Flaming space junk from a Russian satellite narrowly missed hitting a Chilean airliner over the Pacific Ocean, according to BBC TV.
The pilot of a LAN Chile Airbus A340 en route to New Zealand told air traffic controllers that he had seen pieces of flaming space junk falling about eight kilometres (four miles) in front of the plane and behind it, TV3 said. The aircraft was not struck by any of the debris and later landed safely in Auckland.
Airways New Zealand, which manages New Zealand’s air traffic, said it had been warned by Russian authorities that an obsolete satellite was due to fall into the Pacific Ocean today. But the debris had apparently fallen into the area 12 hours earlier than the time advised by the Russians. A spokesman for the Civil Aviation Authority, which is responsible for air safety, said it would launch an inquiry after it was advised of the details of the incident.
Pictures are expected to be available as the pilot says he took pictures, says BBC.

Jetliner came close to being hit by flaming space object over South Pacific

Quote:
Chilean jetliner approaching New Zealand came within 20 seconds of being hit by blazing objects hurtling down to Earth, New Zealand aviation officials said.

U.S. space officials said it was most likely a close encounter with a disintegrating meteor, denying assertions from New Zealand officials that the LAN Chile plane narrowly missed being blasted by Russian space debris that was returning to Earth ahead of schedule.

Pilot says the debris noise was audible/loud and over the engine noise of the A340.

He also radioed an Aerolineas Argentina aircraft flying from Auckland to Argentina about the debris, but that pilot elected to continue with his flight.

Yesterday I saw the news on TV, and they said that this flamming object was not a meteor but a russian satellite (NASA and russians denied this) + that meteors were not expected for that zone in this period, so it`s very unlikely.
They also said that this object made a very loud noise and that passengers could hear it.[/url]
