Nothing to get excited about. Most airlines are in this regimen or are moving to it. What will count in the end is good service and being genuinely customer friendly with good maintenance of all this expensive equipment.

Oily finger print marred screens and broken down seats and IFE controls are something AI must avoid.

But agree it will be a huge jump from what AI is today. Thanks to TECHNOLOGY.

Does that mean the newly delivered AIX 737-800s have PTVs as you mention in the beginning of the post or the next 6 to be delivrerd will consist of the above..

And what does the leased aircraft upgradation take place before or after delivery

They can have all the fancy IFE in the world.

But . . .

Will the IFE actually work?

If AI cabin maintenance don't care, if AI's Audio-Video engineers at its maintenance base are a bunch of morons, and if the Uncles and Aunties on board have the intelligence of squirrels and can't fix the IFE inflight when the slightest malfunction occurs, you're still better off taking a book.

Oh, and don't forget all the stupid people who fly AI who love to vandalize aircraft.

I suggest you think twice before you talk next time...not all grapes are sour. There are engg and pilots in AI also who are EXTREMELY dedicated to their work. You can't blame them because their resources are limited.
You expect an aircraft engg to fix, repair and mainten a IFE system with a bare training of 5 days?????

Add to the above :
Lack of spares, Inadequate trg, poor work environment leading to non-availability of trained personnel

Well, of course there are lots of dedicated AI engineers, etc. If there weren't, AI's planes would be falling out of the sky and we don't see that happening now, do we?

But at the end of the day, the passenger doesn't care why the IFE systems dont work and why the cabin interiors look more like the "Jhopdi in the Sky" rather than the "Palace in the Sky." There are lots of legit reasons, but once you've paid your ticket, you want the promised product.

well jaysit i agree with you...but you must also remember its the pax not the crew who spoil the acft in the first place. At stations where the turn around is 2hrs, its not possible to fix any snags without delaying the flight.
such snags are rectified back at base aka Mumbai. Now once an acft goes on a flt, it returns only after a day or two. Then the engg do their best to fix it. From the feedback i got from the AMEs, the pax are breaking things faster than they can fix it. In my own plane, pax were caught walking off wid the life vest coz they wanted to use it at the pool Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Yes but what if those passengers fool around with those IFEs, damage them and expect them to be brand new every time? IFE systems are altogether a different part...if all Aircraft Mx engg get the hold of repairing and fixing IFEs then electronic MX enggs will lose their jobs Very Happy The maintenance of IFEs should be handed over to some specialised agency.

But the problem with AI's interiors (IFE included), is that they never seem to be fixed. IFE units on all aircraft on all airlines are subject to misuse, and while this may be more on AI than on other carriers, other airlines fix them. Airlines like Qantas and SQ and South African and BA all send their aircraft on 48 hour rotations from home base, but at the end of the day whatever problems that arise get attended to.

Now, if AI has a spanking brand new IFE, far more complicated than anything its had so far, and if all those problems we've spoken about arise, whether stemming from stupid babus at the GOI to engineers perfunctorily trained in the IFE electronics, all the statements of how wonderful the new IFE will remain statements and just that.

I can just see some idiot passenger trying to cut off the cord of the IFE hand held control thinking that he can take it home to use as a remote or odd momento. The cabin crew should ensure that those who vandalize the aircraft will be penalized upon landing. In fact, AI should make a warning against vandalization of the IFE and aircraft part of the boarding announcements, stating quite emphatically that vandalizing anything will result in imprisonment and/or a $5000 fine. The thought of spending time in some stinking jail in Delhi or Mumbai should give people pause before they break things on purpose.

But in the end, you need management at all levels doing their job, inflight supervisors doing their jobs, maintenance personnel doing their jobs, etc. The kind of "chalta hai" attitude that currently pervades AI will only result in more of the same.
