BOM just shy of 50 million at 49,876,769
DEL just shy of 70 million at 69,866,994. Unlikely that this number will vault DEL to the top 10 busiest airports by pax traffic.
DEL saw about 16 million more domestic passengers than BOM. In fact, BOM has shown negative growth in domestic traffic over the last several months. And it saw about 4 million more international passengers than BOM.
Overall traffic growth in BOM was 5.7% over 2017. Growth at BOM was roughly the same as that seen in 2017.
Growth in DEL was 10.1%, lower than that seen in 2017 (14.1%).
By comparison, growth at BLR and HYD was well above 20%. |

Growth in BOM is negative may be due to capacity constraints, the same constraints are now creeping at DEL too. The sooner the Navi Mumbai airport starts operations for BOM, the better since there is no hope of runway expansion at BOM.
BLR and HYD are adding second runways which can increase aircraft movements, but terminal and aircraft parking capacity needs to be increased.
MAA and CCU have both some terminal and runway constraints, but still growth is between 10 to 15%. Also growth at AMD is 20%+ , with traffic being higher than Cochin for the period (April to Dec 2018). |

Perhaps. And those runway constraints manifest themselves during daylight hours when most domestic operations occur. Nevertheless, if there's healthy demand, I suspect airlines would put larger AC on certain trunk routes to feed that demand -- a 321 instead of a 320, or a 739 instead of a 738. I think BOM is losing its lustre as a city where corporates or manufacturing want to be based. The cost of living is too high, the infrastructural constraints damaging, and the local politics ugly. BLR and HYD, especially are seen as offering a far higher quality of life especially for young people. DEL will continue to grow in part because it's really the only game in town for Northern India. The South and West of India now offer numerous other alternatives to BOM. |

I won't be surprised if BLR gets more domestic passengers than BOM in 2020. |

I think the negative growth domestically is probably due to Jet and AI removing wide bodies from certain routes. I would be very surprised in BLR overtakes BOM in Dom pax (unless Indigo goes crazy and just starts a crazy number of new flights). While BLR is definitely growing faster than BOM (economy wise), BOM is still doing well as well. I would imagine up gauging happening at BOM. To be honest, if airfares increase a bit, it is probably not a bad thing. |

The gap between the two in domestic numbers has been narrowing dramatically. With a second runway getting opened in BLR this year and the additional capacity that Indigo is compelled to deploy, it won't be surprising at all. Indigo has just announced Srinagar, Bhopal and Imphal nonstops out of from BLR, I think its going to be raining new connections out of BLR |

Oh cool. I didn't;t realize Indigo had a connection hub strategy (verses a two stop flight). But great. BLR is a good place for a southern hub given the demand and they have workers from all over India there. |
