The official notification from the state government on renaming 12 cities is expected be issued on or before November 1, Kannada Rajyotsava day .

The Centre on Friday gave nod to the state to its proposal to rename 12 cities in Karnataka including Bangalore, Belgaum and Mysore. The subject is likely to come before the state cabinet and then notification be issued.

By issuing notification on or before Kannada Rajyotsava, the Congress government wants to send a strong message, particularly in to regard to Belguam border row, that there would no compromise on land and water.

Basavaraj, principal secretary, revenue department told STOI that a matter has be placed before the cabinet. "However, even the chief minister can execute the order and later cabinet can ratify the official notification on the renaming the cities," he said.

A senior officer in the CM's office maintained that Siddaramaiah has taken the Centre's allowing the state to rename 12 cities as a victory as he and revenue department had silently pursued the matter with Union ministry of home affairs (MHA) for last one month.

"Siddaramaiah when he became MLA for the first time in 1983 was appointed as chairperson of Kannada Kavalu Samithi (Kannada Watchdog Committee). So, he has special interest in the subject. When ever border row cropped up, he sought information from the officials on the status on Centre's approval on the proposal of renaming the cities. He took the matter seriously and went ahead with announcement of renaming Belagum as Belagavi on Novermber 1, last week," he said.

Siddaramaiah made the announcement following demands by representatives of Kannada organizations and litterateurs at a meeting convened in Bangalore on October 10 to discuss the stand to be taken on the petition filed by Maharashtra in the Supreme Court seeking the inclusion of 814 villages in Belgaum.

The official in CM's office also said that after CM's announcement, revenue department went over board by staying in touch with MHA on daily basis to give nod to the state's proposal. "A day before Centre gave permission, the CM personally spoke to Union home minister Rajnath Singh to give nod at the earliest."

When asked about the cost that would be required to rename the cities, Basavaraj said that not much of money would be needed as every department at their level would change names once the notification is issued.

The interesting part is that after Bengaluru, I have seen Belagavi being used on official documentation. As for the other cities, it was always that way multi-lingually, with both the anglicised/older name continuing with the above-mentioned names. There have been other hybrid names as well, as I remember from the furore that came up in the Bangalore-Bengaluru matter in the early 2000s: bAngloor, bAngloor(u) being also used by the local population, the latter with the subtle u not being that common. While some names such as Thiruvananthapiuram, Mumbai and Chennai sound nice to me, and more pleasant on the tongue, I wonder why we have to go through the huge financial drain of the official renaming. People will always continue to use the older names, and it may always be a particular term, depending on the language a person is speaking in.
Cheers, Sumantra.

After Bombay was changed to Mumbai, and Madras to Chennai and Calcutta to Kolkata - I guess the trend has well and truly taken off now. What's good for the goose is good for the gander Smile

Well end of the day, its what rolls of the tongue easily that sticks. Apart from govt. departments, normal people would end up using the easier of the two options. I still say Trivandrum over Thiruvananthapuram (infact the TRV airport calls itself the Trivandrum International Airport and is written so in English, while Hindi says "Trivendram" and Malayalam "Thiruvananthapuram"). Having had to undergo the ordeal of stuffing 18 characters into application forms where the column for city usually has 10-12 char space, I prefer Trivandrum over its Mallu equivalent. My passport still says place of issue as "Trivandrum"!! Wink

Having said that Chennai rolls off the tongue much easier than Madras and probably why it has caught on with non-Tamilians. From my experience people (non-localites) still prefer Bombay/Calcutta or Cal over Mumbai and Kolkatta respectively.

Kerala went through this conversion process in the 80s and luckily nobody was militant about it. But knowing Bangalore and madcaps like Vattal Nagaraj of Kannada Cheluvali, there is going to be a lot of enforcement.

Only the names of the places are changing.

The bad roads, power cuts, water shortage and other problems are not going away anywhere.

When are India's so called 'leaders' going to develop a proper sense of priorities?

There should be an IQ test and an MQ ( Moral Quotient ) test before people are elected/nominated to posts of chief ministers, governors, president, prime minister etc. People who don't pass BOTH the tests should not be voted / placed in positions of power. In these modern times how can we spend so much money and time in utterly useless activities?

I need to clarify my post. By moral quotient I do not mean that a person has to be super religious or pious or anything of that sort. I am merely saying that people in power should take a commitment to not squander public money in useless activities when there are other more high priority items badly in need of funds.

Aside from the 9W website, I haven't seen Bengaluru in widespread use anywhere.
