Indeed, the Pawan Hans flights to Shillong are in the Dauphins which typically carry 10 persons.
However, the Meghalaya government seems to have some tie-up with the IAF to carry freight from Guwahati to various parts of the state. I had seen one of these copters (probably Mi-8 ) in the civil enclave at Guwahati.
Back to the passenger services. One of the Dauphins crashed near Barapani in bad weather in Sep 2004. All 10 persons aboard were killed, including two state ministers and perhaps some MLAs as well. This gives an idea of the traffic pattern on this flight.
The flights stopped for a few months after the crash, and seem to be operating now.
I had been from CCU to Shillong and back by Alliance in early 2004. Not sure about the fare as it wasn't indicated in the ticket we got from the sponsors.(Those who watch kid's quiz programs might remember a quiz on the Northeast which aired sometime in 2004). Got a good view of Bangladesh on the way-perhaps 90% of the route was over foreign territory.

Yaa. Pawan hans also has regular scheduled flights to Tura(Meghalaya) and Arunachal Pradesh also from GHY. As for CD, it's ATR's connects all the major airports with GHY. Also DN has started in a big way there and seems to be doing quite well but Shillong flights have not yet started.

I believe Air Deccan has it's sights on Shillong and plan to start a CCU-GAU-SHILLONG service sometime this year (probably after the monsoons).

Shillong being the headquarters of the North Eastern Council, is key to DN's attempts at getting subsidy from the North Eastern Council for operating flights to different NE destinations - currently only the NEC only gives this subsidy to IC.

Also, I've been hearing for some time that some guy in Shillong is going to start a Private Airline serving only North East destinations (can't remember the Airline name). I'm sure if and when this airline kicks off, Shillong will be on their route map !!

Surya Airways Smile It has got permission to get Beech 1900's. Will be launching soon. Will be based in GHY. By the way IAF does not operate any civilian services. Only they serve some remote village who are the only one in the world that is exclusively dependent on Air Services for their supplies.

IC currently has twice weekly ATRS on CCU SHL route - one day via JRH and the other via TEZ

Vayudoot earlier used to operate this route. The route is mostly over Bangaladesh as ABN397 mentioned.

If you want to have a good description of this route , catch hold of Alexander Frater's "Chasing the Monsoon" , A good description of the flight is given by the author who took this flight enroute to visting Cherapunji.

SOme more news about Aviation development in the North East. This says that the Shillong Airport Terminal (which is probably the smallesst terminal in India) will be re-done.

06/03/07 Press Information Bureau (press release)

The Minister for Civil Aviation, Shri Praful Patel informed the Parliament today that the development/construction/improvement of airports and Civil Enclaves in the North-Eastern Region are being undertaken as per the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Airport Authority of India and the North-East Council (NEC). According to the MoU, the NEC reimburses 60% of the cost of the project and remaining 40% is funded by the Government of India, Ministry of Civil Aviation in equal ratio of loan (20%) and grant (20%).
An MoU between Government of Sikkim and AAI was signed in 2002 under which the project for construction of Pakyong (near Gangtok) airport is planned. The cost of the project is Rs. 340 crores. Its funding is being finalized in consultation with Planning Commission, State Government of Sikkim and AAI.
The details of major projects likely to be taken up during 11th Five Year Plan are: Expansion and strengthening of apron at Agartala, construction of new terminal building at Barapani, Shillong, extension of runway, construction of terminal building and new apron at Dibrugarh, construction of international terminal building additional parking stand, strengthening and extension of runway and construction of new control tower cum technical block at Guwahati, expansion of apron and additional link taxiway at Imphal, construction of new airport at Itanagar, Pakyong and Kohima, construction of new terminal building at Jorhat, operationalisation of airport for ATR-72 operation at Passighat and modification of terminal building at Silchar.

I believe that the biggest source of traffic should be Tourism. I have been to Shillong and I can say that without doubt that it is one of the most beautiful places in India. If the insurgency problem is solved somehow, I can see quite a big amount of traffic there and won't be surprised if there's a demand for an A319 size a/c either from CCU or DEL as most of Shillong traffic originates from these two places only.
