More action in the Gulf. Saudi’s LCC Sama is looking at a $500 mln leasing plan and getting upto 35 Boeing 737s by 2010. Sama last month won Saudi Arabia’s second domestic passenger airline licence, ending the monopoly of state-owned Saudi Arabian Airlines.
This is in UNI.
Sama, which operates from Dammam, plans to operate in a big way to the Indian subcontinent eventually.
The Saudi government has also awarded a licence to National Air Services (NAS), which plans to create a low-cost carrier based in the capital, Riyadh, with an initial fleet of five planes. NAS says it has a $2 billion aircraft purchase order from Airbus, Gulfstream and Raytheon and is looking at 22 and then 37 domewstic destinations in Saudi.
Saudi Arabian Airlines has reacted saying it will step up fleet purchase and is looking at Boeing and Airbus.
Looks like India is going to get attacked by the Gulf carriers in a huge way.
