India is seeing an era where "customer" service in the form of pretty smiles and "may I help yous" seems to be more important than "knowing your stuff". This is a phenomenon observed in the Indian private Banking sector too.
Maybe it is important that people know their stuff FIRST and then offer a cute smile. Personally I'd prefer the mechanical-but methodical Lufthansa-type airline personnel over the "smiling, friendly" and confused lo Rolling Eyes t.

An added bonus- the stern look deters the average desi from misbehaving! Smile

desis are confused like never before, as uptill now in India the looks never mattered. Now, with new influences coming, those who are more confused that the rest might consider that put-on smile as an excuse for avoiding work. Frankly, I am a bit confused myself and don't know what to suggest Rolling Eyes

Quite by coincidence, I have posted a blog post on the same topic -- albeit in the restaurant industry: http://randomgraphs.blogspot.com/2007/03/processes-argh.html

I think it is a growing phenomenon all over. In the quest for being "professional" we just copy the form (and not the content) from abroad. Using common sense and knowing your stuff are sacrificed in the process.

A big whistle for that, ssbmat.

Bl**** irksome especially when one is on roaming and the precious call gets wasted further. It's endless --- "May I help you, sir. Is there anything you would like to know Sir? I dont know, Sir. I'll have to speak to my supervisor. I'll be putting you on hold, Sir. Thank you for bieng on the line, Sir. You have been speaking to... We will be sending you an SMS after this call sir. For you to evaluate us, Sir," in an accent that quickly falls to pieces.
Seems to be an era of doughtnut heads, as the advice is disaster.
Just try calling back the customer care number, speak to a different agent each time and watch the fun. Same problem gets different solutions.
Good example is Hutch --- happened recently on roaming and was set back by Rs.190.

Air Deccan agent was like this too. When asked to confirm aircraft type on the sector, got a very affirmative "ATR Airbus 320". Repeated again very confidently.

GoI services seem so practical. And have the stern look and advice thats so much better. Example will be a State Bank of India Uncle versus a Sania Mirza clone in the same post in the pvt sector. Experience/knowledge counts anyday.

GOI services are no better!! As Karan experienced last year - when an AI staffer at the BOM check-in counter told him that his flight to AMD was to be operated by a "Normal 747 without the upper deck" Laughing

May I know which was this sector? Air Deccan operates A320 as well ATR 42-320, so it could be an excusable error.

Plus - let us face the fact - knowing the aircraft type is not a matter of life or death nor the most critcial factor influencing your decision to fly (with may be exceptions of some A Netters and a few others).
