June 23 marks 30 years of this tragic day.
Sharing some pics from the personal collection of my father.
(Hopefully our resident stealin' SOBs; Bharghav Thantry, Yogesh Naik and perhaps another few, would have some respect for the dead, and their property ! )

The newspapers in Bombay, of the next couple of days; from 30 years ago.

I still remember the panic at home, when we heard an AI 747 had gone down. For the second time in about 8 years, my mother was besides herself trying to find out if it was my father's flight that was the unfortunate victim. After several calls to AI ops & movement control, she was told it was not. He was, however, in Perth.

The last time my old man flew Kanishka was in April of that year.

The Air India crew newsletter, published in July 1985 was dedicated to the crew. My father lost some good friends and co-workers that day. On this second to last flight to Toronto, Capt. Narendra visited my uncle in Ottawa, and spent a weekend with him at his place. Capt. Bhinder served in the Indian Air Force with my father, though in different transport squadrons.

Kanishka's delivery flight - on her stop over at LHR, Sept 1978.

I always found this cover to be a graphic representation of perhaps her very last moment.

My personal reminder of a great airplane.

Sad day for Indian aviation.

What makes it worse is that other than that one guy who pleaded guilty for manslaughter, none of the other perpetrators have been brought to book and will most likely not every be. The Canadians, for all their talk of efficiency and being "committed to justice", made a mockery of the trial by destroying evidence and generally scr***ing things up.

I remember the day after the crash of Emperor Kaniska at international terminal, JFK airport. The doom and glum of meeters and greeters clearly visible to me. Hopefully domestic politics will not spill overs to airline business again.

I remember that ghastly day, especially the evening, when a reporter of The Statesman came to our place. One of the people on board was a neighbour, one of my father's colleagues. Dr. Y. Nayudamma was a famous scientist on board the ill-fated plane (whom my father happened to know, as well). Our acquaintance had boarded the plane at JFK. The next few days in the locality were completely unnerving. His nephew had gone to Cork, subsequently. Very sad memories...

True indeed. The Killers were never punished, they roam scot free in B.C.
The present government recently prohibited women wearing hijab taking oath in citizenship ceremony but a person with turban is exempted from secondary screening at airports. They brought in a law for secondary screening for turban wearing people but had to drop that off quickly due to strong lobbying from influential groups!

I clearly remember that day. Captain R P Mathur and dad informed me about the tragedy that evening. They then drove down to Captain Bhinder's place to meet his wife and kids.

Captain Bhinder's son is now a Captain in 9W.

Flight Purser Sampath Lazar's son serves in AI as Flight Purser.

Very sad memories

Sampath Lazar's family was on the plane except one son.
I remember my father speaking then about Dr Nayudama being on board. He was a former head of CSIR.

Sad day for Indian aviation. I remember I was in high school when this incident happened and if memory serves right there were more bombs placed which blew up at Narita but luckily the plane was on ground.

I seem to recount a member of the cabin crew with the same last name, will it be possible to specify his full name? I would have never guessed this....I cannot remember which aircraft type, the Dream)liner, or the B777, or the B744 in the mid-2000s.
Thanks, Sumantra.

It's Sanjay Lazar. He was brought up Mr. Silvera who was also a Flight Purser in AI.

Himmat Sir, I still cannot place the name with the aircraft type he usually is on/used to be on, in the mid-2000s. I simply cannot remember where I have seen the name on the AI badge.
Thanks, Sumantra.

I'm pretty sure the wide body crew at AI (and Jet too, I think) can work on any of the wide body aircraft, so you could have met the person in question on any of those flights.

I guess this is the person in question

And by the looks of it, he got into a fair bit of trouble -

True Jeh, and on the ex-IC, there were cabin crew who worked on both the A32S and the A332s, when the latter were around, something I have seen till VT-IWA and VT-IWB were in service.

Hmm...the dates mentioned narrow down my hypotheses, as I can see from my flight log, but I'm still not sure, since I flew both B744s and A310s before the `merger', and B77Ls and B77Ws in that time period. 2004-2008/9.
Cheers, Sumantra.

This is a bit unrelated to the Kanishka tragedy, but perhaps important in the context of Air India employees viewing each other as one large family. A heart-warming article:

You'll be surprised, there are a lot of B Tech and BEs working as FAs in AI.

Thanks for the Online Memorial to the Crew and the Aircraft.

Very well-done and heartfelt.

I was at MIT back then, and remember waking up on Sunday morning to the news on the Indian radio channel in Boston. As an Indian, one can never forget the moment one first heard of the crash.

BEs and B Techs I can understand.

They are a dime a dozen in India nowadays, as there are more engineering colleges than barber shops in the country. How many can the industry absorb?

But lawyers?

I guess if he is the filmy type, the inflight announcement would be on the lines of 'Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome aboard Air India. Main Gita pe haath rakhkar kehta hoon ke is viman se nikalne ke liye aath dwaar hain Very Happy

Sorry to derail the serious thread with my nonsense, 747-237 Wink
