Thai Airways to introduce A380s on Bangkok London route

Thai Airways will be using its new Airbus A380 super-jumbos on its Bangkok-London route starting from the middle of 2009, the airline has announced.

The Thai national carrier has ordered six super-jumbos from Airbus in a contract that is reported to be worth approximately $1.9 billion. All six of the A380s will be first delivered to London but four will actually be deployed from Bangkok on other routes.

Currently, Thai operates twice daily service from London Heathrow to Bangkok, and the airline will maintain this same frequency level once the A380s are brought into service.

Four of the super-jumbos will initially fly on the London-Bangkok route, but two of the four will then be re-deployed on other services originating from the Thai capital.

Emirates Airline is also planning to use its A380s for flights to and from London.

A Thai spokeswoman said that the airline would release details of the configuration on board at a later time. She also indicated that the actual date of the commencement of service on the super-jumbos would depend on the date they are received from Airbus.

In the interim, the Thai Airways service connecting London Heathrow and Bangkok will continue on the current schedule, with departures daily at 12.30 and 21.30.

Thai Airways has also announced that it is introducing A330-300 aircraft into its fleet, which feature increased seat width and also power outlets for laptop computers, in the economy class cabin. In business class, the number of seats has been reduced so that seats could be reclined by a further 20 per cent.
