As I had an overnight client meeting to Kuala Lumpur (KL) I had to undertake a short trip to KL so here’s the trip report on the same:

Date of Departure & Time: January 17th 2007
Flight No – SQ116 ETD : 17:00
Aircraft – Boeing 777-200
Flying time : 40 Minutes
Seat: 34A

PS: I am still figuring out how to link the photos within the TR if you cant see the suggest to also log in to Flickr where I have uploaded the same.

Since it was an evening flight I arrived at Changi airport at about 15:30 hours directly from my office. I had booked my seats online and also printed my own boarding pass.

One can now check in online and print the boarding pass on all SQ flights. They have also installed self service Kiosk at Changi airport where one can print boarding pass. I forgot to click the snap of the check in kiosk.

Since I had some time to loiter around I decided to get myself a leg massage. Changi airport has installed Osim branded leg massage at selected points at the airport wherein one can just sit and get ones legs massaged free of cost.

I tried to do some spotting but found the traffic was all SQ as the problem with terminal 2 is that you get mainly SQ birds.

Since it was a 40 minute flight I knew the service would be very short and nothing to write about. News papers were kept near the aircraft door and people could pick whatever newspaper they wanted before entering the aircraft. The newspaper selection mainly consisted of The strait Times Singapore edition, Business times, Malaysian Strait Times and a few in mandarin and Malay language.

Push back was on time & the in-flight safety video started playing, Hot towels were not provided since this was a short flight But I think that irrespective of the duration of the flight, towels should be provided as its not much a hassle. Laughing One would expect this from a premium airline.

Take off was very smooth and were air bone within minutes.

Seat belt sign was turned off and I surprisingly saw quite a few people plugging in their own earphones with the help of an adapter to watch the IFE. This being a short flight SQ does not give any head phones but strangely the IFE is kept on

Inflight service is basically Tea/Coffee or Juice. I selected Coffee.

I had hardly finished my coffee when the captain came on line saying that we are about 140 miles from KL and would start our decent shortly and advised the cabin crew to prepare for landing. I found it amusing that we hardly went to cruising mode that we started our descent.

We took some quick turns and made a touch down at KLIA fairly quickly. Over all a typical SQ flight nothing much to complain about.

Comments: Load factor was almost 95% primarily comprising of business executives going to KL for meetings or Malaysians going back from SIN after their meetings. SQ and MH have a monopoly on the SIN-KL route till 2008 & between them fly 26 flights daily with SQ using Boeing 777-200 aircrafts and MH using Airbus 330. Till about 6 months back MH used to use Boeing 737-400 on these routes. The price of the ticket is SGD 405 dollars which is almost the price to Shanghai from Singapore. The price is a rip off but because of monopoly one does not have a choice. Hence I feel that at least a hot towel should have been provided when they price the ticket so high for a 30 minute flight. Of course a lot of pressure is being put on both governments to open the route to LCC with Tony Fernandez pushing for his Air Asia to fly to Singapore.

Date of Departure & Time: January 18th 2007
Flight No – SQ117 ETD : 18:50
Aircraft – Boeing 777-200
Flying time : 40 Minutes
Seat: 36A

Since I knew the return trip would be almost similar to the one I took from SIN-KUL I decide not to track any record of the flight, but since I was visiting the KL airport for the first time, thought of taking some Pictures.

KLIA: Overall the airport scores quite well as it is huge and spacious & looks like a huge tent. Of course it lacks those carpets which are rolled over in Changi. The one good thing about KLIA is that there is free wireless internet available across the airport hence once can easily work and catch up on their emails. The strange thing about KLIA is that if you arrive you need to take an internal train to reach to another terminal to clear immigration and customs. I found quite a few people who were first timers to KLIA a bit confused whether to take the train or not and searching for immigration/customs counter.

Overall KLIA scores well and no wonder they received the best airport award for 2006. The only drawback is it is quite far from city centre takes a good one and half hour by road & about 35 minutes by high speed train.
