Hi Guys
It would helpful if we can expand the photo forum in to a more organised spotting club. Also if details of the picture (date, time, equipment used) can be revealed it can serve to help each other out.
What do you think ? _________________ ----------------------

Thanks. I too was amazed. Believe it or not, I hardly did any post processing to the pics. Just very minor brightness and contrast and cropping of course.
It is totally natural.
Used a D90 + 300mm F/4 and -0.7EV. Next time will put in to a slower shutter and increase aperture.
I still need to learn from some of the gurus on A-I.net. _________________ ----------------------

Devesh...did you use 300mm prime lens or regular G/ED/ED VR lens at 300mm. Also, rather than using slow shutter, you would rather want to increase the ISO.

Aseem. Thanks for the tips. On the 17th I had put the camera in Program mode and forgot to change it, hence the super high shutter and low aperture. On 19th I chose Aperture priority and chose F/10 F/11 approx and the shutter speeds were in the 1/500th to 1/750 range.
In response to your question the 300mm f/4 is an ED-IF no VR prime lens. Not as prime as the f/2.8. That is my next item I am saving up for. All the 17th shots the KFA and Jet are 300mm DX format.
I am a little apprehensive of the noise created by a higher ISO. What is a safe level I can go to and avoid the graininess ?
On my Flickr, I upload the EXIF.
What would you and the gurus advise should be the ideal settings. I am guessing 1/1000th, F11 or F16, and ISO400, but will welcome some guidance.

Normally when I shoot, I keep my aperture in the f/10 -f/13 range is the sun is out proper. I am forced to use my Sigma 70-300mm after my Canon 70-200 f/4 died!! This lens works best at f/10 - f/13.
In broad daylight ISO 200 works best for me. I go for 400 only towards the evening. On a Canon 350/400/450 ISO 400 is the max you can do without color noise. I thought Nikons were better, but of late I am using a D200 with a 500mm lens and found extremely high noise levels even at ISO 400 which is unacceptable for this class of a camera.
Ultimately the noise levels in each camera are different so you'll have to find your own balance.
My best bet for aviation photography is f/11 to f/13 ISO 200 shutter 500 to 1000th of a sec. |

for me situation is a bit different. Here sunlight is a big issue and I am relatively closer to planes than you guys. I prefer to keep ISO 100/200 on even 400 based sunlight and how close I am to the plane. My aperture is invariable f/8, as I need to keep it slight more open than you guys due to less bright sunlight. My shutter speed varies from 1000 to above depending how close I am to plane. Have taken a few at 1600 when right below the plane. Mostly shoot in A mode, but switch to M when challanged by circumstances. Never had noise problem with my D200 in any daylight situation and also never had to use above that during the day. I mostly use my 18-200VR for aviation photos and otherwise. Plan to take out my 75-300 f/4 the next time I go just to compare the results, which shall be coming Sat.
p.s. also VR allows you to shoot at lower shutter speed as a result you don't need to increase ISO, but again lower shutter speed isn't something you'd want in aviation photography. _________________ [url=http://openflights.org/user/aseemsjohri]

I agree grain and noise at ISO400 is completely unacceptable in a D200. I am using a D90 now. On the 19th, I shot at F/11 at the speeds were in between 1/500th and 1/800th ISO200. _________________ ----------------------
