A Vegetarian zone on flights

http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/Opinion/Editorial/A_Vegetarian_zone_on_flights/articleshow/1640430.cms

Quotes:
The Chennai-based Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation (BMF) has suggested that airlines have separate vegetarian zones on the lines of no-smoking areas. With more and more Indians taking to the air and more and more vegetarians among them, it is a suggestion worth considering.

BMF managing trustee N Sugalchand Jain was quoted by PTI as saying that vegetarians felt uncomfortable when the passengers sitting next to them tucked into non-veg food. These days, foreign airlines flying into and out of India make it a point to recruit not just air-hostesses who know Hindi but chefs who prepare Indian cuisine, both north Indian and dakshin style.

It would be in the fitness of things if India’s airlines tried out the vegetarian-zone idea before any foreign carrier promoted the concept as its very own USP — unique selling proposition!

Not very feasible. Rolling Eyes

Might be worth while - though the boundary between vege and NV will be tough to decide up front (while allocating seats). Plus which groups gets the "premium" seats up front? And what happens when there are more of either group that the seating allocation?

Was once a huge issue in Air India and even made it to Parliament!!!
Happened when a case was "filed" about the way the cutlery used for veg and non-veg was "common", esp in J and F classes and passengers were getting offended by the way the cutlery was "too close" for comfort and was being shared!!

AI then had to revamp food settings on its serving trollies and offer separate cutlery. The order of service was revamped as well. Parliamentary committee to oversee this!!

Umm well sometimes frankly I feel Indians can make mountains out of molehills. I dont see why such an issue should be created. I can understand a veg person feeling uncomfy sitting next to someone eating meet, but I cant understand the issue with cutlery.

What utter rubbish!

People really amaze me at times... really ! What a stupid idea.. we talk about democracy and equality.. and are trying to segregate different sections of society by the food they eat! What next!

This is really appalling....

Myself being a strict vegetarian I have no issues if someone eats meat besides me....

Sounds like the south bombay brigage who have ensured that no Non-Veg hotels are present in their areas of cumballa hill, malabar hill etc.......they even manged to make sure Mac Donald outelt is veg only...talk about democracy....

What next, are they going to seperate passengers now on basis of those who drink and dont....as some bloke will say he cant stand the smell.....

If you are going to be so choosy about food and all that then dont fly. or charter your own f***ing jet.

What next zones based on North-Indian/South Indian? Will there be separate zones for Pure-Veg and Jain veg as well?

Allright doesn't this sound exaggerated? When you go to a hotel that serves both V and NV do you know if the same chef cooking your food was preparing a NV dish unless ou hack into the kitchen and personally inspect your food.... Just another media article

I know a lot of vegeterian people who do not eat in hotels serving NV. If such people have problem with NV on flights, they should not fly.

What a ridiculous proposal!

Its not just about India, but a lot of countries would have people who are strictly vegetarian. Inspite of this, there is never a segregation for such people.

Then there are people who are non-veg but dont eat beef and pork, people who eat only Halal meat, people who eat only Kosher meals, Jain meals, etc etc.....

So do we create separate zones for all such people?? In this age of reducing seat pitches and cramped aircraft zones, separate areas for people with different dietary preferences is a luxury...

Maybe they should charge a premium for people who ask for such separate zones....

9W offers only veg meals on some flights to Gujarat n Rajasthan from BOM!! Sad .. tht in itself is discrimination!! having a separate veg zone is prespostorous to sya the least... next they are going to hv a separate air-tight enclosure to ensure that even the smell of chicken/fish does not waft into their "protected area"!!!

same here, I am also vegetarian and also have no issue with the person next to me eating non-veg... this idea is just silly... as someone said here earlier, for those who refuse to eat from places that serve NV's should just not fly.... or perhaps consider launching an 100% vegetarian airline...

idea of having a Vegetarian zone is just silly

Why? It might make business sense for 9W. The might not want to worry about meal choices when they know that 98% of the pax will have one kind of meal.

If wrong no. of NV meals get on flt., a) pax will be disappointed and might remain hungry b) the food will go waste.
Whereas other way round, in most of the cases, if the NV eating pax is hungry, the absence of NV meals does not mean the pax won't eat. Other way round ...

I just can't understand what this is all about... Why should any veggie have problem when someone eats nonveg besides him? At least I do not mind it. And as the_380 said, what will these fellows do when they go to an hotel which serves both veg & non veg?

What about segragating all the stinkin' grass eaters?
But seriously, this is beginning to go beyond a joke now. I have nothing against various communities and their cultural beliefs, but when you live in a democratic society, please keep your cultural beliefs at home.
Sadly, we are seeing an increasing political clout being wielded by members of an economically STRONG community (examples of Mumbai south suburbs being "cleansed" of meat shops). While this example is ridiculous, this IDEA is now acquiring really SINISTER and DANGEROUS dimensions. It is the thought that disturbs me more than anything else. Mad

This is an excellent idea. Actually there is a zone for each passenger and that is his seat and his tray in front of him. Period. He paid only for that and whatever beyond it is none of his bloody business.
I don't know when people will learn , whatever others do to themselves is not their problem and they should be concerned with their own actions.

My land lord in BLR has leased his flat to me on the condition that I won't cook non-veg food at home. I had no choice but to accept this condition.
