Watch out for debris from space, airline pilots told
New York: Airline pilots worldwide have been warned to be wary of falling debris from the American and Russian satellites which collided recently as people across Texas reported seeing what looked like a fire ball streaking through the sky.

The warning was issued by the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as scientists have cautioned that debris could circle the earth for thousands of year and could prove hazardous for satellites.

Alerts were issued as authorities got numerous calls from people about sighting of falling debris and television network showed the fireball streaking the sky last morning but it was not clear whether it was result of debris falling through the atmosphere or some other phenomenon.

FAA said it was not sure what it was but did not rule out the possibility of it could be debris falling across Texas. "We don't know what it was," said FAA spokesman Roland Herwig.

Local Sheriff's Office used a helicopter to search after callers said they thought they saw a plane crashing, a spokesman said.

The US Strategic Command said there was no connection to the sightings over Texas and Tuesday's collision of satellites.

Could be like the debris that fell around a Lan Chile A340 into Sydney a while ago.

But most of it should burn up on reentry?

Which is total B*S, since the satellite parts will be entering the atmosphere at several thousand kts. There is no way the pilots will see them or be able to react before they collide with them. Just see how fast another aircraft approaches if you are sitting in the cockpit. One moment it is a flyspeck on the windscreen, next moment it is overhead.

Nonsense, any debris entering the atmosphere would behave no different than a meteor. It would burn up instantly upon hitting the atmosphere, and several miles above where any civilian aircraft would cruise.

On the other hand, the debris would be a nice addition to the show for those of us who enjoy meteor showers and star-gazing.

Not all the debris burns up completely. Pieces may still hit the earth, and cruising aircraft are endangered.
