I don't think 9W should add another North American destination from AMS - they should focus on the India-Europe sectors or the India-US non-stop sectors. HYD-AMS, perhaps COK-AMS, additional DEL/BOM-AMS frequencies etc. 9W should take full ownership of the India-Europe leg and let AF/KL/ DL take care of the transatlantic leg.
Flying to SFO/ LAX gets more complex due to the longer flight time. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

HYD-AMS won't work. Good loads but rubbish yields. KL couldn't make it work when the economy was a lot better. 9W shouldn't try it now. Same with COK-AMS.
Infact, they should just stick to DEL, BOM - AMS, and not try to connect AMS to every part of India. It may work with Abu Dhabi and the 738s, but widebodies to AMS is something else.
The India-US nonstops are a better idea. I really think they should try BOM-ATL or BOM-EWR _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

HYD-AMS: That KL flight was more than decade ago. Things have changed. It might work better now (may be at 4 times a week), especially with the lap top ban on ME3. And apart from BA, there is no other flight to Europe.
MAA-CDG did not work the first time and BLR-AMS was cancelled even before it was started, but 9W is now introducing the flights, even with European competition on BA and LH (for MAA) and BA, LH and AF (for BLR).
Oil prices are holding steady (and even dropping somewhat) so fuel cost will not be a factor.
COK-AMS: Don't think there is enough traffic. |

I don't think anything has changed really.
BA is making HYD work for two reasons - 1. The 787; 2. A fair O&D traffic between HYD and the UK.
KL/LH have to rely primarily on the connecting traffic from HYD to the US, which is still a high load, low yield market. LH doesn't seem interested even in re-starting HYD with its low cost subsidary.
And for all the laptop bans, the ME3 certainly aren't cutting frequencies. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

I disagree. 10 years is a long time. 15 years ago who would have thought you would see the traffic between HYD and US you see today. The good thing about US VFR is that it tends to be some of the most high educated people in the Indian Diaspora. As the early immigrants start to climb up the corporate ladder, they become more willing to spend some extra $$$ |

HYD has been a big supplier of traffic to the US right since the Y2K boom of the late 1990s when IT pros from AP flocked to the US in their thousands. So the HYD-US connection isn't new at all.
The numbers were there then, and they are still there now. But they didn't stop KL and LH from dovetailing out of HYD.
Any HYD-AMS experiment by 9W will end in disaster, and 9W probably knows it only too well. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).
