Here is a TR from A.net
http://www.airliners.net/aviation-forums/trip_reports/read.main/125437/

He says AI's service on the 77L is better than almost any airline in the world and he is well-traveled. He gave it is highest rating ever.

It is almost like there is 3 different Air Indias:

1. IC - solid service
2. Air India 747, 310, 772 - unreliable, lousy service, tattered planes
3. Air India 77L and 77W - competes with SQ, EK, etc.

My question is:

Will the GOI manage to screw this up to? They need to convert the entire company over to these standards and they can be one of the best in the entire world. I've heard from family that their 77W service is excellent as well. Sadly, I'm not very optimistic.

the trip reporter though not oblivious of the frontal image of AI is redressing AI in a single shot.

the nonstops draw awes over even CO & 9W but the AI we get to see at BLR, HYD, MAA ... is much left to be desired as india's pride.

Sure does differ from how a LOT of people think. Very Happy Well put report. My friend's dad recently flew F in Air India BOM-JFK in the 772LR and he was damn impressed, before he flew, he was of the opposite opinion, after the flight, he changed his opinion, wants to fly them again to Shangai Razz (a mistake though Wink )

AI needs to get rid of those A310 fast. IC's A300s are famous and AI's A310s are infamous!

The NA non-stops have been consistently getting good reviews. Now only if they could do the same on all their routes.

The problem with AI is that they are good in introducing facilities and amenities but they dont know how to maintain them. Lets hope AI proves me wrong. Rolling Eyes

AI have never failed to impress me with their catering.

I flew them EWR-CDG-BOM in 2005 and the food was some of the best I've ever had. Wish I could say the same about the plane. Hope AI maitains this standard on their 77Ls.

Excellent TR...One of the best I have read. AI should set similar standards on all sectors. I usually fly J Class on Gulf sector and not get even 50% of what is written in the TR.

I hope that with the 787's things will change. (Hope for the Best)

Couple of months ago when my wife was hospitalized, my parents rushed back from JFK to BLR on less than a day's notice. But the entire journey -- from ticketing till landing in BLR was, according to my dad, one of the smoothest they ever experienced. And this was on AI and they flew the 777.

Karatecatman - I think you need to send this report to the contacts that you have in Air India, I am sure it will make their day...

Don't know why Every Bad Experience makes ppl zero in on AI's A310s. Maintainence/Sanitisation of Toilets and/or Galleys, etc of Aircraft depends on the Cabin crew. Not to hurt u, the_380!

I have been on many AI 310 flights (some as long as 6 hrs!!) and they were OK..ish, if not Good. But they, certainly, didn't Stink. Of course, as i said, no two flights are the same! It might be that some ppl may not have had good Experiences with certain flights. But, it doesn't mean that every time the blame-game should be played on the A310s.

PS: Snags Apart. Just IF Service.
PS (2): AI does need to get rid of their 310s!
PS (3): I hope this doesn't affect ....u know waht ....hehe !

I agree - I've seen ancient a/c on other airlines that are maintained well and even refurbished to make it seem brand new. AI should invest in proper maintenance of their fleet - including the 310s. There's nothing really preventing them from replicating the 77L experience on these older 310s - (except of course the money Wink).

That is the right sentence man, unfortunately, not every flight is as lucky as that one, no wonder the bad name for AI in all these years

Its lovely to see such a glowing review on the AI non stop products...Only if Far east and West Asia are better...
Amazing to see such reviews. I guess the nonstops have a really good thing now... BOM-JFK isnt performing as well compared to DEL-JFK

It was reported that BOM-JFK had poor loads for quite some time initially. Anyone how loads are on bothe BOM-JFK and DEL-JFK compared to say 9W, CO, and DL?

An LR Pilot had confirmed that BOM-JFK goes FULL on Weekends. What about the loads on Weekdays?

That's a great update and good to hear. Goes without saying that the quality of the AI service on the LR must be responsible for the growth.

The weekends are key - if they are going full, that implies spill over traffic will move to the week days in time. Plus there's enough money to be made from full and higher-yielding weekend traffic.

Very nice to hear!! Now if only they can make this consistant.

Actually its as nice to hear that the flight went full, most of the feedback im
hearing/reading goes on about how these non stops fly empty.

AI A310's ar enot bad at all in economy class: pretty ok if you can forgive the scratched screens and that sort of thing. The seats in the rear section (where it is 2-3-2) are often the worst.

But in J class its horrid and not value for money at all: the last (and only time) i took that option i found a 2-3-2 configuration where it was 2-2-2 in the late 90's. Broken and stained seats, non-functional IFE etc etc: only the unlimited supply of booze and good food kept spirits up.

Rather stick to 9W with a 737-800 which has a much superior business class on a narrowbody and is non-stop with better timings.

so one good TR does not make for a good airline: the way ahead is rocky for AI.

Contradictory responses there, but I guess the loads vary wildly day to day.

Flew JFK-DEL on May 9th and BOM-JFK on June 8th. Y was around 50% occupancy on both flights, and the front looked less than that.
The transfer in DEL from international to domestic does involve lugging the checked in baggage along, while the outbound transfer was smooth.
Service on the JFK-DEL flight was Good. On the BOM-JFK leg, there were fewer drink runs.

I will definitely fly this route again with AI. I hope that they open a checkin counter after customs on the international to domestic transfer, though.

When the new integrated terminal comes online at DEL, transfer will be smoother, and I'm sure that AI will set up a counter after customs.
