Hello spotting fraternity:
We have had some good and memorable times, but then i think there is need for regulation now.
I have come across that spotters are getting girls [members of the opposite sex] at the spotting place at Jari Mari during the night sessions.
I wish to ask both, how sane and sensible is this decision to take members of the opposite sex during wee hours.
By doing so, I must also mention that are we not risking respect by a group of locals and jeopardising the entire community of spotters.
If we are plane spotters, since when have we started entertaining the opposite sex by such escapades?
Are we planning to take a one to one with the law at that time of the night?
Is Jari Mari.....Another Carter Road or Band Stand in the making.
Please let me have your views, members _________________ Dictum meum pactum, "My word is my bond". |

i might even consider ferrying a "friendly" hawaldar along for company, "just in case" the culprits unwittingly POP OUT of their holes !!! |

Your reaction sounds very contradictory to what a leading spotter mentioned with names et all.
I am not concerned with the personal aspect of this episode.
I am just inviting discussion on the dastardly implications that can have on the spotting fraternity as a whole. _________________ Dictum meum pactum, "My word is my bond".

I have a strong hunch , it's a local who has unwittingly gotten mistaken for a plane-spotter!!!
Cos whenever i'm there , i see only PLANES, PLANES, AND MORE PLANES, .....OFCOURSE ....TRAILS, OWLS, PHANTOMS.ETC.
So , shekar , what do you mean by "instances"?

Yo Seannie, we might get to see some more 'birds' then we bargained for.
Oh jeez, the OWLS - hope to come accross editing that spotting expeditions pics soon &
will have the majestic Barn Owl's pic put up soon.
Until then happy 'spotting' - 'to all'

Knock it off boys, we love the babes with the two huge engines (sometimes 3 and/or 4 and since the Antonov 225 Mriya dosent come to BOM cant say 6) and not........
End of story, i'd assume by now whoever that person is would learn to be a bit more sensible, you can bring anyone you like in the DAY time, leave the night to 2 : Seannster & Vishal Jolapara |

I fail to understand why would anybody do that unless Jari Mari is an extremely safe place. After all, you cannot do two kinds of spotting at the same time. _________________ [url=http://openflights.org/user/aseemsjohri]

Lets see.....
Any Aviation Enthusiast is welcome to spot.
The only problem I view is that in case of some Miscreants in the area taking advantage of the situation & the law enforcers getting in the picture & blocking access to the site.
But then couples frequenting the area may not be spotters too.So I don't think anyone can be stopped from visiting the area at any time. Its for the folks doing that to be responsible for their actions.

Not only worried about the girls here It's the after effects that would have on the entire spotting fraternity or should i say other members who spot there, that i am worried about.
We are plane spotters not spotters looking at other plains
The timing at which the certain member encourages and solicits such woman presence can be jeapordising to us and detrimental to our spotting.
Locals do not take this lightly.
@ Aseem
Yes, Nalini is right about the multitasking thing. The same member is a classic case of a bird in hand is worth two in the bush.
Coaxing one and cajoling one, all in the name of plane spotting and killing the golden goose of our location, worries me further. [Needless to say that it only for spotting].
@ Sean
I have a strong hunch , it's a local who has unwittingly gotten mistaken for a plane-spotter!!!
Unless locals are up at those wee hours, armed with a camera and looking at the planes with a girl in toe...............wonder which local it is
@ Mel

How right. I completely forgot about the miscreants......the safety of the girl in question has to be thought about too. _________________ Dictum meum pactum, "My word is my bond". |

Why don't you aggressively comb the shanties of all the locals for evidence? Let's not be presumptious that only "planespotters" carry cameras!!!
You'll be unpleasantly surprised , today i saw 2 locals with digital cameras in hand............so you see even the locals are catching up.......
Why not just sneak up one night for the heck of it ,and who knows you might be treated to a banquet of surprises!!!! |

Hmn.....i see that damage control exercises have begun.
What has plesantly surprised me is that members like you are putting up newer versions and adding more twists to try and salvage the entire issue.
Is it guilt or are we trying to protect someone
Do let me know if you wish me to be rather ruthless, & want me to disclose the person who engaged in such an act and yes, my credible source.
Also i would be happy to post my entire conversation details had with the said member for you to further authenticate and confirm if there were locals involved indeed
And since u mention even the locals are catching up.....Could it be that they did not want to miss spotting of another kind, because planes is what they see 24/7 and they are locals there or do they borrow digital cameras of spotters, whilst the latter are there _________________ Dictum meum pactum, "My word is my bond". |

I guess Every spotter would be responsible for his action.I believe this is hinting at one spotter.
But its a difficult solution regarding the others.Maybe befreinding the local police patrol in the area could help out but can also backfire & end this prime photo location.

I don't get it. There is nothing wrong in taking pictures from that spot and is perfectly legal. On what basis can the cops stop you, just have a chat with your local MLA or MP before hand to save any harassment from the cops. |

As you may be aware, the Indian government for some strange reason doesn't permit photography at most places, and Airports happen to be one such place! In a place like Mumbai, where terrorist fears always remain in the air - the situation could become very bad if you are caught by a cop (of course the matter can be settled by parting with a couple of hundred rupee notes!)
The government is very scared of the common man, at the same time terrorists have free access to all vital points _________________ Regards,

Nobody is contending the fact that there is something wrong in taking pictures.
We are worried that the said member is using photography as a ruse to give wings to his fantasies. The idea itself of taking a girl to the spotting place in those hours of the night would jeapordise the idea of spotting for others as a whole, unless that is what is intended intentionally.
Actually look at it this way.......how do you explain the cops that you are with a girl at that hour to click pictures of an aircraft. _________________ Dictum meum pactum, "My word is my bond". |

Even the girl issue, if girl is genuinely interested in spotting, I don't see a problem. I don't think they can charge you if you are on the right side of the law, girl or boy shouldn't matter. Afterall, this is India and not pakistan |

You have a point but then again its India... a cop may or may not believe that a girl likes planes! it all depends on the mentality of the cop... so it defers from cop to cop.... _________________ Flying High.... You and Me...! |

accepting the fact that we are not that an open society, I and even more so a cop would find it unusual to find a girl at wee hours present at that kind of a location. Being at a decent restaurant at that time of the hour is a different thing. _________________ [url=http://openflights.org/user/aseemsjohri]

well this is not done .. If I want to spot there at night, no one should stop me as long as Iam only spotting there.
But yes practically going there alone at wee hours is not a good idea. If only i can get a troupe of frnds with me , I dont think anything can stop us |

Spot 24*7 all the 365 days and there are no issues.
Even girls coming to spot is no issues at all. It is the timing i am concerned about.
It is the local resistance that will build up after a recent incident wherein the concerned member drew local attention by his most reticent excapades and fantacies, which were well apart from plane spotting
Let us not forget, Jari Mari is a chawl based illegal encroachment hutment dwelling of a certain group. If it comes to respect, then we have another issue which is sticking its head out. _________________ Dictum meum pactum, "My word is my bond". |

I was speaking with Rafique (who stay in the house - to our back from where we spot) 2/3 days ago in the afternoon & he didnt say anything about it nor did any of the other loocals otherwise since they know me Sean & Yash well they would generally come up & chat with us saying, 'saab kal airport waale aye tha area maapne' or 'kal ek do jan bada doorbin/camera le ke aaye they' & so on.....
But anyways, i dont think any girl would like to come in such a dingy-lit place (at night that is), with all the surrounding filth which leads up to the place as well as the locality unless its someone who genuinely like aviation or else i'm really surprised.
I took Mom there a few months ago, as she wanted to she asto what the hell was it that i was so interested in every weekend & so on.....& after her initial inhibitions she too was quite excited on witnessing the sights........strangely enough she hasnt come spotting since |

Well, since you suggest, i think then we must wait for some more local intervention on the said members actions.
Contrary to what i hear, the locals are planning to rough up the said member next time on his visit.
I was even updated that the said members indulgence during a time in the evening was so personal that people there around and even the ones below were spotting his act for a change
Well which girl would go there at that hour is suggestive that the said member took her there, cos only he knew of the isolated nature of the venue.
And how sweet of you to take ur mom for spotting and making the spotters gang a more stronger. _________________ Dictum meum pactum, "My word is my bond". |

That's why I said it is better to have a backup of a politician even a chotta politician should be ok, so that he would ring up the SI or whoever if they give you trouble.
But if somebody is involved with any activities(getting physical with a girl in public etc ) is inviting trouble not just from cops but also locals and would not be easy getting of the hook. Be sure that the spotters behave decently and get the respect of the locals. |

Crux is leave spotting places to just plane spotting.

Members,
If i wish to take girls who are into planespotting to VAMC at night i will do so, i don't need anyone's permission or approval or "blessings".
I know that we r in total control of the situation and thats all that matters!!!
Btw, there are 3 girls from my college who r seriously into planespotting and r literally BEGGING of me to take them there at night so that they can give vent to their built up mental state over the past 2 months!!!
I am in a quandary especially after what has happened and the afterevents.
Should i take a cop along just incase things go awry ? Or should I call their brothers too for added "insurance".
Any intelligent suggestions from fellow members will be acknowledged and put to use on the double!!!

Take 30. Just ensure it's for plane spotting.
Wonder if you are total control of the situation why would things go awry if you are just spotting planes
Don't worry about cops, they may well be on the lookout for anything stupid going on there. _________________ Dictum meum pactum, "My word is my bond".

Is it so hard to grapple with girls who r more passionate than us? |

There's nothing wrong with what you say ideally. But be prepared if a gang of goondas happen to beat you up and take away the girls or an over zealous cop happen to charge you with immoral trafficking.
If you can tackle such situations, then there should be no problem whether it is day or night or boy or girl.
I'm sure if you have some high up contacts or rapport with the nearby cops it can be tackled. But if somone wants to indulge in something "more" than spotting, a private place is more suitable.
If you look at my picture in on of the above posts, it is one of those kind of places just before the runway disclaimer: I've not been there yet LOL! |
