Air Canada to launch non-stop service to Delhi
New Dreamliner route drives international expansion from Toronto global hub

MONTREAL, Dec. 4, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - Air Canada today said that it will begin non-stop service from Toronto to Delhi beginning in November 2015. The new route, the first to be dedicated for Air Canada's Boeing 787-9 series aircraft, will open new opportunities in the Indian subcontinent, currently the largest international market not served by Air Canada.

"Air Canada's strategy to grow its Toronto Pearson hub and international presence is taking a major step forward with the addition of Delhi to our extensive global network. We will be offering the only non-stop flight from Canada to India using our newest Boeing 787 Dreamliners, which are revolutionizing long-haul air travel. The operating economics of these new aircraft make this service feasible and it will be the first route dedicated to the larger, 787-9 version of this aircraft, which begin entering our fleet in 2015," said Calin Rovinescu, President and Chief Executive Officer of Air Canada.

"This service will appeal both to customers visiting and doing business in Delhi, the capital region of India and the fourth most populous urban area in the world, and to those customers making onward connections within India and throughout Southeast Asia on our Star Alliance partner, Air India, or other interline partners," said Mr. Rovinescu.

"This government is committed to helping the Canadian air industry increase its access to international markets. Opening markets in India and continuing to facilitate travel for Canada's Indian Community, not only benefits our air sector and promotes increased trade, but travellers will now have more options to connect with friends and loved ones," said the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport.

"Canada and India are committed to strengthening economic and other ties and in a globalized world non-stop air linkages are vital to achieving such goals. Air Canada's new service will facilitate business relationships and promote increased trade by connecting both countries' largest urban centres. Given our country's vibrant and thriving Indo-Canadian community, the route will also make it easier for families and friends to visit one another and remain connected," said Nadir Patel, Canada's new high commissioner in the Republic of India.

Tickets go on sale Dec. 9, 2014 and the service will operate four-times-weekly beginning Nov. 1, 2015 using a Boeing 787 Dreamliner featuring Air Canada's award-winning, three-cabin service, including the next generation lie-flat seat in International Business Class, a Premium Economy cabin, and enhanced seatback In-Flight Entertainment system available at every seat throughout the aircraft. Flights provide for Aeroplan accumulation and redemption and, for eligible customers, priority check-in, Maple Leaf Lounge access in Toronto, priority boarding and other benefits.

Flights are timed for convenient connections both within Air Canada's North American network and in India on Air India or other interline partners to such cities as Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, and to other destinations throughout Southeast Asia. Including Delhi, Air Canada serves or has announced service to a total of 65 international destinations on five continents from its Toronto global hub.

Very good news. The US carriers should learn from Air Canada.

Interesting to see how 9W's one hop service will compete.

Nice. And expectedly excellent timings too.

Also, good on them for planning and announcing so far in advance.

Sadly, our home grown carriers routinely fail on both metrics.

(By the way, I think this just makes it that much more difficult for the scavengers to expect the Canadian authorities to yield to their demand for more traffic rights.)

YYZ is the obvious choice for AC, but would be interesting if they try YVR at some point. They could capture a lot of west coast USA to India traffic.

If only Canada made it easier to transit through their airports...we need a visa right now to transit...

MY blog update on the topic.
Please click the link for the tables, couldnt get it right here
Air Canada returns to New Delhi effective November’15l

In an unexpected announcement, Air Canada (IATA code AC) announced resumption of services to New Delhi (IATA code: DEL) beginning November’15. (Winter Schedule-2015). The flights will be operated by B787 Dreamliner aircraft, and the press release claims this will be the first route with the longer range B787-9, which will operate on two of three weekly services proposed by the airline.

The airline will operate this non-stop service four times a week,
Code:

Flight
From
To
Depart
Arrive
Days of the week
AC050
Toronto
Delhi
20:55
21:15 (+ 1 day)
Monday*, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday
AC051
Delhi
Toronto
00:45
05:00
Tuesday, Wednesday*,Thursday, Sunday

Departure from Toronto on Monday & from Delhi on Wednesday will be operated by B787-800.

Historic and current links to Canada
While Air India operated Amritsar – Delhi – Toronto flight, the same was pulled out owning to heavy losses in May’12. Air Canada also,in the past operated flights on the Toronto – Delhi sector. Both the airlines had flown this route with the B777 variants and Air Canada will benefit from the favorable economics of the B787 over the B777.

Currently only Jet Airways operates a flight to Toronto, via its hub at Brussels from Delhi, with connections from Mumbai. With talks of Jet Airways shifting its hub from Brussels to Amsterdam or to Abu Dhabi, the future of flights to Toronto would be in question.

B787 – Dreamliner
The aircraft has its share of problems across the globe, including with Indian national carrier Air India. While Air India has two class configurations, Air Canada has configured its Dreamliner’s (B787-800 variant) in three class configurations with 20 Business, 21 Premium Economy and 210 Economy class seats. The Star Alliance member is yet to reveal the configurations of its longer B787-900 variant.

While the B787-900 will have wingspan and fuselage same as those of the -800 variant, it is expected to be longer by 6 meters and higher Maximum Take Off Weight (MTOW), with a range of 15372km, compared to 14500km of the smaller B787-800 variant.

Delhi Hub & Connectivity
Not long ago, Star Alliance had made intentions clear about having a hub at Delhi along with Mumbai. Clearly the entry of Air India in Star Alliance is helping Delhi develop itself as a hub, along with attracting global traffic.

As per existing schedules of Air India, the inbound flight would connect to multiple destinations
Code:

Inbound
Connection Time
Destination
1 - 3 hours
Mumbai(AI), HongKong(AI), Bangkok(TG)
3 - 6 hours

6 - 9 hours
Ahmedabad(AI), Lucknow(AI), Pune(AI)
9+ hours
Khatmandu(AI), Hyderabad(AI), Chennai(AI), Kolkata(AI), Kochi(AI)

Outbound
Connection Time
Destination
1 - 3 hours
Chennai(AI), Mumbai(AI), Ahmedabad(AI), Kochi(AI), Kolkata(AI), Bangkok(TG)
3 - 6 hours
Singapore(SQ), Pune(AI), Hongkong(AI), Lucknow(AI)
6 - 9 hours

9+ hours

Re-timings would help Air Canada connect both ways to Singapore on Singapore Airlines, while it would already connect to Bangkok on Thai Airways – both Star Alliance members.

Concerns
While this new link is a welcome move, the traffic between Canada & India has remained stagnant for a while. The traffic patterns are mainly seasonal and there are ample options available via Europe, Middle East & the USA.

Resistance of Canadian government to grant more rights to Middle Eastern carriers and requirement of US visa for transit would benefit this non-stop service of Air Canada.

They have started the process to remove the need for transit visas - expected to materialize in a year or two. I'd love it - as often LH+AC+AC combinations is the cheapest on India-USA routings! And AC is definitely much better than flying UA.

If I remember correctly, AC used A345 or A346 (not sure about B777 variants). I am sure I sat in one of those while doing YYZ-DEL-YYZ in 2005/6

They started with a A345, then went a A343 and then went to a B767 via ZRH. Nothing clicked for them unfortunately!
