Plaza Premium Lounge to open in Bangalore
Plaza Premium Lounge will soon be opening two pay-in lounges and a day hotel at Bengaluru International Airport in Bangalore, India.

Don't know if this has been posted before. It looks very impressive! Pay-in lounges are a great idea! _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

From: http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/economy/infrastructure/bangalore-is-the-hottest-investment-destination-for-business/articleshow/24533064.cms
Quote: | Bangalore is the hottest investment destination for business
Bangalore has emerged as the hottest business destination in the country leaving behind bigger cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai, says a recent survey by Global Initiative for Restructuring Environment and Management (GIREM) and DTZ, the global leader in property services.
The report, which surveyed 21 business destinations across country, says good connectivity, high quality of talent pool, good availability of office space suiting different income groups, a high-quality education system and a welcoming, multifarious city culture has helped Bangalore notch the top slot. Bangalore ranks 1st with a total score of 129.56 out of 160 followed by Chennai at 127.84 and Mumbai at 123.64
"Bangalore has one of the highest footfalls of business travelers in the country, driven by the booming IT/ITes sector. It also has one of the most resilient real estate markets which offer commercial space at much more competitive rates compared to cities like Delhi, Mumbai or Gurgaon," says Shyam Sundar S Pani, President - GIREM.
According to the report, while popular destinations such as Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, and Pune continued to occupy top positions, the ranking revealed some unexpected contenders in the Top 10 league including Indore, Bhubaneshwar, Kochi, Coimbatore and Nagpur.
"Rapid and unplanned urbanization in the country over the past few decades has led to unprecedented job demand. Job creation is a crucial answer to this challenge which calls for the pressing need to develop new industrial townships and business districts to ease the pressure from the already saturated business destinations," says Anshul Jain, Chief Executive, DTZ.
Bangalore commercial space absorption that witnessed 105 million sft absorbed till date as compared to other top Indian cities led mainly by growth in leasing from IT/ITes firm, also helped fuelling growth in the residential real estate market |
This took me by surprise - given the reality of horrible crumbling infrastructure in BLR - no roads, no water, no power etc. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

I don't know what the original date was, but there's still work going on across the terminal, the new "façade" is not ready yet (at least wasn't 2 weeks ago when I left BLR). _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Somewhat surprised. I found Mumbai roads better than Bangalore, I know some of it was due to the metro construction. And water is only available about 3 to 4 times a week for a few hours, in many localities in Bangalore. |

New Terminal Extension to open December 14th.
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bangalore/Bangalore-Airport-to-be-renamed-Kempegowda-International-Airport-on-Dec-14/articleshow/26321958.cms
Quote: | Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), the promoters of Bengaluru International Airport, said they would change the name of the airport to Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru, with the opening of the new Terminal 1A on December 14.
The new terminal will be inaugurated by chief minister Siddaramaiah and Union civil aviation minister Ajith Singh. "The new name honours Kempegowda, the founding father of Bangalore, and the renaming is being timed with the opening of the T1A where the facilities, interiors and exteriors mirror the rich culture of Karnataka and the vibrant colours of the Garden City," said G V Sanjay Reddy, MD, BIAL.
The expanded terminal, which spans over 150,500 sq meters, will more than double the floor space area of the current terminal. In addition, the new terminal will have a Code F aerobridge to accommodate an Airbus A380 aircraft. T1A will increase the number of check-in counters from 53 to 86, immigration counters from 18 to 24, and baggage reclaim belts from nine to 13.
Soon after the announcement of the T1A expansion, BIAL had launched the Smile Bengaluru campaign, inviting citizens to share their views on what they would like to see in the new terminal. "This is India's first airport built in collaboration with the citizens of Bangalore and the traveller community at large making it a truly inclusive airport," said BIAL. |
The opening is to coincide with the renaming of the airport.

The gate numbers at BIA have been changed.
Some of them now have a letter suffixed.
For e.g. there are gates 7, 7A, 7B,7C. |

Quote: | Kempe Gowda International Airport - now official
Bangalore International Airport (BIA) will be renamed after the city's founder, Kempegowda, on Saturday. Addressing media persons here on Friday, IT, BT and Infrastructure Minister S.R. Patil said that besides naming the airport after Kempegowda, a new terminal that has the capacity to handle two crore passengers a year will also be dedicated inaugurated on Saturday.
CM Siddaramaiah will unveil the new name of the airport and civil aviation minister Ajit Singh will inaugurate the new terminal T1A. The State and Central governments both wanted the airport to be named after Kempe Gowda, with resolutions to this effect being passed in the State Assembly and by the Union Cabinet.
"The existing terminal’s annual capacity to handle passengers is about 1.2 crore. With the expanded terminal T1A, we can handle 20 million passengers annually," said Patil.
There is stiff competition between Chennai and Bangalore for being named the third largest airport in the country after Delhi and Mumbai, and the enlarged terminal will put Bangalore ahead, said Patil.
BIAL has provided direct employment to 7500 people. The airport has a turnover of Rs 560 crore, and made a profit of Rs 114 crore. BIA started operations in 2008, and has handled 6.4 crore passengers to date. |
Good to see the expansion reach it's conclusion - though it really sucks that the approach road to the airport is still a disaster zone - over 5 years after the airport started! _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

I agree. I flew in and out of there yesterday and was disappointed to find the new section still under construction. On the upside, the removal of the barricades outside make the whole place look a lot brighter and open - I like the way it looks now.
The interiors kinda look like the lovechild of KLIA and Changi |

Inaugurations often have nothing to do with operations, as it's a "Ceremonial/ feel good" type of thing - and really involves the availability of the VIPs/ stars being aligned etc. There'll probably be another small celebration when the terminal actually opens. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Took my first flight out of the renovated section - few comments
Indigo check in has moved to the new section, rest continue in their respective positions
There was a BIAL employee asking Domestic passengers to go left and international to turn right. But except for 6E, everyone else on the right side. When I asked the person, he said the CISF staff asked them to say so.
Security is a slight mess. They have brought the security desks slightly forward thus reducing the queuing space. Plus the position of pillars in the middle make it feel cramped
The old security check is closed for renovation
One new food outlet and coupla new retail outlets added
Plaza Premium Lounge opened in the upper level.
The new gates are slightly different from the older one. The agent position is in front of the gate rather than by the side as in the previous gates. This way passengers can go to the gate from either side of the agent desk.
Arrival at Gate 1 and 2 will mean a longish walk to the escalators due to the bus gates at the departure bus gates below.

Just got a chance to see the new terminal first hand. Really good improvement over what we had! Now KIAL starts looking like an airport
Also the new expressway from the city to the Airport makes for a really smooth drive and awesome views of the Jakkur airfield. A small aircraft landed from just a few tens of feet above the elevated road onto the runway at Jakkur when one of my friends were driving by. |

From: http://www.livemint.com/Companies/fmYgknIMI2Bk2b2SEhrd8H/Bangalore-airport-allowed-to-raise-levies-by-up-to-31.html
Quote: | Bangalore airport allowed to raise levies by up to 31%
Domestic passengers will pay Rs.342 in user development fee while international passengers will pay as much as Rs.1,368
The Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (Aera) has allowed Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) to increase levies by at least 31% on domestic fliers as also international fliers besides hiking the fees on all airlines for using the airport.
Domestic passengers will pay Rs.342, up from Rs.260, in user development fee to the airport while international passengers will pay as much as Rs.1,368, up from Rs.1,070, from 1 July.
The increases have been allowed at a time when the air traffic growth has slowed to just 4% in 2013 on the back of higher airfares.
Aera has also allowed a significant increase in landing and parking charges for airlines in its order issued on 10 June and posted this on its website. This is likely to increase the cost burden on all airlines. The exact increase per flight was not immediately clear.
BIAL could not be reached immediately for comment.
Aera also allowed GVK Power and Infrastructure Ltd-run Bangalore Airport to charge Rs.1,226 per international and Rs.306 per domestic passenger in the next fiscal year. “The rates determined herein are ceiling rates, exclusive of taxes, if any,” Aera said. |
Bad to see the increments, but at least it's far lesser than what was demanded. How do AK's charges of Rs. 500/passenger work out with the UDF alone being Rs. 306/pax! _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

From: http://www.newindianexpress.com/business/news/BIAL-in-Talks-with-Karnataka-Govt-to-Cut-ST-on-Jet-Fuel/2014/07/09/article2320979.ece
Quote: | BIAL in Talks with Karnataka Govt to Cut ST on Jet Fuel
Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) is in talks with the government of Karnataka to bring down sales tax on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) to encourage more airlines to set up base in Bangalore and promote tourism in the state.
This is part of BIAL’s home carrier advantage plan wherein airlines stand to benefit with concessions from the airport operators provided the airline can achieve a throughput of at least 1 million additional and have the highest number of night parked aircraft in KIAL among other conditions. But high sales taxes in Karnataka has been the deterrent for many carriers so far. At present, sales taxes in Karnataka is amongst the highest in the country at 28%.
Private carriers are also weary to set up base in Bangalore due to the high User Development Fee (UDF) of BIAL. Incidentally UDF was increased at the airport last week from Rs 301.40 (domestic) and Rs 1022.30 (international) to Rs 342 (Domestic) and Rs 1368 (international), representing an increase of 13.37% and 33.82% respectively.
In a recent interview with Express, CEO of low cost carrier AirAsia, Mitoo Chandilya said that the incentive was good but the targets have been hit by an airline. His boss and AirAsia Group Chairman, Tony Fernandes had remarked that ‘airport taxes in India were as much as their airfares’.
BIAL which operates the Kempegowda International Airport in the city said that they are in talks with the state government to promote the city as a hub for aviation activity.
“We will be able to attract an airline to make Bangalore their base only if the tax levied on ATF is reduced,” Hari Marar, President of Airport operations told reporters here.
ATF is one of the highests in India when compared to other regional hubs like Singapore and Malaysia. ATF accounts for nearly 40% of the operations costs of an airline. Marar reasons that the reducing of ATF to 4% would have a 11% impact on airline’s cost structure. |
Reducing the charges on ATF is something that's been on the table for a long time. However will the govt. bite the bullet and give up immediate revenues on the hope of longer term gains? _________________ We miss you Nalini! |
