MUMBAI: The Kingfisher airline on Wednesday complained to the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the city crime branch of an online ticket booking fraud through credit cards and stated that they were duped to the tune of Rs 17 crores. The EOW suspect a nationwide racket using this modus operandi.
This is the first time that an airline has itself given a complaint. In most cases the bank whose credit cards are used, lodge a compliant.
.....
"The transactions in this case took place between July 2005 and November 2006," said a police officer. EOW sources said that the online tickets to this airline were booked from various part of the country including Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, New Delhi etc. The police have also asked the complainant to produced the exact amount of fraud in the jurisdiction of Mumbai. |

There was a thread about this on our older forum.
BTW, all airlines need to be careful against such frauds in the future.

In the most sensational case of online ticket booking fraud, Kingfisher Airlines has allegedly been duped of Rs 17 crore.
Although the airlines has filed a complaint with the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai crime branch, a formal FIR is yet to be registered.
Police sources say credit card details procured from restaurants, petrol pumps and shopping mall employees were used to book tickets online.
The Mumbai Police has asked officials of Kingfisher Airlines to submit the exact details of the credit cards that were used to book airline tickets.
Sources say middlemen would buy tickets online using details of credit cards such as the card number and CVV number given behind the card. The tickets were then sold for a discount.

I faintly remember some nigerians getting caught in some online fraud in regards to ticketing at KF. And after that they had stopped the facility of using credit cards on the site which were not issued in india. _________________ Expeditors- You'd be surprised how far we will go for you www.expeditors.com |

Hi Guys!
Greeting from 9victor!
This topic is rather getting interesting. Well with the surge of on-line before, we are goning to face similar problems sooner or later.
Who knows there maybe similar dupes by other LCCs but they didn't surface to save their face value! _________________ *A380 European Pride* |

Hi 9V - welcome to AI.net!! And wish you a very happy new year!
I was discussing this very same topic with colleagues at work today, and then remembered that Indian Railways (IRCTC.co.in) has a more secure system, where I needed to enter a 8 digit Visa or Master card password before I could use my HSBC card on their website!
This password was something that I had set up with HSBC about a year ago, and was quite surprised when IRCTC's payment gateway redirected me to HSBC's "Verified by Visa" page and asked me for that password (in addition to the standard details like expiry/CVV etc.).
Maybe it's time for the domestic airlines to also adopt this 2nd layer of checks for online bookings?
On another note, I'd just booked tickets on GoAir through my card, and I got a call from GoAir 2 days before my journey start asking me to verify my credit card details. This would have been a good time to identify a fraud transaction, and then put a hold or a "high security alert" on the booking, so the person would not be able to check-in without verifying his identity and proving the card was his. |

Chief, I wouldn't pass credit card details on the phone like this. And if I did, I would mark a informative to the credit card issuing bank informing them that I had done so. I would also go as far as asking the person calling to provide a number on which to call back.
I had a similar issue with BA a few months ago, and they uncovered some bigtime fraud because of that. |

Good points - I should have thought of that during the call. However thinking back now, I might have just been asked for the last 4 digits or something (though I think they asked for the full cc number). I think this is something I need to keep in mind when I get called again. |
