IndiGo to damp lease five Qatar B737 MAX 8s
06FEB2024

IndiGo Airlines is preparing to damp lease five B737-8s from Qatar Airways, according to multiple Indian media reports. The Indian LCC is taking the step because 75 of its A320neo types remain grounded due to Pratt & Whitney engine issues.

India's Economic Times provides the most detail. That report says IndiGo will take five B737-8s from Qatar Airways on six-month damp lease terms over the upcoming IATA summer season. Qatar Airways will provide the aircraft, pilots, and maintenance, while IndiGo will provide the cabin crews. The aircraft will fly on the India - Qatar country pair.

Neither IndiGo Airlines nor Qatar Airways responded to a request for comment.

The newspaper reports that IndiGo pursued damp and wet lease options due to the shortage of young narrowbody aircraft available for dry leases for short time periods. The airline was also reportedly reluctant to lease older aircraft and risk maintenance issues, which could impact reliability.

IndiGo continues to talk with existing lessors about extending leases on current aircraft due to return. Historically, the airline has returned aircraft after six years. They are now attempting to hold onto many of them for longer until Pratt & Whitney resolves its engine and supply chain issues.

IndiGo Airlines to lease up to 20 aircraft - report

26FEB2024

IndiGo Airlines (6E, Delhi International) is looking to dry-lease about 12 aircraft from the secondary market and wet-lease up to eight airframes to address the grounding of several A320-200N and A321-200NX due to the Pratt & Whitney engine issues, according to a report from Money Control.

The Indian LCC is in talks with multiple leasing companies and carriers to add to its fleet before the summer schedule and is set to be in the final stage of negotiations with Qatar Airways (QR, Doha Hamad International) for five aircraft and Ryanair (FR, Dublin International) for three. The proposed deal with the Qatari airline was also reported earlier this month, albeit as a damp lease covering five B737-8s.

"We are continuously in the process of evaluating options available. As a policy, we do not comment on speculations and will share any information as and when we have anything to share," IndiGo Airlines told ch-aviation. Qatar Airways and Ryanair were not immediately available for comment.

The ch-aviation fleets module shows that IndiGo wet-leases 12 aircraft, including two B777-300ERs from Turkish Airlines, and ten A320-200s from SmartLynx Airlines and SmartLynx Airlines Estonia, with five apiece. The Indian carrier’s fleet comprises 350 in-house planes, including twenty A320-200s, 188 A320-200Ns, three A321-200(P2F)s, ninety-four A321-200NX, and forty-five ATR72-600s. Currently, forty-five A320-200Ns and fifteen A321-200NX are grounded. It does not and never has operated any in-house Boeing aircraft.

If confirmed, it would be the first such ACMI contract for Ryanair, an LCC which does not serve India and has been vocal about not having enough aircraft for its own operations due to Boeing delivery delays. The carrier operates B737-800s and B737-8-200s, except for its Maltese subsidiary, Lauda Europe (LW, Malta International), which operates twenty-eight A320-200s.

IndiGo Airlines mulling A350 order - reports

27MAR2024

IndiGo Airlines is looking at the possibility of placing an order with Airbus for up to thirty A350s, according to a Bloomberg News report.

The Indian LCC does not currently operate any widebodies, only wet-leasing two B777-300ERs from Turkish Airlines.

ch-aviation has asked IndiGo Airlines for comment. It declined to comment.

The ch-aviation fleets module shows that IndiGo Airlines’ fleet comprises 354 in-house aircraft - twenty A320-200s, 192 A320-200Ns, three A321-200(P2F)s, ninety-four A321-200NX, and forty-five ATR72-600s. It also wet-leases eleven A320ceo, six from SmartLynx Airlines (6Y, Riga) and five from SmartLynx Airlines Estonia (MYX, Tallinn Lennart Meri).

The carrier has a massive pending order with Airbus, totalling 940 future narrowbody airframes to be delivered. However, it has toyed with the idea of opening long-haul services, including destinations such as Amsterdam Schiphol and the United Kingdom. While the airline expects to add sixty-nine A321-200NY(XLR)s, some routes could not be directly served even with these jets, thus the need for widebodies.

IndiGo’s wet-leased B777-300ERs currently fly between Istanbul Airport and both Delhi International and Mumbai International, the ch-aviation schedules module shows.

https://www.ch-aviation.com/news/139655-indigo-airlines-orders-3070-a350-900s

IndiGo orders 30+70 A350-900s

25APR2024

IndiGo has placed its first widebody order, covering thirty A350-900s coming directly from Airbus with a further 70 purchase rights.

The widebodies will start delivering to the Indian low-cost carrier in 2027. IndiGo Airlines said the exact configuration would be determined at a later stage.

Despite long-standing speculation about its widebody ambitions and the ongoing long-term damp lease of two B777-300(ER)s from Turkish Airlines, IndiGo Airlines has thus far focused on growing its in-house narrowbody and regional fleet.

The carrier currently operates twenty A320-200s, 192 A320-200Ns, ninety-four A321-200NX, and forty-five ATR72-600s, as well as three A321-200(P2F)s. It has unfilled orders for 273 A320-200Ns, 608 A321-200NX, sixty-nine A321-200NY(XLR)s (expected to enter into service in 2025), and five ATR72-600s. Its 2023 order for 500 A320neo aircraft was the largest-ever commitment in terms of the number of aircraft.

IndiGo also wet-leases thirteen A320-200s from SmartLynx Airlines/SmartLynx Airlines Estonia/SmartLynx Airlines Malta and will damp-lease five B737-8s from Qatar Airways due to the ongoing Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engine issues. The ch-aviation fleets module shows that fifty A320neo and fourteen A321neo are inactive.
