Hi all,

I have noticed that the amount of spammers has increased dramatically over the past month. Many seem to be from the same organization, because though the content is different the format is similar among all of them. What new measures should we introduce in order to clamp down on this? It really is annoying to find a random thread among aviation related ones.

We've noticed it too, but given the free/ open nature of this forum, we're not likely to add in a manual verification step before a new member is let on. All members need to have verifiable email addresses, which it seems like these spammers do. The best option right now is to drop a PM/ email to the mods asking for a thread to be deleted immediately - we are pretty prompt with that.

I think it is time for this step now.

Couple of things! First of all it is too much work to manually activate each member in timely manner. Secondly and more importantly, we have no means to x-check/validate besides our gut sense and they all seem to have valid looking email addresses. Imagine if they're able to validate the email address, then there is little more we can do manually to filter them out.

Would it be possible to restrict a "new user" from creating a new thread for 'n days' and in the meanwhile, the current members can monitor the replies being posted onto the current threads. Incase the need be, the reply can be flagged to the Mods upon notice.

Good idea, but we are not set up for that. It seems for the moment the simplest thing to do is to bring it to our attention. The provider gives us option to block usernames, email address (whole or in part with wild card character) and even IP address. So, if you guys can just let us know we can take of the rest.

God knows, Aseem, you have wielded that powerful weapon of shutting down an IP address (like mine) when I misbehave.

Like Austin Powers, you say "Oh Texdravid, BE-HAVE". Laughing

For last two days, there are some wierd new members from abroad who are posting irrelevant topics on this aviation forum.

Even today there is a Russian user who has started a thread in aviation forum in his native language.

folks! we are actively blocking IP addresses. Just a request to all members that it is very difficult for us to scan every post, so if you could post the username and the IP address of the spammer, it will help us filter those out.

thnx

Target, i believe, is the aggregate of all member posts.

Just noticed this :

The memberlist shows a new "member":
abrarly
Ireland Republic
28 Mar 2011
with 16777214 posts !!!!!!!

Suggest mods look into this

I am a bit confused about the member's username??

Also now all new activation would be done by the moderation team, and before we do that the new members will have to introduce themselves.... just note the new section on the top of the forum for sign-in guidelines

There is a button right on the post besides "quote" that gives the IP address. Not sure if regular members can see it, but if you can just direct us to that spam post we will do the rest.

thnx

No, that is visible only to mods and admins. Regular members cannot have any means to provide us the IP of individual posts and posters.

So, if they can provide us with the username, we will hunt down for IP address.
