Earlier before the Tiger trouble began, you could in a way travel by train from India to Sri Lanka. My parents used to do that long ago, before air links were so common, as we have family there. They used to take a train to Dhanushkodi terminal, transfer to a ferry, disembark at Talaimannar and then entrain to Colombo. There was a move to build a road and rail link some time back but it was shot down by TN politicians.
