The Government will announce the much awaited 3G spectrum policy by this month end, a move which will pave way for mobile operators offering voice, video and data services to subscribers, says a UNI report.
Department of Telecom’s decision to announce the policy by this month-end emanates from the success of getting over 40 mhz spectrum vacated from the Defence for mobile services.
The Government is talking to the Defence to vacate 45 mhz of spectrum for our use and they have agreed to release over 40 mhz by July. The work of shifting defence to an alternative spectrum band is on progress and hopefully by July most of it will be over.
Last year DoT and Defence had agreed upon a mechanism as per which Defence would release 45 mhz of spectrum for mobile services while department of telecom (through BSNL and MTNL) will construct an alternate path so that the armed forces can move to another spectrum band.
Out of the released 40 mhz of spectrum half of it that is 20 mhz would be for 2G (normal voice services) services and other 20 mhz would be for 3G services, he added.
3G services allows subscribers to experience hi speed internet, and other real time services on their mobile phones.
For mobile operators this would be a good opportunity to boost their revenue. |
