Air India violating CVC norms on cabin-crew accommodation: BKS27 Aug, 2008, 2121 hrs IST, PTI

MUMBAI : Shiv Sena-backed Bharatiya Kamgar Sena (BKS) on Wednesday alleged that national air-carrier, Air India, was violating the Central Vigilance Commission's (CVC) guidelines on the selection of hotels for its cabin crew.

"The procedure followed for hotel selection is in gross violation of CVC guidelines," BKS' General Secretary and President of the All India Cabin Crew Association, Kiran Pawaskar, said in a press release here.

The Air India management was also violating the bilateral agreements of 1988 and 1995 signed with the AICCA, he alleged.

Now cabin-crew were being put up at motels instead of hotels and in areas unsafe for women, Pawaskar alleged.

"No AICCA representative is allowed inspection (of the accommodation sites) despite the bilateral agreements," he said.

Earlier, Pawaksar along with representatives from AICCA, a section of the Air India Employees Union, Air India Service Engineers Association and three Sena MPs held a meeting with Union Civil Aviation Minister, Praful Patel, in Delhi and apprised him of the situation prevailing a year after the merger of Air India and Indian into one entity.

The three Sena MPS who met Patel are Bharat Kumar Raut, Sanjay Raut and Mohan Rawle, The three unions -- AICCA, AIEU and AIEA -- together claim the support of more than 7,500 employees in the now merged entity.

IA's young airhostesses go on protest leave over low salary

'Sick' airhostesses get strong medicine
28 Aug 2008, 0551 hrs IST, Saurabh Sinha,TNN

NEW DELHI: Going on sick leave to protest disparity of pay with their seniors has cost the Maharaja's young and fighting fit airhostesses dear. Air India despatched its doctors to check on these airhostesses at home and promptly suspended those who did not get admitted to hospital for check-up or treatment or left their houses locked.

While the protesting airhostesses say up to 10 of them have been suspended, an airline spokesperson confirmed action had been taken against four till Wednesday afternoon for "dereliction of duty".

The airhostesses had resorted to the protest leave, contending that young cabin crew members get about Rs 28,000 per month while seniors can get up to Rs 1 lakh. Following the sudden sick leaves, AI was forced to recall even airhostesses grounded for reasons like being overweight, to maintain flight schedules.

One suspended airhostess is "recuperating" in Bangalore and others are learned to be in Delhi. The suspension letters of two Delhi-based crew members shows that the merged Air India-Indian Airlines entity, National Aviation Company of India Ltd, is cracking the whip on protesting airhostesses.

What parallel universe of absolute entitlement do these young air-hostesses live in? In every endeavor, those with experience earn magnitudes more than newbies. When you show your mettle, you rise up the ranks. AI did well by throwing their collective butts out.

Yeah, atleast they showed that being a govt. employer, you cant do what you like and still have a job in hand. Some govt. employees think that their job is permanent no matter what they do.

Update
Air India will now start implementing its 'fly-light' programme. Most flights especially on domestic (IA) will have smaller meals/less food, lesser number of newspapers and just half a tank of water. The inflight mag may also shed a lot of weight.
Domestic pax will also be 'discouraged' from using the washroom as far as possible and use facilities at airports.

Another move also being planned is to ask crew to pack lighter.

AI's fuel bill this year is expected to be Rs 8000 cr. These moves it says will help it save Rs 400 cr.

AI will also regularly follow its wash programme of aircraft. (The document is called "Dust free programme", says the source who saw it.)

‘‘We have noticed that passengers generally do not take food in short-haul flights as well as long-haul (within the country) night flights, and a good quantity of that is transported back. We are also contemplating serving snacks instead of proper meals on our night flights’’.
A circular on this and cost-cutting to all departments including operations, ground staff duty (GSD) and engineering departments "will observe all procedures, leading to better fuel -efficiencies in operating procedures including equipment maintenance and service availability.
These departments should also formulate innovative measures for fuel conservation/efficiency and follow best practices in this regard.
We are also engaging the services of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) for recommending measures for fuel efficiency ..."

Air India says that the merger will take longer as HR issues are proving difficult. (The Government recently gave it two-years for a complete merger.)

Air India suspends 9 'sick' airhostesses
Agencies

New Delhi, August 28: Air India has suspended a total of nine air hostesses who reported sick during the past few days to protest alleged disparities in their pay-scales and other issues.
While a total of nine airhostesses were suspended, no airhostess reported sick on Thursday, an airline spokesperson said.

He said that the suspensions came after the airline's doctors conducted medical checks and found that none of them were actually sick. He also maintained that these hostesses were not supported by the concerned unions.

A section of airhostesses had resorted to this kind of action to protest what they called ‘glaring disparity’ in pay-scales between seniors and juniors.

They have also been protesting the de-rostering of over-weight hostesses from flight duties, an airhostess said on grounds of anonymity.

True, but we don’t know what the differences are. How much more do they make, how much more do they work, what’s it like in relation to the industry?
They might well not have a valid reason to protest, Im just saying we don’t know enough to make a sound judgement.

AI working on new booking system for passengers

Ashwini Phadnis
New Delhi, Aug. 28 On the first anniversary of the merger of Air India and Indian, National Aviation Company of India Ltd (NACIL), the newly created entity, is focusing on increasing passenger comfort and on ways to cut costs so as to bring the airline back into profitability.

As part of the initiative, a high-level committee of the airline has initiated dialogue with shortlisted service providers for procurement of a Passenger Service System (PSS) the installation of which will help passengers not only make seamless booking across the network of the airline, but also earn and burn miles on any of the 21 airlines that are members of the global airline grouping, Star Alliance.

Air India has been invited to join Star Alliance which already has Lufthansa, Air Canada, British Midlands, Singapore Airlines and United Airlines as its members.

“The installation of the PSS will help global distribution systems and booking offices anywhere in the world to display the full domestic and international network of the airline as against the current system where two different in-house PSS solutions are being used,” sources told Business Line.

It was on August 24 last year that Air India and India Air ceased to be legal entities with the filing of the approval of the application for merger with the Registrar of Companies. The two airlines were dissolved without being wound up and both started functioning under NACIL.

Besides, in order to cut its fuel bill, NACIL is taking several steps including implementing a cruise mach policy, which involves reducing the speed of the aircraft to reduce fuel burn, on the Boeing 747-400 and Boeing 777 fleet and is planning to implement this on the remaining Airbus A-310 and Boeing 737 aircraft in the fleet.

The airline has also decided to rationalise both domestic and international schedules from implementing several measures, including rationalising the uplift of reading materials and meals so as to reduce aircraft weight.

Both these measures alone are expected to result in annual saving of around Rs 1,075 crore.

Reconsider suspension of Air India flights: Korea to govt

New Delhi, Aug 28: The Korean travel trade industry has requested the Indian government to ask the national carrier, Air India, to reconsider its decision to suspend flights to Incheon from October.

In an appeal to Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel, Korean travel trade firms said the decision had come at a time when the number of visas being issued to Indians had risen by 64 per cent in the past three years to over 71,000 per year.

This was expected to increase to more than 80,000 this year, the 'India Tour', which represents Korean travel agents, said, adding that AI's decision "to discontinue flight operations from October 1" had come as a "big shock to all the Korean travel trade."

Air India has decided to pull out of several destinations as a part of its cost cutting measure.

When contacted, officials in the national carrier confirmed that a decision had been taken to suspend operations on certain non-profitable sectors like Los Angeles, Seoul and Dar Es Salaam.

The Korean travel body said Air India has decided to pull out of the Hong Kong-Incheon (South Korea) route on its Mumbai-Delhi-Hong Kong-Incheon sector, after the number of flights were doubled from two to four per week from last December.

NEW DELHI: Based on the offer of talks and the threat of suspension, the national carrier's protesting air hostesses reported back for duty on Thursday.

Some of the younger cabin crew members had gone on sick leave to protest pay disparity with their seniors. The airline had started suspending those crew members who were allegedly feigning illness.

"The airline is going to hold talks with us on Friday and the protesting young crew in back on work," said a crew member.

On its part, airline spokesperson Jitendra Bhargava said: "No cabin crew staffer is on sick leave today. Also we did not bring back any grounded air hostess for operating our flights when some staffers were on protest leaves."

This would be a great move and I hope they go with a standard solution already in place in the *A - so integration will be easy and fast.

In all likelihood, they will get an NIC or something to design a 'world class' system, just like their 'world class' website. Rolling Eyes

Don't you know, we're the biggest IT superpower, so why should we use the primitive systems that other airlines from other countries use? Twisted Evil

Update
An International Civil Aviation Organisation team is in India right now.

It has appreciated the development taking place in the aviation sector.
The 12-member team also visited IA's and now Air India's Jet Engine Overhaul Complex at Delhi.

Release from Air India says:
The JEOC was established in 1991, in collaboration with a US-based company at the cost of USD 11 million for providing in-house maintainance, overhaul and repair facility to the airlines.
Currently the facility repairs, overhauls and does maintainance works of V2500 and JT8D engines of Airbus and Boeing planes.
During their visit, the NACIL(I) officials explained to the ICAO members the functioning of its commercial and engineering facilities in the country.
The members expressed eagerness to know the reasons of merger of the Air India and Indian Airlines and how it has proved beneficial for the company.
The members later left for Mumbai to visit the various establishments. Yesterday, they visited Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) and saw the new runway and appreciated the developments taking place at the national capital’s airport.

Air India plans daily flights to Kerala cities

By Afifa Jabeen Quraishi Saudi Gazette
JEDDAH – Air India, the national carrier of India from where more than a million of the Kingdom’s expatriate workers come, will operate daily flights between Dammam and Riyadh to Cochin and Calicut in the southern Indian state of Kerala starting Sept. 7, said Deepak Anand, regional manager of the airlines.
“The timing of the introduction of these flights has been chosen to coincide with the festivals of Eid Al-fitr and Onam,” said Anand.
“The daily Airbus A320 flights will operate with a configuration of 20 Executive and 125 Economy class seats,” he said.
With the addition of the 14 flights, Air India will operate 47 flights weekly up from the present 33 flights for an increase of 42.4 percent, Anand said.
Anand, who took charge as Air India’s regional manger for Saudi Arabia last month, said the airline is also focusing on expansion in the Western Province.
“November will see new flights between Riyadh and Dammam to Hyderabad, Chennai and Delhi, respectively,” he said.
Fifty-six additional flights will operate for Haj pilgrims from India, he added.
Regarding the arrival of Jet Airways in the Kingdom in competition with Air India, Anand said he does not see any problem.
“Air India will not be hurt as it is a direct operator between Saudi Arabia and India; however, other GCC carriers carrying Indian passengers by indirect flights through their airline hubs in the Gulf may be affected,” he said.
“We welcome Jet Airways, or any other Indian carrier opening in the Gulf.”
It was reported that Jet Airways will start daily flights between Mumbai, Delhi, Riyadh and Jeddah starting in October.
According to the Hindu Business Line daily, the governments of India and Saudi Arabia have allowed more than one airline from each side to operate between the two countries, after the expiry of a 3-year moratorium imposed by the Indian government in 2004 which allowed only Air India and its subsidiaries to fly to Saudi Arabia.
“The decision paved the way for Jet Airways to apply to the government for permission to operate in Saudi Arabia,” it said.Saudi Arabia is the second country after the U.A.E. to which Jet Airways has been permitted to fly in recent weeks.
There are about 1.4 million expatriate Indians in Saudi Arabia and at least 1.4 million Indians across the Gulf.

AI mulls sabbatical scheme for non-operational staff

Ashwini Phadnis

New Delhi, Aug. 31 In an attempt to reduce its workforce, Air India may offer its staff involved in non-operational work a sabbatical scheme which will allow them to take a minimum of two years and a maximum of five years off from their job with the airline.

The scheme, which is still under consideration, is unlikely to cover pilots, engineers and cabin crew personnel.

“The idea of the scheme is to allow staff to enhance skills. The period for which the staff is on leave will be considered as a lien which ensure that their jobs are protected if they wish to come back,” sources told Business Line.

Those availing themselves of the sabbatical will be entitled to air passages and medical benefits but will not get their pay and allowances.

The final decision of allowing someone who has applied for the sabbatical scheme will be at the sole discretion of the management.

This is just one of the proposals that are being examined by the airline to control costs and get the airline back in the black.

The implementation of the proposal is likely to result in an annual saving of about Rs 16-20 crore in the annual salary bill of the airline.

If the proposal is implemented, it will be the second time that such a scheme is being introduced in the airline.

Earlier, in late 1990s, the airline had implemented such a scheme and about 250 personnel had availed themselves of the offer.

The airline is also looking at controlling costs by rationalising its domestic and international flight operations, putting in place systems to ensure that fuel efficiency is maximised and by deploying more of its own fleet of new aircraft instead of operating leased aircraft.

Update From an Air India release; thanks to source.

New fuel conservation measures undertaken by Air India are to bypass using the auxiliary power unit. Aircraft will operate ground power unit while on ground and use one engine taxi while taxing to the bay or to the runway.

Flight planning will now be in more detail to calculate exact fuel requirement for a flight, instead of using a full tank. This entails planning fuel calculations on a daily basis on availability of optimum routes in terms of wind, flight levels and overflying charges.

Air India is in touch with the various original equipment manufacturers to monitor the performance of its planes as given in the guarantees incorporated in the original agreements.

Agreements are also being signed with IATA for conducting fuel efficiency analysis, with a high-powered IATA team holding preliminary discussions with Air India in Mumbai recently. This analysis would cover all areas of flight operations, flight planning, engineering and maintenance of aircraft as well as ground support equipment.

The IATA team will also work with the Air India's senior management to define the scope and approach to the implementation of cost-saving measures.

Air India will also review passenger amenity storage in the galley on aircraft --- includes the use of large and extra crates, bottles etc.

No crew detained at London, Frankfurt: AI
9/2/2008 8:50:01 PM

The national air-carrier was responding to a media report which said that its crew-members had been detained at Frankfurt and London airports in the last fortnight for shoplifting and burglary
Air India on Tuesday (September 2) termed as “incorrect” that 45 of its crew were detained allegedly for shoplifting in Frankfurt and 15 more subsequently at London for burglary. “The two alleged instances of 45 Air India crew members having been detained for shop-lifting at Frankfurt and another set of (15) crew being subsequently detained in London are incorrect," Air India said in a press release.
