Pilots to fly into engineers' zone
Can a pilot do an engineer's job? The Directorate General of Civil Aviation thinks so. In a shocking decision taken this week, pilots have been deemed eligible to carry out pre-flight inspection of aircraft during transit halts.
Now, bowing to pressure, apparently from the influential airline lobby, the DGCA has amended the Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR), series 'F', part VIII, pertaining to Airworthiness, effective January 26.

I prefer the Maintenance better than the Flight ops work.
Pilots could qualify for certifying a weather diversion Aircraft for Departure provided there is no Maintenance Action needed & the Aircraft is snag free for larger commercial jets.This requires the mandatory certification under experienced AME.
On smaller Aircraft too Pilots can certify Preflights.
Remember the sentence "No maintenance Action needed" is very important.
Personally I believe Pilots do a bad job at Maintenance

An IC instructor pilot once had a conversation with me. Ofcourse he made it sound like a joke...although some parts might be true. no offences to pilots here.
He asked: How is your studies going on?
Me: Nice uncle.
He: If your studying well then your an engineer else if not then your a pilot!!! 
He calls himself basically a "high paid driver" 
But this move by DGCA is nonsense. Later will you make them serve food to passengers also?
A pilot should be given a right to inspect any particular thing if there's a difference in opinion between the two pilots...imo

What is the situation like with modern aircraft in other countries?
Presumably much of onboard maintenance now is of the check card/laptop/manual, replace if found defective, check card/laptop/manual again . . . type? (Hawk, I am not talking about hard maintenance especially outside the cabin)
Carry forward Minimas are probably not going to change too?
I would think that with technology coming around, this was bound to happen. My days as a young shippie, even to change a bulb or fix a fuse we had to call the 'leccie or to send/receive a message we had to call 'sparks. Now both these positions don't exist.
So does this ruling apply to only the new aircraft, or also to the ancient venerables? |

Applicable to all types.Provided Pilots have the requsite basic checks & No snags detected.
But finally its upto the Airline concerned.
Atleast We wont be using this availablity unless weather related diversion.

Im guessing the implementation of this rule might be useful for the reason you mentioned Mel.
