Akasa Air plans int’l flights, second order by YE23

28.03.2023

Akasa Air is looking to launch its first international operations by the end of 2023 and is evaluating Singapore Changi, the Gulf region, and the Middle East naming Dammam, Doha International, and Muscat as possible destinations, the carrier’s executives have revealed in recent days. Also by the end of this year, it expects to place the “three-digit aircraft order” it has previously hinted at.

The airline launched flight operations in August 2022 and already it operates a fleet of nineteen B737-8s. Under India’s civil aviation laws, an airline can begin international operations with a fleet of 20 or more aircraft. The 20th should arrive in April with another eight in the next financial year, to make 28 by the end of March 2024.

Akasa Air’s chief commercial officer, Praveen Iyer, told the business daily Mint last week that the airline was considering the above destinations as candidates for its upcoming international launch.

“On March 15, we initiated the application process, that’s the first step, and now we will start the real work and decide where we could fly to given the constraints. We are looking to launch international flights by end of the year,” he said. “We see a few markets where we don’t see the capacity they should have. I can see Singapore and a couple of markets in the Middle East and the Gulf as well.”

However, CEO Vinay Dube stressed to the Business Standard newspaper that Akasa’s network planning will centre on metro-to-non-metro connectivity for the next one to two years, saying: “Our focus is going to be on connecting the metros with tier-2 and tier-3 cities. While we do some metro-to-metro flying, we have got a lot of metro-to-non-metro cities like Bangalore International-Vishakhapatnam, Bangalore-Bhubaneswar, Bangalore-Guwahati, and Bangalore-Kochi International.”

According to the ch-aviation capacities module, Akasa Air currently operates 20 routes - none of them with fewer than seven weekly frequencies - connecting 13 cities. Its other non-metro cities include Agartala, Lucknow, Goa Dabolim, Bagdogra, and Varanasi. In India, a metro city tends to be an area with a population of one million or more people.

“We will have our first international flight before the end of the year. We’re not constructing a hub. Even today’s Indian airlines don’t make a living off of this. So while we will build connections over time, we are not considering a hub concept. Many non-metros could also offer international flights,” Dube said.

On March 24, the chief executive told the Press Trust of India news agency that even though it will not be until early 2027 that the deliveries of all seventy-two Boeing aircraft Akasa Air has on order is expected to be completed, it will place an additional three-digit order by the end of this year. He declined to give an exact number.

“We are already flying 110 flights a day and will be at 150 flights per day by the end of the summer season. It will be continued growth but not growth for the sake of growth,” he said. “We have no market share targets, not chasing any position in aviation, and we have got a target to make customers happy, a target to make our employees happy. That is what we are doing and we can do that, that is sustainable if we have got a very strong cost structure.”

The airline plans to hire nearly 1,000 employees to take the total workforce to more than 3,000 by the end of March 2024, he added.

Akasa Air eyes Go First slots in southern states

21.06.2023

Akasa Air is keen to acquire slots held by Go First, saying even if that airline resumes flights, it will be on a smaller scale than before. Akasa wants to increase its flights to the Indian states of Karnataka, Kerala, Goa, and Maharashtra, and will "aggressively" bid for Go First slots at airports in those states, according to a MoneyControl report.

"The airline plans to increase the number of flights from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, and Kerala in the next six months to capitalise on the growing regional demand from these airports," an unnamed Akasa Air official told the outlet. "As part of its expansion plan, Akasa Air will be aggressively bidding for whatever slots become available in the coming times."

Specifically, Akasa Air is targeting slots at Mumbai International, Pune, Goa Dabolim, Goa Mopa, Kochi International, Thiruvananthapuram, Mangalore, Bangalore International. While working through the insolvency process, Go First can hold onto its existing slots until March 2024 unless it is dissolved. However, if the airline does relaunch, it is expected to do so as a smaller carrier and may voluntarily surrender certain slots in time for the Northern Hemisphere 2023/24 winter season.

Meanwhile, Akasa Air continues to look for up to USD100 million in funding to pay for aircraft orders. It currently operates twenty B737-8s and has a further 52 on order. Akasa Air CEO Vinay Dube had floated the idea of another aircraft order later this year involving hundreds of planes. However, ongoing turbulence in the Indian aviation sector and the failure to yet lock in additional funding means the carrier may scale back any additional purchases. According to Bloomberg, Akasa Air is now looking to supplement its existing order with as few as ten extra aircraft, with efforts underway to close and announce the order during this week's Paris Air Show.

Akasa Air orders four B737 MAX 8s

21.06.2023

Akasa Air has ordered four incremental B737-8s from Boeing during the 2023 Paris Air Show.

"We are excited to add four more B737-8 airplanes into our fleet, taking our initial order of 72 aircraft up to 76 jets which will be delivered over the next four years. In addition to supporting our rapid domestic expansion, these airplanes allow us to take full advantage of the category-leading B737-8 aircraft with its unparalleled range, as we prepare our foray into international routes," Founder and Chief Executive Vinay Dube said.

The Indian low-cost carrier currently operates nineteen B737-8s, leased from Avolon, Griffin Global Asset Management, BBAM (five each), and Standard Chartered Aviation Finance (four). All of them were picked up as whitetails and are currently 3.9 years old on average, despite delivering to Akasa Air as their first operator in 2022-2023. The airline's order book for new aircraft from Boeing also includes fifty-three B737-8-200s. Until this new announcement, Akasa Air had no more standard -8s on order.

Akasa Air obtains international permit

22.09.2023

Akasa Air has secured authorisation to fly abroad, with India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation on September 20 designating it as an International Scheduled Operator, the budget carrier confirmed in a statement.

Chief executive Vinay Dube said that the new designation “enables us to take one step closer” to launching international operations before the end of this year. He added: “We are now working with all relevant authorities on our request for traffic rights and will soon be able to announce the international destinations we will fly to. We are targeting destinations within the range of a 737 MAX from India in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.”

He reiterated that Akasa Air is also preparing to announce “a three-digit aircraft order” by the end of the year “to serve the growing travel demand” in India. The carrier had already referred to such an order earlier this year alongside some specific examples of where it hopes to fly to internationally.

Akasa took delivery of its 20th aircraft, B737-8-200 VT-YAV (msn 63870), on August 1, becoming the first airline in Asia to add the 8-200 variant of the Boeing MAX to its fleet. Dube told ch-aviation in an interview at the time that it aimed to start international flights by the end of 2023. The fleet currently consists of nineteen B737-8s and one 8-200. Indian regulations require carriers to have at least 20 aircraft before venturing abroad. It also has 52 more of the -200s and four more of the original -8 model on order.

Akasa Air orders 150 B737 MAX

18JAN2024

Akasa Air (QP, Mumbai International) has ordered 150 B737 MAX from Boeing composed of an undisclosed number of B737-10s and B737-8-200s, it announced in a statement on January 18. This brings the airline's total order book to 226 aircraft.

The ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows that the carrier already operates twenty-one B737-8s and one B737-8-200. The new aircraft order, announced at WINGS India 2024, will provide Akasa Air with a steady delivery stream through 2032. Akasa launched operations in August 2022.

"These additions to our fleet will help us bolster the strength of our operations as we expand our footprint and foray into international skies in the very near future," said Vinay Dube, founder and chief executive of Akasa Air.

The LCC did not immediately respond to ch-aviation's request for comment regarding the exact variant split of the new order.

In 2021, the airline placed an initial order for seventy-two B737 MAX, which was followed up with an additional order for four B737-8s in June 2023.

As previously covered by ch-aviation, Akasa Air has been looking at a possible "three-digit" aircraft order for several months, covering deliveries for the 2027-2032 period.

The company is simultaneously eyeing the launch of international operations by the first quarter of 2024. It reached the 20-aircraft threshold set by the Indian civil aviation law for international ops when it took the twentieth aircraft on December 29, 2023. It has also obtained an international permit from the country's Ministry of Civil Aviation.

Akasa Air announces launch of international flights, to start Mumbai-Doha service from March 28

February 16, 2024

Akasa Air on Friday announced the launch of its international operations from March 28 with Doha as its first overseas destination. With the launch of this service, the fledgling carrier will become the first Indian airline to fly overseas in just 19 months since its inception.

“Starting 28 March 2024, Akasa Air will operate four non-stop flights a week, connecting Mumbai with Doha, enhancing air connectivity between Qatar and India. Bookings for flights are now open,” Akasa Air said in a statement.

Prior to 2016, Indian carriers became eligible to fly overseas after completing five years of domestic operations and having a minimum fleet size of 20 aircraft. In June that year, the government did away with the five-year requirement, making the 20-aircraft fleet size the only criteria to mount international flights.

Akasa Air received its 20th aircraft in August 2023, barely a year after it started commercial operations. The airline is initially eyeing high-traffic geographies like the Middle East and Southeast Asia for its international operations. Apart from Doha, Akasa Air has received government approvals to operate flights to Riyadh, Jeddah, Doha and Kuwait.
