Air Asia India completes transfer of A320 VT-ATJ aircraft to Air India Express as part of fleet merger

AIX Connect (formerly known as Air Asia India) this week completed the transfer of an A320 aircraft, the VT-ATJ, to Air India Express as part of the merger of the two airlines, Air India's CEO and MD Campbell Wilson told employees in a letter on October 6.

"VT-ATJ, at A320 originally from Air Asia India, became the first to transfer into the Air India Express fleet after completing DGCA’s detailed five-phase CAP3100 process," Wilson said.

He added that other aircraft will soon be transferred from the fleet of AIX Connect to Air India Express to ensure that the two low-cost carriers operate as one and the airline has full flexibility to deploy aircraft in the most optimal and efficient manner across its network.

Air India deploys B777 aircraft for all its US destinations

Air India has deployed its newly inducted B777 aircraft to all three US destinations it serves non-stop from Mumbai: New York JFK Airport, Newark Liberty Airport (New Jersey), and San Francisco, airline officials said on Friday.
This ensures that, for the first time, all North American cities served by Air India from Mumbai have been upgraded to aircraft with modern-generation seats and inflight entertainment systems in all classes, officials added.
In addition, one of the two daily Air India flights between Mumbai and London Heathrow (AI130/AI131) will now also operate on the new B777 aircraft offering modern generation interiors, as well as introducing First Class cabins.

The B777-200LR aircraft serving San Francisco and New York-JFK comes with 28 Business, 48 Premium Economy and 212 Economy Class seats, whilst the B777-300ER serving Newark-Liberty and London offers 8 First Class, 40 Business and 280 Economy Class seats.

Campbell Wilson, MD & CEO, Air India said, “We are delighted to now offer an elevated experience on all routes from Mumbai to the United States, and to upgrade one of our London services. This is part of the ongoing product transformation underway at Air India, with 7 new B777s inducted over the last year to be followed by 4 more, along with 6 new Airbus A350s, over the coming months. All of these aircraft feature much-improved interiors and pave the way for the full interior upgrade of our entire widebody fleet commencing in the middle of 2024.”

Bookings for the flights on the all-new product are available on all channels, officials said.

Air India completes title transfer of fourth A350 aircraft, says CEO

Air India has completed the title transfer of its fourth A350 aircraft, and it is scheduled to arrive in February 2024. The Tata Group-owned carrier expects the first A350-900 aircraft to arrive in India this month.

"On the aircraft front, we completed the title transfer of our fourth A350 aircraft last week, which is scheduled to arrive in February 2024 after livery changes and modifications.

"We also took delivery of another two A320 neos that will commence service in December," Air India CEO and MD Campbell Wilson said in his weekly message to the staff on Friday.

He also said a brand new A350 of Air India and B737 Max of Air India Express in their new liveries will be featured at the Wings India conference in Hyderabad in January.

The airline has ordered six A350-900 planes and five of them are scheduled for delivery through March 2024.

Apart from these, the airline's firm orders for 470 new aircraft include 34 A350-1000s, 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, 10 Boeing 777Xs, 140 A320 neos, 70 A321 neos and 190 Boeing 737MAXs.

Air India's first wide body Airbus A350-900 aircraft is set to arrive in the national capital on Saturday and initially, the plane will be operated in short haul routes, the airline's chief Campbell Wilson said on Friday. Air India, which plans to induct a total of six A350 planes in the first phase, will be the first Indian carrier to have this type of aircraft.

After many months of planning, the first aircraft A350-900 and the first to sport the airline's new livery and interior, will arrive in Delhi on Saturday, Wilson said.

Air India plans to start more ultra long haul flights, mainly to the US cities, as it expands the aircraft fleet with more A350s and B777s, according to sources. The Tata Group-owned airline, which is also in the process of consolidating its operations, including by the proposed merger of Vistara, is looking to launch direct flights from Indian cities to Seattle, Los Angeles and Dallas, the sources in the know said.
Currently, Air India is the sole Indian airline operating services to the US with flights to Washington, New York, Newark, San Francisco and Chicago.
The sources told PTI that Air India is planning to start flights to Seattle, Los Angeles and Dallas during the winter schedule of 2024-25.
While A350 is likely to be deployed for services to Seattle, B777 might be operated for flights to Los Angeles and Dallas.

These will be ultra long haul flights, which generally means that the duration is over 16 hours.
Air India spokesperson did not offer any comments on the plans.

Besides flights to the US cities, Air India is mulling all B777 operations to London Heathrow from both Delhi and Mumbai, once it inducts two more of such planes in its fleet.

At present, the flights to London are operated with B787 from Delhi and Mumbai.

According to the sources, the airline will commence flights to London Gatwick from Bengaluru next month with a Boeing Dreamliner.
