Japanese authorities are investigating an incident on 6 January in which a Korean Air (KAL) Boeing 737-900 landed on a 30m (98ft)-wide taxiway rather than on a runway.

A KAL spokeswoman in Seoul confirms the 737-900 landed on the 30m-wide taxiway, parallel to the runway, at Akita airport in the north of Japan’s main island.

It was a scheduled flight from Seoul Incheon to Akita and it was “raining at the time”, says the spokeswoman for the SkyTeam alliance carrier, who is unable to confirm the accuracy of Japanese news reports that quote the aircraft’s captain as admitting the incident was due to pilot error.

There was no damage to the aircraft and no injuries to the 124 passengers and eight crew on board, says the spokeswoman, adding that the Japanese authorities are now investigating.

She says the Japanese authorities took the pilots in for questioning after the aircraft landed at 12:30 on 6 January.

This meant passengers scheduled to board the Akita-Seoul Incheon flight later that same day were instead taken to Tokyo’s Haneda airport and caught KAL’s shuttle service to Seoul Gimpo, she adds

Can't recall the date but a JAL aircraft (DC-10?? or some McDouglas aircraft) landed accidently at Juhu aerodrome. Those days communication systems were not that developed. The pilot somehow managed to stop the aircraft but there almost seemed no way in taking it out of there.
Douglas and JAL officers worked at it and finally decided to take the aircraft off with minimum weight possible.
All the seats, galleys, barely everything that could add weight were removed. A minimum amount of fuel just sufficient for the aircraft to take off and land at Sahar airport was filled. Specialised pilots from the company did this task. The aircraft managed to take off still scratching its tail on the wall of the airport although but it was successful in its mission.
Finally all ended well.
Somebody please add the appropriate stats

dude!! no small issues here. All the more important as the plane belonged to SV. Bound to hit headlines if there is some substance in it.

The aircraft was written off. It did not take off from Juhu for Sahar.

In reduced visibility conditions (2,5 km) the aircraft landed at the small Juhu airfield instead of the international airport. The landing on runway 08 was continued and the aircraft overran across a ditch and broke apart. No fatalities among the 108 passengers and 14 crewmembers. Despite numerous expressions on behalf of the copilot who was concerned about the short runway, the captain continued the approach and landed.

Wow when was that ??? Any inquiry against the pilot?? I wonder hw u can be so dumb in nt identifying a taxiway and a runway?? Comments from the pilots in the forum if any required here...

This thing reminds me of one incident when one of the hijacked IC aircraft was about to land at the motorway in Lahore thinking that was a runway . dnt ask me wen was this becoz its only this part which i remember Very Happy

VABBy you are referring to IC 814. The reason pilot tried to land on the highway was because Lahore airport lights had been switched off to prevent the a/c from landing, but the the pilot had to land somehow as the plane was out of fuel completely so he tried to land on a road. He was fully aware that it was a road.

Cheers

Any pilot can land on a runway, landing on a taxiway... now thats a challenge.

A bit of correction needed here. This is from within the company. The Capt. was not told that the rwy lights were out out. He was just denied landing because just some time ago a bloody war at Kargil was fought. But the pilot mistook the highway for the rwy... when very low about 300+ feet above he noticed cars and they immediately pulled up. The finally when the tower learned what happened they got the aircraft land at the airport, refuel and take off without offloading any of the injured pax. Had they taken the rescue pax to the hospital the only man who died could have survived.
