I think it helps ground staff differentiate between their -700 and -800. The -81/82/83/88 all pretty much look the same. The -87 is smaller and always has the screwdriver tail. The MD-88 uses similar engines to the rest of the MD-8x models, the PW JT8D 200 series while the MD-90 uses the larger IAE V2500s.
