Oberoi group selected to operate 5-star hotel at B`lore airport

Bangalore, Dec 21: The Bangalore International Airport Limited has selected the Oberoi group to operate a 5-star hotel under the brand name trident Hilton.

"This truly will be the first airport hotel in India, within walking distance from the terminal building," a BIAL statement said today.

A consortium, consisting of skytanking and Indian oil, will build and operate the fuel farm and hydrant system of the airport.
Two consortia, consisting of Sats/Air India and Bobba Group/Menzies Aviation, will build and operate two general cargo warehouses for both domestic as well as international cargo.

LSG Sky Chefs and Taj Sats are the flight caterers for the airport. Consortia of Globeground India and Air India/Singapore Air Terminal services are responsible for providing ground handling services and for procuring the ground handling equipment required for operation at the airport.

Interesting.

IMO any major airport should have atleast three hotels to make life good for transit passengers. That is an airside hotel for Intl passengers transiting through India. A 5star on the landside as is the case with Oberoi, and a budget landside hotel which is more affordable for most people. Something like an Ibis or a Novotel.

OT, but isnt Trident Hilton the 4star division of Oberoi? I thought all 4star Oberois were renamed as Trident Hiltons.

AAI Expansion, modernisation of airports under progress
Coimbatore, Dec 21 (UNI)
Expansion and modernisation of airports in non-metro cities are under progress at a cost of Rs 1,000 crore, a top Airports Authority of India (AAI) executive said today.
Expansion works in airports, including Coimbatore, Madurai Kozhikode, are being undertaken, with steps for revival of non-operational airports in Southern Region, AAI Chairman K Ramalingam told reporters here.
Ramalingam, who was here to take part in the performance review meeting of airports in Southern Region, said Tuticorin airport has already been made operational and works were under progress in Salem and Puducherry.
Besides, scheduled flights have already started in Hubli in Karnataka and Rajamundry in Andhra Pradesh
With regard to Coimbatore, he said that the Integrated Cargo Complex would become operational soon.
The authority has asked Puducherry government to allot land for expansion and an MOU would be signed with that Government, once land was handed over to AAI.
AAI has offered its expertise to Abuja International Airport in Nigeria and negotiations were on with Turkey government for providing expert service, Ramalingam said.

    The Hindu has reported that the cabinet has approved a new international terminal for AMD.

    The conditions of unused airports in India is pathetic. AAI is responsible for the upkeep of these airports but as you can see from the ggogle picture of Kanpur airport, it is not doing a very good job.

    The rwy has not been recarpeted for the last 50 years. Bushes have grown in certain sections of the apron. Nobody in AAI gives a damn about this place. Why should these airports still be with AAI if it cannot maintain it?

    btw Kanpur has one more airport just 5 kms away from this one- Lakheri AFB.

    Yeah that;s correct. The one in the picture is mainly used for helicopter ops. The other one is CHAKERI AFB. Also HAL has a manufacturing unit there. So IAF and HAL + Civil use the same airport there.

    Btw no one has mentioned anything abt airports in NE. There are plenty of them and on except GHY noone is upto national standards.

    The Chakeri AFB is used by HAL and IAF.

    Govt likely to upgrade Dabolim airport by `08

    Goa's Dabolim international airport, located in the port town of Vasco, about 30 km from the capital city here, is expected to join the league of modern airports.

    The government is planning to upgrade the airport with state-of-the-art facilities by 2008.

    Nagpur airport all set to take off as cargo hub

    With a view to developing the Nagpur airport into a cargo and passenger hub, the civil aviation ministry has proposed a five-year exemption on all airport and navigation charges. This is for airlines undertaking cargo operations to and from the Nagpur airport. The exemption extends to both domestic and international sectors.

    Goa deserves a world class airport, it has the potential to be a world class tourist destination. Definitely an awesome place, but IMO it needs a few more budget hotels in the 3 or 4 star category.

    It also handles charter flights by MyTravel and the like for tourist groups.

    A UNI report (Dec. 27) says that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will visit Arunachal Pradesh in February 2007 where he will lay the foundation stone for the first airport project in the state.
    It is to be a greenfield airport near Itanagar and is to have night landing facilities.
    The Indian Air Force says it would like this airport to be top class to use it as a facility in case of problems with China.

    A UNI report (Dec. 2Cool says that the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has appreciated the role of Indian Air Force (IAF) for making the Kargil airfield fit for landing of aircraft. Two weekly flights between Srinagar and Kargil could be made a regular feature without any break for carrying people and the essentials till Srinagar-Kargil road reopens, he said.
    The Kargil airfield may be upgraded to an all-weather field with night landing for Airbus aircraft in the long term.

    The road to Kargil is horrible....besides it takes a long time and all depends how good is your luck...the climate...low visibility means danger to road traffic or maybe one landslide can cause hours and hours of traffic jams....

    Rs.35 bn expansion plan for Cochin airport
    The Cochin International Airport, the first airport in the country built under public-private partnership, will be expanded with an investment of Rs.35 billion
    'There are 18 projects which have been cleared, including a Rs.6.40 billion IT park, an aviation academy, a maintenance and hangar unit, star hotels and a golf course, all which would come up in the 500 acres of land which is with CIAL near the airport.
    By the end of the current fiscal we expect the number of weekly flights to go up to 325. British Airways is expected to be the next international airline to land here before the end of the current fiscal. Four more international carriers have also applied for landing rights

    A UNI report (Dec. 29) says that the Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel laid the foundation stone of a new International Terminal Building at Jaipur’s Sanganer Airport here on Friday. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has now taken up construction of the new building to cater to 250 inbound and 250 outbound passengers at a total cost of Rs. 95 crore.
    The terminal will be based on the latest technology of using glass and steel structures to match international standard of other world class airports. The centrally air-conditioned terminal building will have 14 check- in-counters, 10 customs counters and three security check-in- counters in addition to 12 numbers of immigration counters. Other facilities include escalators, passenger lifts, PA System, on-line baggage handling, CCTV, Aerobridges.
    Jaipur Airport is designated as the alternate airport to Delhi during foggy winter season. The AAI also plans to construct a new apron for 3 code-E, 3 code-D and 4 code-C type of aircraft with link taxi for international flights. A parallel taxi track connecting the new apron with the runway is planned to be executed in Phase-II.
    Under the Phase-I programme, the apron will be connected with the runway near the old dumbbell by constructing a parallel taxi track of 550 metres with the available land and it will be extended further up to the beginning of the runway after completion of land acquisition from the Government, say the report.
    There is also a proposal to construct a new integrated cargo complex to meet the growing requirement for cargo handling.
    The airport is currently equipped with latest state-of-the-art communication navigational aids, including visual aids on runway- 09 and precision approach lights on runway 27.
    During the year 2005-2006, Jaipur Airport has handled 52,389 international passengers. The terminal will catera to an annual traffic of 2.4 lakh passengers corresponding to the demand projection up to the year 2020-2021.
    The ceremony was attended by Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje was the Chief Guest.
    Ms. Raje also asked Mr., Patel to ensure more flights between Jaipur to Bangkok and a better link between Jaipur to Delhi via Udaipur.
    On December 29, 2005, the Central Government had granted international status to the domestic airport in Jaipur. With this, Jaipur will become the 14th international airport in the country.
    The Sanganer Airport belongs to the AAI. It is one of the 12 modern airports where passenger friendly facilities have been upgraded and modernized by the AAI. Since February 2002, Indian Airlines has been operating international flights from Jaipur to Dubai and Bangkok.
    The runway length at Jaipur is 9000 feet. The civil apron can accommodate four A320 aircraft at a time. There is also a plan to extend the runway to 12000 feet and construct nine in contact parking stands with aerobridges.
    Currently, there are over ten international airports in the country, including those at Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Guwahati, Kochi, Goa and Ahmedabad, says the report.
    The AAI is also planing to make Jaipur a super jumbo Airbus A380 ready airport, concludes the report.

    Its probably important incase they have to divert a 380 from DEL. Jaipur would probably be the closest airport.

    Wow - this is really great (if true). Good luck COK on your non-stop service to LHR!

    Does this mean that BA has chosen to start service to COK over AMD or ATQ?

    well i think BA is doing the right thing ..

    * AMD

    AI already has flights to lhr alongwith kuwait airways which gives convinient connections to lhr besides Qatar Airways is starting services to
    Doha so i assume a lot of traffic has been taken care as of now


    * ATQ

    Jet airways has hiked up freq upto 6 times a week ..... BA should do good on this route if Lufthansa is not confirmed starting its services

    BA is also eying on HYD on their immediate expansion

    NEW DELHI: The world's largest mechanical bird will cruise into the Indian skies next year [2007]. European airraft maker Airbus plans to bring its superjumbo A380 into India on a trial run early next year. And the superjumbo is expected to touch down in the national capital Delhi as well as the financial capital Mumbai as part of its flight plan.

    "We were earlier planning to fly the aircraft for the Bangalore Air Show in February next year [which is 2007]. But that airfield is too small. So we now plan to get the aircraft to Mumbai and Delhi early next year," Airbus' COO (customers) John Leahy said. "The A380 will definitely be here in the next couple of months," he added.

    The new owners of both Delhi and Mumbai airports are already working towards readying the airports and making them capable of handling an A380 landing and take-off.

    `Gulbarga airport will be of world class'

    "The Gulbarga airport will be of world class. We will equip it to handle aircraft of all sizes and designs," Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Kumar Pandey said here on Friday.

    The airport will have a 3.3 km runway to handle aircraft such as Boeing 747.

    Gulbarga is in Karnataka. And seems to hopped onto the bandwagon of building a "World class airport with a runway capapble of landing 747s" for a couple of ATRs per week, if they are lucky. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

    Every constituency now wants an international airport. And every (illiterate) MLA comes on TV nowadays wanting "A320 to land here".

    Praful Patel, on a Vir Sangvi show, talked about a dream situation in India of having airports every 150 km!! "Open up all our World War air strips and its possible."

    In the mad rush to open up air connections, feasibility/viability is an issue that gets overlooked. One example is in Tamil Nadu. Air Deccan made a grand announcement about starting operations to Salem, a decent sized and industrial Tier 2 city. Salem has a 737 capable runway and a good all-weather terminal. Now Deccan says it can't sustain operations as the economics will go against it. Airport is also too far, about 40 km from the town. Against the factor of excellent rail and road links with Chennai, Coimbatore and Banglore, not many really want to fly.
    Pondicherry is another. Jagson started Dornier operations linking Chennai-Tirupati and then Hyderabad with Pondy. Lasted for just a week and that's the end of it. All's quiet at Lawspet airport. Even a Dornier was considered unfeasible.

    In a way, its a classic repeat of the Vayudoot story and its wiz kid CEO Harsha Vardhan. The world's fastest growing airline that once flew to 100 stations and proudly advertised this on a full-page in India Today. Soon, a success story, with just Dorniers and Avros, that was lost in a huge sea of red ink.
