I think it has got to do with offsetting the cost of Groshkov upgrade. I think it is time we break away from technological jam with Russia.

IAF moving Sukhoi fighter base to Tezpur

May 27, 2009
NEW DELHI: The Indian Air Force is shoring up its facilities in the northeast by upgrading infrastructure, improving airfields and moving a Sukhoi frontline fighter base to Tezpur.

“We certainly have plans to improve infrastructure in the region. We are in the process of developing four or five airfields and advance landing grounds, and putting our assets there. Soon we will be moving one squadron of Sukhois to Tezpur,” Air Chief Marshal Fali Homi Major, who demits office this month-end, said at his farewell press conference. He was responding to questions about the IAF’s plans in the wake of reports on developments across the eastern border.

To a question on China, Air Chief Marshal Major clarified that little was known about its actual capability, and downplayed a report attributed to him that Beijing was New Delhi’s enemy. He said the IAF was working to improve its capability, away from being “threat centric.”

The IAF had completed flight trials for mid-air refuel tankers and a decision was awaited on the choice between the two competitors, European and Russian. The government, he said, recently re-issued a Request for Proposal for supply of 22 attack helicopters and 15 heavy lift helicopters.

Assessing his tenure as Chief of the Air Staff, he said the IAF was in the process of a major transformation that would have a far-reaching impact. Almost every aspect of its capability was being systematically addressed with the acquisition and upgrading of a vast variety of equipment.

Air Chief Marshal-designate P.V. Naik, who was present, said that since January this year the IAF had decided to give women permanent commission in three streams — administration, accounts and legal. Referring to the April 30 Sukhoi crash near Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, in which one pilot was killed, the Air Chief-designate said while the court of inquiry was on, the accident was being probed for two problems —in the flight control system and the ejection system.

4 Sukhois at Tezpur to counter China buildup

NEW DELHI: India has finally added some much-needed military muscle in the eastern sector by basing its latest "air dominance" Sukhoi-30 MKI
fighters there, in a move to counterbalance China’s buildup of military infrastructure in Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) and south China.

The strategy to progressively base Sukhois in the North-East to counter China, as was reported by TOI almost two years ago, came to fruition on Monday after four of the jets formally touched down at Tezpur airbase in Assam. "Tezpur will have two Sukhoi squadrons (36 jets) in the near future. Next, we are looking at Chabua, also in Assam, to base these fighters as and when they come in," said a senior IAF officer. "Sukhois will bolster our capabilities against China, which has at least four airbases in TAR and another three-four in south China for operations against India," he added.

Moreover, with much-improved logistics through multiple air, road and rail links along the 4,057-km Line of Control , China can move a couple of divisions (15,000 troops each) to the border within a month. India has been quite tardy in countering these moves, with only 10 of the 73 all-weather roads earmarked for construction along the Sino-Indian border to improve troop mobility being completed till now.

While the propensity in India is to underplay the threat posed by China, it remains a clear and present one. Beijing, for instance, has around 60 launch pads for nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles near Delingha and Da Qaidam in central China, which clearly target north India and south Russia.

Induction of Sukhois at Tezpur and other airbases will clearly inject some credibility into India's "active deterrence" posture against China, especially since the 3,500-km Agni-III missile will be ready for operational deployment only by 2011.

Fully-loaded Sukhois, with a cruising-speed range of 3,200 km, after all, will be able to strike high-value targets inside China after taking off from Tezpur.

Sukhoi jets in NE skies from next week

TEZPUR: Sukhoi fighter jets will start flying in the skies of the northeastern region from next week.

According to defence officials, around six aircraft of the warplane's MKI variant have reached Tezpur air base in Assam a few days ago and a full complement of the warplanes is expected to arrive by the year end.

Flight training and operational sorties of the aircraft are likely to begin early next week and preparations were on in this regard, they said, adding that besides Tezpur, a full squadron of Sukhoi fighter jets would also be deployed at Chabua base in eastern Assam subsequently.

The IAF was also contemplating to deploy another squadron at Bagdogra air base in West Bengal, the officials said.

The Su-30s had operated from Tezpur air base when they were formally inducted in the base on June 15. Since then, the air base which has been upgraded to house the jets was also opened for civil aviation.

Four Su30s had landed at the base on June 12 for a symbolic induction and a fighter aircraft operated from the airbase after a gap of more than a year since MIG fighters were moved out of it, the officials said.

Having aerial refueling capability, the Su30 MKI multi-role combat jets have a combat radius of 1,500 km.

The MKI variant of the warplane which was inducted into the IAF in 2002 are said to have an impeccable safety record. The IAF already has three squadrons of Su-30 MKIs at Lohegaon and Bareilly.
