I don't know what is Pakistan's strategy here. Previously it was understood that the restrictions will be in place till the election results, which was May 23. But they are continuing to extend the restrictions causing AI and other airlines (especially TG and SQ) which fly Europe-SE Asia, losses.
Worst hit are UA's DEL ops. UA does not fly over Iran either so it has suspended operations now for about a month.

Internal PK stupidity - discord between hardliners and those in the PM's office. Pakistan has very few trump cards and a bankrupt government coffer right now. This is one of their few trump cards, and they'll thrash around until it causes enough damage. |

Add to it the overflight charges cash cow which they are missing out on, in the quest for showing some political muscle. The longer routes ate into UA's already razor-thin margins on the route, and for AI, we know that it will go into deeper debt. DL has been cautious, and announced the US-India route well in the future. AI are making some very practical route changes (Stockholm, Vienna, Mumbai).
Cheers, Sumantra. |

Good news for AI, SpiceJet, Indigo, United, Afghan airlines, Thai, Singapore and other air carriers. Pakistan is opening up its air space with immediate effect.
Now AI can remove the one stop service it had to US operations from DEL. United probably will lift its suspension to DEL and maybe BOM. Still not sure how the Iran airspace restrictions for US carriers will affect. Also DL is probably also relieved. |

BOM was more lucrative for UA than DEL. They sent their largest AC - 77W - to BOM and that baby was always full in J and PY. |
