|
|
Hi all,
I'am planning a holiday trip for myself to either HKG (preferably), SIN or KUL next month for 7 days.
So far, I have tried all the major tour operators like SOTC, Thomas Cook and Cox and Kings. They have all mentioned that the price will be cheaper on twin sharing basis only.
I also looked for the air fares (both ways) on Make my trip, Yatra and others. I have found out that the airfares are relatively cheaper. That is approax 24K to 27K.
Now my budget is less than 40K. But the problem is that the hotel stay for 7 days is on the higher side. And also there is this issue of applying for visa which will be more expensive.
So I'am confused as to whether to take the package tour for lesser days or travel alone.
Please can someone help me in providing info on any less expensive place to stay either in HKG,SIN or KUL. Coz all the 2 stars and 3 star hotels, that I have checked are also expensive. _________________ www.flickr.com/G-BYGB photos |

If u dont mind staying at backpacker's hostels then thats the cheapest way to stay...My cousin traveled to Combodia, vietnam,Hkg,Sin,Bkk and KUL last year and in all the places stayed in those backpacker hostels which he said were quite clean and comfortable (quite cheap too)..For flights check out the airasia website you may get dirt cheap fares. |

Sreenivas, HKG has visa on arrival for Indians. While the airport is a spotters' paradise, there isn't as much to see in HKG as there is in SIN, for instance.
Cheers, Sumantra. |

Actually there is quite a few things to do in Hong Kong and when I visited I found that even 5 days that I spent was less. Few things that you can do:
1) Disneyland (If you have kids this is quite a good place to take them. It will take one whole day)
2) Giant Buddha on Lantau Island (half day tour) along with vegetarian lunch at the monestary as well. To reach hear take the 40 minute cable car ride called the Ngong Ping 360 which has an amazing view via the mountains
3) The peak. From where you can see the Hong Kong skyline best to go around dusk time as you can see the city lights as well. Make sure you go up using the Peak Tram which literally goes up at 90 degrees angle.
4) At the Peak itself you have MAdame Tussauds wax museum
5) Ocean Park
6) Aveneue of Stars (best viewed during dusk)
6) One night side trip to Macau
7) And lots of shopping as Hong Kong has a huge variety as well as plenty of factory outlets to get your designer lables at a cheap price. The Tung Chung Citygate factory outlet near the airport can be a good option for last minute shopping.
Hotels in Hong Kong are perenially expensive you may want to try and stay away from the city to get cheap deals. Try this website as they ddo have some good deals

Try checking the airfare on Singapore Airlines that way if you can get a stopover on your way back you can explore Singapore as well.
Happy Holidays |

Price wise - nothing beats Malaysia or Thailand - both SIN and HKG are more expensive.
December is a peak season everywhere - so don't expect any discounts or deals. The same places/ flights will be more reasonable after mid-Jan (though again - Chinese New Year is another peak travel period - you can check it's timing for 2012).
Don't go for a package tour - you're young and intelligent, and you'll find your way around. The learning/ discovery/ mistakes process is half the fun
If you plan Malaysia, you can travel the length and breadth of the country by buses/ trains on the cheap. The countryside is in many ways more charming than the cities! I'm not sure about Thailand being the same, I've just done the BKK/ Pattaya circuit there, not been to the hinterland.
Go with an open mind, prepare to rough it out, expect to suffer if you're a vegetarian. and have a blast overall!
My tips on planning such a trip:
1. Look for flights to/from India and the visa thing and the price of that bundle. Let that be the main deciding factor.
2. Once you know which country you're landing in, look for what you'd like to do - stay in a single city, move across different cities etc.
3. If you're traveling alone and on a budget, just look for a youth hostel type of place, and book that. Don't bother with star hotels if you think you can manage in a youth hostel instead.
4. Look for cheap bus/ train type options for inter-city travel. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

@Nimish,Sumantra and Sri_Bom,
Thank you guys so much for sharing your experience and wonderful tips on travel planning.
I have finally decided to book my ticket to KUL for 5 days as I have found it to be comparitively less than SIN and HKG.
Looking forward to cover all the important locations there and post wonderful pics on this forum.
Since I love airline spotting too much, I find it easier to travel alone than in a package tour. Coz I can make my own time to go to the airport and click as many shots at will. _________________ www.flickr.com/G-BYGB photos |

Hi thr,
Since you have already decided to go to KUL. Try finding a place to stay in Bukit Bintang or Jalan Alor area. This is where the touristy/shopping bit is.
Jalan Alor is known for its cheap/tasty street food ie: Tom Yum soup is divine.
Nova Hotel on Jalan Alor is a reasonable place to stay. I know someone who stayed there and they suggested it was good value for money.
If you plan to visit Genting Highlands then take a bus upto the cable car station from the main bus terminus in KL the bus is really really cheap. Finding your ways in Malaysia is pretty easy as a lot of people speak English/Tamil.
Hope you have a great time. Good Luck! _________________ Aerosexual...! |
