Deep discount airline WOW air has plans to fly to DEL. Not sure if they can offer any more cheaper fares than Chinese carriers and TK from USA/Canada to DEL. So now there is more one option to fly to/from USA ultra cheap. |

WOW flies to cities that do not have *cheap* chinese connections yet - BOS for example.
And others that might never have competing carriers to Asia - Cleveland, Cincinnati, Detroit.. |

Delhi adds another unique connection – WOW air to start flights to Reykjavik from 6th December
Early morning on Tuesday 8th May, I got an intimation that WOW air will announce its Delhi operations on May 15th. Continuing with the policy of not “breaking news” till things are in public domain, I did not tweet until somebody else did. The reaction to the news was “WOW”. This will be the airlines first and only destination in India and adds another feather in the cap for Delhi International Airport which boasts of maximum connections by airport from India.
This morning RoutesOnline released the schedule for the flights. The airline will launch the route with A330-300 aircraft from 6th December 2018, operating thrice a week (Tue,Thu,Sat) and increasing the frequency to five times a week (All days except Fri & Sun) starting 7th January 2018. The aircraft is configured in 345 seats comprising a small section of premium seats which the airline brands as WOW premium.
WW322 KEF1145 – 0315+1 DEL
WW321 DEL0700 – 1320KEF
WOW air is an Icelandic low cost carrier which started operations in 2012. The airline, which took over Iceland Express’s operation, expanded to North America in 2015 with services to USA followed by those to Canada in 2016. The airline added A330s in its fleet to launch flights to San Francisco and Los Angeles. Average fleet age of the airline is less than 3 years. Known for its quirkiness, like registering their aircraft as MOM, DAD,BRO, SIS, LUV, DOG and many such, the airline is looking to expand aggressively in 2018.
The airline flies to 14 destinations in North America and that includes some of the cities which have large traffic from India like San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dallas, Washington D.C., New York and Chicago. For the airline to start creating a hub for long haul operations, New Delhi will be a great beginning since it fits into the optimum range of the airlines A330s in fleet. What would have tilted the Asian station selection in favor of New Delhi is the growing leisure traffic out of India and Delhi’s rise as a regional hub.

Why does the aircraft sit in Delhi for more than three hours?

Plus I think it is good for a ULCC, just like AI, to have a bit longer turn around when they are susceptible to delays. Plus 7am departure is way better than a 6am. So it's a A330 DEL-KEF but then A321 to New York. I don't know. At least the west coast gets A330 all the way |

I give it a few months, then it may go seasonal.
While desis may have taken to the LCC model on SE Asian routes which are relatively short, not sure if they're willing to be nickel and dimed on long haul routes to North America.
Besides, once you add everything up, those cheap airfares aren't that cheap anymore. |

got to agree with you. their Basic far does not even include checked in luggage, so point less. The next level up fare, which is like any other airlines, is same as any other full service carrier. So, can't really call a discount carrier. Though I must admit that I like their meal selection.

Additional charges for checked-in luggage? Looks like the Viking descendants aren't familiar with the travel habits of the average Indian. This will be one big dampener.

I agree to a point. I actually think DEL might work for them (because it is such a huge market). As some posters have pointed out (I think on another forum), some of the smaller US cites are hub captive with very high US-EU-India fares. This could work for them. Also WOW will probably like the DEL route in the winter - should help keep some seats filled to keep up min frequencies. Finally there are always people in India who make their decision literally to save $50 because it is Rs3,350 (their right, no judgement). So maybe....
Bigger question will WOW have proper spicy veg meals available for purchase on their India routes but also on the routes to the US. |

The Indian traveler will adjust. They adjusted to United's one free check in bag on flights to US (down from 2 on many other carriers) and many travel on AirAsia to Australia and Far East where there is no free bag allowance. They will travel on WoW especially in high seasons, but WoW may struggle in low season when fares are very low. |

Isn't United far from the first choice among US based Indians travelling to India? They are only popular with some of the big mileage holders.
Check-in baggage included in the ticket price is a big deal with many Indians travelling to the US, particularly the VFR and the student crowd which are both huge. You cannot compare the numbers with those of the far east or Australia.
There is a reason why EK with its sardine can 3-4-3 in Y is so popular. They allow upto 35 kilos checked luggage in Y.

Their service standards are also higher. As is QR's, EY's, AF's. They all have 3-4-3 in Y on a 777. CX is also moving to this config. |

You are right to a point. I think UA FF's in NJ tend to prefer UA (Gold on up plus big credit card spenders). There is a segment of the population that has gotten used to nonstops. They also have shifted. I think the Us-India market is now mature enough where there is room for a tonnage play like EK and a more premium priced nonstop. UA and EK both prove that. |

True to their reputation WoW is offering very low fares. On their website they are now offering low one way fares starting from Rs. 14000 (about $225 USD) from DEL to USA/Canada.
TK and Chinese airlines will have to take notice of this because they usually offer very low fares also. |

I went online and did a hypothetical R/T from BWI to DEL for $199 each way. I added a carry on for each leg, a window seat reservation in the cheap seats for each leg, and added a meal (a sandwich), a bottle of water, and a soft drink, for each leg, with the added assumption I'd bring some other sustenance for myself from home or buy it at the airport.
My grand total came to about US $625 R/T. That's not so bad. Of course, that's assuming that one gets the cheapest fare of $199 each way. Those aren't always available especially in December 2018 when they're as high as $399 each way. And which desi flies with just a carry on? Almost no one, especially to and from the US.
On the other hand, their Premium Y product seems quite a bargain. About $1500 will get you a nice wide chair, free meals and drinks, and a free check in for about the same prices as economy on the route. |
