Mumbai airport becomes India’s first to introduce self bag-drop facility

December 15, 2016

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International airport in Mumbai became India’s first airport to introduce self bag drop units on Thursday. The Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) has installed several units in the country’s second most busiest airport to help passenger flow during rush hours.

The bag drop solution units, which will be available to the passengers of Air India, Jet Airways, SpiceJet, Go and Indigo, are being manufactured by SITA. ‘Scan&fly’, as its called, will allow passengers that have already checked in online to quickly tag and drop their baggage before heading directly to the gate.

Rajiv Jain, CEO of MIAL, said: “MIAL would like to maintain and grow its position as the most innovative airport in India, using technology to optimize the current airport infrastructure and manage the rapid growth of passengers. SITA’s Scan&Fly fits the bill perfectly, allowing the airport to use proven self-service technology to speed up the baggage process while providing passengers with more self-service options along their journey.”

The plug-and-play design of SITA Scan&Fly allows it to be easily installed onto existing airport check-in desks, maximising terminal space while leveraging the speed of self-service.

Maneesh Jaikrishna, SITA Vice President, India and Subcontinent, said, “Travelers globally have shown a strong preference to use technology to help them through their journey. Travelers in India are no exception. SITA continues to explore new ways in which we can provide passengers more convenience using self-service technologies, helping airports maximize their infrastructure while improving the overall passenger experience.”

Mumbai Airport introduces India’s first Self Bag-Drop

Indian airports are traditionally slower to embrace Information Technology led solutions and hence Hindustan Times report in April 2016 about Jet Airways & Air India planning to automate check-in at T2 at Mumbai Airport was a pleasant surprise. (Link: No More queues: Jet Airways, AI to automate check-in process)

Last week market leader SITA and Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) announced the introduction of self bag-drop which made Mumbai the first airport in the country to embrace this technology. The airport which inaugurated its new Terminal 2 (T2) in January 2014 saw Full service carriers Jet Airways and Air India move their domestic operations to the integrated terminal. Mumbai is the most congested airport in the country and second largest aviation market behind Delhi.

At an airport like Mumbai, where the passenger numbers keep increasing even when flights are not increasing, the space in the terminal will always be a challenge. Any airport operator prefers adding retail options which gives incremental revenue as compared to adding check-in counters.

MIAL has deployed SITA Scan&Fly units at T2 as well as T1 which is used by Low Cost Carriers for Domestic operations.

Nice analysis Sir. In your articles, I always look for the portion towards the end, where you put your interpretations, and speculations, to put things into perspective, rather than simply put a piece of news, and a bit of cursorial analysis, as others do. Thank you!
Cheers, Sumantra.

Excellent article, Ameya. Very good details on the way it functions.

I have an AI flight lined up from BOM in January. Looking forward to try this during that flight
