the tragedy.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Premier Dalton McGuinty and Toronto Mayor David Miller joined more than 200 people attending the ceremony.

Harper said the Air India bombing reminds us that our country is not immune to terrorism, "On that dark day, we got a shocking glimpse of what lurks at the core of some of our fellow human beings." He added that this is a place where all Canadians can come to pay their respects and remember those who were victims of terror.

The memorial is made up of a sundial, gardens and a granite inscription wall that bears the names of the 329 people who lost their lives while travelling on Air India Flight 182. It also commemorates two baggage handlers killed by a bomb in a related attack at an airport in Japan.
