IndiGo Airlines orders 500 A320neo Family aircraft

19.06.2023

IndiGo Airlines has placed a new order for 500 A320neo Family jets, breaking the record for the world's largest single ever commitment in terms of the number of aircraft.

"It is difficult to overstate the significance of IndiGo's new historic order for 500 Airbus A320 Family aircraft. An order book now of almost 1,000 aircraft well into the next decade, enables IndiGo to fulfil its mission to continue to boost economic growth, social cohesion and mobility in India. At IndiGo, we take pride in being India's preferred airline for connectivity in and with India; and by doing so, being one of the leading airlines in the world," Chief Executive Pieter Elbers said during the 2023 Paris Air Show.

The deliveries of the newly ordered batch of aircraft are scheduled to begin in 2030 and continue through 2035.

IndiGo has yet to decide on the new order's exact split between variants while engine selection will be announced at a later point, too. Elbers added that an additional long-haul aircraft order could also be placed later during the Paris Air Show.

The Indian LCC is already the world's largest operator of the A320neo Family aircraft with 165 A320-200Ns and eighty-five A321-200NX in its fleet. The ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows, excluding this new order, Indigo has a further 174 A320-200Ns, 236 A321-200NX, and sixty-nine A321-200NY(XLR)s due from Airbus.

IndiGo's fleet also comprises twenty-one A320-200s, thirty-nine ATR72-600s, and two A321-200(P2F)s.

Indigo is wet leasing 77W aircraft from TK. It is as if TK is operating the flight to circumvent the bilateral limits. But as long as it is a Indigo flight number and profits go to Indigo for doing almost nothing, I guess there is no violation of the bilaterals.

An example below:

Return
Fri, Jul 14
333 kg CO2
Avg emissions
$633
round trip
8:30 PM Istanbul Airport (IST)
Travel time: 6 hr Overnight
5:00 AM+1 Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL)
IndiGo Economy Boeing 777 6E 12
Plane and crew by Turkish Airlines Ticket also sold by Turkish Airlines

https://www.ch-aviation.com/portal/news/130787-indias-indigo-leaning-towards-b787s-report

IndiGo leaning towards B787s

17.08.2023

IndiGo Airlines is leaning towards the B787 as it narrows down options for a widebody order, according to a Reuters report. Boeing is reportedly ahead in the race to ink the order for around 25 aircraft, with IndiGo preferring the B787 product over the alternative A330-900N offering.

If correct, the decision would break with IndiGo's normal fleet acquisition strategy. Except for two B777-300ERs wet-leased from Turkish Airlines, the airline has exclusively operated Airbus narrowbodies and ATR72-600s. However, IndiGo is building up its network, especially its international network, recently launching flights to new markets in Africa, West Asia and Southeast Asia. IndiGo aims to double its capacity by the end of the decade.

IndiGo Airlines board approves purchase of 10 additional A320 NEO aircraft from Airbus

04 Sep 2023

IndiGo Airlines board of directors have approved an additional purchase of 10 A320 NEO family aircraft from French aircraft maker Airbus. The order for ten more aircrafts adds to the already placed order for 300 aircraft, as per the company filing.

IndiGo in 2019 had placed a record order of over 300 Airbus A320 NEO family aircraft worth around $33 billion at notional catalogue prices with France's Airbus. Notably, the delay in delivery of the A320 NEO family aircraft has been due to issues with Pratt & Whitney (P&W) engines.

IndiGo Airlines' latest approved additional order, places A320NEO, A321NEO and A321XLR aircraft in the log book.

IndiGo operates over 300 aircraft and has previous orders totalling 480 aircraft which are yet to be delivered by the end of this decade. With the additional firm order of 500 aircraft for 2030-2035, IndiGo’s order-book has almost 1000 aircraft yet to be delivered well into the next decade.

Commenting on this order, IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers said, “It is difficult to overstate the significance of IndiGo’s new historic order for 500 Airbus A320 Family aircraft. An orderbook now of almost 1.000 aircraft well into the next decade, enables IndiGo to fulfill its mission to continue to boost economic growth, social cohesion and mobility in India".

IndiGo eyes Amsterdam with A321neo(XLR)s

08.09.2023

IndiGo Airlines is mulling services to Amsterdam Schiphol if the incoming A321-200NY(XLR)s can cover the distance in a single flight, according to CEO Pieter Elbers.

Speaking to the Elsevier Weekblad (EW) outlet, Elbers said he wanted to expand existing international codeshare arrangements, including with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KL, Amsterdam Schiphol). "At a certain point, we have to start thinking about ourselves." The CEO expects the first of sixty-nine A321neo(XLR)s to start arriving in 2025. With a claimed maximum range of 8,700 kilometres, it puts Western European destinations within range of some Indian cities.

"Rome Fiumicino is perfectly feasible from India. Mumbai International - Amsterdam is just not possible. Depending on the final specifications, the XLR will reach Amsterdam from Delhi," he said.

According to the ch-aviation schedules module, KLM and Air India (AI, Mumbai International) already fly on the Delhi - Amsterdam city pair using B787-8s and B787-9s. An existing codeshare arrangement with KLM also sees IndiGo pass passengers back and forth at Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore International. Elbers did not say how or whether his possible flights to Amsterdam, which remain far from a sure thing, would impact that codeshare relationship.

IndiGo is India's largest domestic airline but its market share on routes in and out of India is only around 16%, something Elbers is keen to increase. The airline has recently launched flights to new markets in Africa, West Asia and Southeast Asia, and aims to double its international capacity by the end of the decade. The low-cost carrier is also rapidly scaling up its fleet. In June, the airline ordered 500 Airbus A320 family aircraft, extending their aircraft delivery pipeline into the next decade. The A321neo(XLR)s come from an earlier order for three hundred A320N family aircraft signed for in late 2019.

Since the June order, IndiGo has recently added ten additional A320-200Ns to the 2019 order and ch-aviation has also reported that the airline is close to a final decision about an order for 25 widebodies. In a break with their tradition of taking Airbus aircraft, IndiGo is reportedly leaning towards the B787.

https://www.ch-aviation.com/portal/news/131977-indias-indigo-turns-to-secondary-lease-market-for-a320ceo

IndiGo turns to secondary lease market for A320ceo

15.09.2023

IndiGo Airlines is looking to lease twenty-two A320-type aircraft on the secondary market to counter an expected increase in the number of grounded aircraft due to the evolving Pratt & Whitney engine issues.

India-based outlets report that plans are well developed, with the first aircraft expected as soon as November. Of the 22 planes, ten will come under wet leases, as previously reported by ch-aviation, initially for six months, while the remainder will come on dry leases. The low-cost carrier is scouting for A320-200s fitted with International Aero Engines (IAE) manufactured V2500 engines. While V2500 engines are older and less fuel efficient than the Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan engines, those disadvantages are more than offset by the reliability the IAE engines provides.

"The intention is to look for non-Pratt & Whitney aircraft, but getting A320Ns may be difficult as the supply system is already choked," a source close to negotiations told India's Economic Times. "We may have to settle for the A320ceo to maintain capacity in the immediate term."

Indigo currently operates twenty A320-200s, all powered by the V2500 engine, but this number comprises just over 6% of the carrier's current fleet, which is mainly made up of A320-200Ns and A321-200NX. Twenty-five of IndiGo's 192 A321-200NX are fitted with the PW1100 geared turbofan (GTF) engines now subjected to accelerated inspections after a contaminate was found in the metal used in the engine's turbine blades, while 114 of the carrier's 172 A320-200Ns are also impacted. Around 45 of these aircraft are already grounded awaiting inspection or new engines.

Earlier this week, RTX Corporation, the parent entity of Pratt & Whitney, ramped up the number of engines it needed to inspect. When they first disclosed the problem in late July, the estimated figure was approximately 1,200 engines. That number has now increased to around 3,000. IndiGo, which has said it wants to increase its capacity by 25% by the end of the first half of 2024, is one of the world's biggest users of the problem-plagued Pratt & Whitney engines.

"We are in receipt of the recent information from Pratt & Whitney regarding the outcome of the latest engine inspection," says an IndiGo spokesperson. "We continue to work closely with Pratt & Whitney to assess the potential impact to our fleet and implement mitigation measures as required."

https://www.ch-aviation.com/portal/news/134554-indias-indigo-mulls-business-class-on-some-a321neo-report

IndiGo mulls business class on some A321neo - report

29.11.2023

IndiGo Airlines may venture away from its low-cost carrier roots and start installing business-class cabins in some of its A321neo aircraft. The Economic Times has reported that the airline plans to put 16 such seats into each of 35 aircraft by the end of 2024.

“Four rows of extra-legroom seating will be installed in those aircraft, providing 36 inches of legroom for guests to stretch out or work comfortably," a source told the outlet.

If correct, the move would be a departure from IndiGo's successful operating model, which has seen it become India's biggest airline. However, the newspaper also suggested that the move could be a response to the overhaul of Air India and a broader trend towards more premium travel in India.

“The airline believes that there is a section of high-end leisure travellers and small business owners looking for a business-class product at fares lower than those charged by legacy airlines," the source claimed.

IndiGo did not respond to ch-aviation's request for comment.

According to ch-aviation fleets advanced data, IndiGo's existing 342-strong fleet is now dominated by A320 and A320N types, but it is also operating ninety-four A321-200NXs. It also has 942 aircraft on order, including 677 A321neo types, specifically 384 A321-200Ns, 224 A321-200NX, and sixty-nine A321-200NY(XLR)s.

The newspaper's source did not say exactly which kind of A321neo the carrier was considering installing the business seats on. However, the long-range A321-200NY(XLR)s will target markets in Europe and elsewhere with flying times of seven hours plus and are possible contenders. Airbus will start their first deliveries of the type to IndiGo in 2025.
