Air India retires its unique 10-wheel A320 Classic fleet

18 June 2019

Air India has retired the A320 Classic with India-specific ‘bogey’ wheels.

Like AI’s earlier half-man, half-horse centaur mascot, the aircraft made for a strange sight. The national carrier was the world’s only airline to operate the narrow body, single-aisle jets retrofitted with a heavy set of rear wheels — more common on wide-bodied aircraft — to combat short, illmaintained runways, especially in smaller cities.

The last operational A320-321 Classic with AI (VT-ESL) operated its last flight from Delhi to Mumbai on Sunday, ending an era that began in the late 1980s with the debut of flyby-wire planes. The jet had flown 61,600 hours and completed 38,000 landings. Indian Airlines, as the domestic branch of AI was then known as, had a fleet of 31 A320 Classics with bogey wheels.

The traditional wheel assembly was two nose wheels and four undercarriage ones.AI chose an eight-wheel ‘bogey’ undercarriage. “Indian Airlines (then) had planned to land these aircraft on short, poorly maintained runways in smaller towns in the north and Northeast and so we went for the extra wheels, said a senior AI official.

“The bogey wheels, with its two sets of four-wheel assembly, distributed the weight of the aircraft over a larger surface area to lower the impact on the runway during touchdown,” explained Capt Mohan Ranganathan, an air safety expert who had worked with Indian Airlines.

Before the A320-321 debuted, aircraft of the 80s had conventional mechanical flight controls. This series brought in planes where man and the machine had a computerised interface. “Airbus had sold the A320 as an aircraft that can never crash. Its computer had so many protective systems that even a rookie pilot could fly it safely, they had claimed,” said Capt Ranganathan.

But only a year after induction, on 14 February, 1990, an A320-231 (VT-EPN) crashed in Bangalore during landing, killing 92 of the 146 onboard. “There was utter disbelief. In March, then civil aviation minister Arif Mohammed Khan ordered the grounding of the 14 A320 aircraft. Over a year later, they came back to play a starring role in the 1990 airlift of Indians from Kuwait,” said the AI official.

The airline is retiring the planes, but not getting rid of them. “We loved this aircraft with its unique bogey wheels. Even in its retirement, it will be maintained for on-job training,” said an AI senior engineer. The last ‘bogey wheel’ plane will be kept in the Mumbai hangar. “It will be used to provide on-job training on ‘live aircraft’ to our own and third-party engineers,” said the official, adding that bases in Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram, too, have an A320 Classic each for training.

The unusual plane was loved by aviation enthusiasts, but pilots hated its poor weather radar and other age-related maladies. “Because of the bogey wheels, the aircraft was a fuel guzzler,” said a pilot who had flown the aircraft.

Looks like Air India are starting non-stop flights from Kolkata to Dubai

AI917 CCU DXB 1450 1855 A20N Su/Tu/Th/Fr
AI918 DXB CCU 1855 0100+1 A20N Th/Sa
AI918 DXB CCU 2010 0215+1 A20N Mo/We

Might be wrong, I just looked it up on Google Flights for a week in August, so some changes are possible.

This rotation is aligned with the newly launched IDR-DXB-IDR flights.
AI918 starts on July 15
AI917 starts on July 16

Thanks to Abhijeeth for the tip!

Air India Express is gearing for its own international growth. The CEO of Air India's low-cost subsidiary, K Shyam Sundar, told The Times of India this past weekend that its board had recently approved a proposal to induct 11 more aircraft on a dry-lease basis given stronger than expected demand.

"The matter has been referred to the (aviation) ministry for government clearance in view of the prevailing circumstances (hinting at the proposed divestment)," he said.

"We have already drawn up a viable plan of operations for the proposed fleet expansion. There has been tremendous growth in AI Express’ load factor and revenues in the current fiscal. At the current rate, the airline’s turnover should go well past INR50 billion (USD719 million) in FY 19-20 against budgeted figure of INR47 billion (USD675.9 million). Revenue in FY 2018-19 was just a little over INR42 billion (USD604 million),” he added.

Air India flight in emergency landing at London Stansted after bomb threat

June 27, 2019

Air India said one of its planes landed at London Stansted Airport on Thursday following a bomb threat.

The airline said the affected plane, flight AI 191 from the Indian city of Mumbai to Newark Airport in the United States, "made a precautionary landing" in the United Kingdom due to the incident.

Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon fighter jets scrambled to intercept the plane, and escorted it to the airport.

Several residents in Derby, a city 128 miles north of London, reported hearing a loud bang around 10 a.m. local time (5 a.m. ET), which has since been linked to the sonic boom of the fighter jets.

"The Typhoon aircraft were authorized to transit at supersonic speed for operational reasons; any inconvenience caused to local residents is regretted," a RAF spokesperson told CNN in a statement.

There were conflicting reports on the time the flight was diverted.

Essex Police said the plane was diverted at around 9.50 a.m., while London Stansted Airport said the diversion happened at 10.15 a.m.
"It is parked on an isolated stand away from the normal airport operations," the airport said in a statement posted on Twitter.

The airport said its runway had reopened and was fully operational after the "precautionary landing."

"We are sorry for any disruption caused by the incident and would like to thank you for your patience," the airport said on Twitter.
Air India said it will provide updates on the situation.

So Air India is leaving Osaka after serving that city for many decades. May be they should look at nonstop service since there is no competition on that route (JL and ANA fly to Tokyo).

I am not that sure about this. I am not sure about the yields (I have anecdotal evidence of numbers: I have taken this flight a few times). If the yields are not nice in today's climate, this station is not worth it. Second, AI is grappling with a few wide-body frames in Mx, not to mention issues with a few narrow-body frames as well. This may actually be a good practical move from AI. JL and NH are extremely well-managed airlines, and there must be a good reason as to why they do not try for a direct KIX-India connection. They do very well on the NRT-India route, which also keeps AI from increasing its frequency on that route.
Cheers, Sumantra.

Is most traffic on JL/NH O&D? Or is it mostly transit traffic to North America?

Sanjay: as I had written, I have only anecdotal evidence. Additionally, from what I have heard (and seen as well),JL/NH cater to a huge amount of J (and Y+) traffic on the India-Narita route with Japanese companies: this is one of the places where AI takes a hit. They also do fairly well on the cargo front. NH had the two B737-700ERs on with one in purely all-J configuration, and another J and Y+. This type was used on the BOM-NRT route till they were retired in 2016. I have also seen the cheap-fare Economy North America-connecting traffic: in most cases, I have seen more O&D than these types, though. The business + official traffic is possibly very strong, plus both JL and NH give very good intra-Japan connections. NH also code-shares out of NRT with Ibex for those unique NRT domestic flights.
Cheers, Sumantra.

Makes sense. Japanese customers (especially premium customers) like their own carriers, for reasons of language, culture, and food. AI used to have Japanese FAs on their Japan flights back in the day who could cater to the needs of Japanese pax, but I don't know if they do anymore.

I have no stats so I defer to anyone else who knows - wrt to Osaka. I feel that this route is more based on history than actual need today. I am willing to bet that the bulk of the traffic was flying HKG-OSK rather than OSK-India. It was being used by AI to have a red eye flight into HKG and then evening flight back to DEL (to cater to business people). Osaka used to be where a lot of textile traders went to buy sari and other cloths way back in the day. One of my distant relatives had a really nice business based in Osaka area. But times change, China came a long and Dubai (and even India) are probably easier places to do this type of business. But again this is based on family stories rather than real stats of traffic flows.

Absolutely correct, Sanjay: yes, AI of the yore had Japanese FAs. In AI's dark days, plus even in the `revival' period (if one can term it so!), there were no Japanese FAs. However on one recent flight (AI 306 DEL-NRT), I have seen a lady making Japanese language announcements: for all I know, she could be from North Eastern India as well, who has learnt the Japanese language well. I have heard live announcements in French on the AI 143 DEL-CDG route: this was an Indian lady. Even if AI currently has foreign FAs, they would be extremely miniscule in number. AI's sloppy reputation does not make it very attractive for foreign cabin crew.
More on the point in question: JL/NH have an almost clear stronghold on the business traffic between Japan-India. They have good corporate deals from what I know, and JL/NH earn a good amount from the business traffic in J/Y+: really good enough to make them offer discounted Y tickets at times.
My personal experience on the route: I haven't flown JL, but I have flown both NH and AI quite a few times, and yes, all in Y. AI has a very competitive Y product: the hard product (the Dream)liners), comparable baggage allowance, good leg room, good service, and superb food. The IFE compares well on NH and AI: it is so-so in both cases. NH's food offerings are quite clueless in Y.
However, they must be doing really well on the food part in J and Y+ in addition to other plus points, due to which the business crowd makes a beeline for them (in addition to the almost monopoly on corporate deals which JL/NH have, as compared to AI). In the current situation, JL/NH beat AI hollow on the yields, the cargo, and the passenger volume, and I do not see the situation changing in any way.
Another interesting fact is NH code-sharing with other South East Asian *A partners TG/SQ-SilkAir on the India routes, and having the more attractive Indian FSC Vistara on a few domestic Indian routes, and not AI. And perhaps, justifiably so.
Cheers, Sumantra.

This is quite interesting, and yes, there is quite a bit of a Gujarati crowd in the Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe region.

The A321 was being towed from ramp area to NEC hangar. In the process, the A321’s rudder hit right side wing tip of AI’s B777 that was parked outside the hangar.

As a result of collision, rudder of VT-PPB and wing tip navigation light of VT-ALN is damaged.

Air India plans to reactivate 17 aircraft, which have been grounded for "a prolonged period", by the end of October, CEO Ashwani Lohani told PTI newswire.

The first eight inactive aircraft, which include four A320 Family jets, one B747-400, one B777-300(ER), and two B787-8s, will return to revenue service by the end of August. The reactivation of the remaining nine aircraft is subject to Air India receiving additional funds for maintenance.

"We are aiming for revenue maximisation. Therefore, we plan to put the retrieved aircraft back into operation as soon as possible," Lohani said.

The Indian flag carrier is planning to use the aircraft, among others, to launch new routes from Mumbai Int'l to Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta (due to start on September 27) and from Delhi Int'l via Chennai to Denpasar (October 27).

According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, Air India's currently grounded fleet includes five A319-100s, six A321-200s, two B747-400s, three B777-300(ER)s (of which two are due to be reconfigured as VIP transports), and two B787-8s.

The carrier, in total, operates 127 aircraft, including twenty-two A319s, nine A320-200s, twenty-seven A320-200neo, twenty A321-200s, four B747-400s, three B777-200(LR)s, fifteen B777-300(ER)s, and twenty-seven B787-8s.

Air India New Delhi-San Francisco flight to fly over North Pole from Aug 15

12 Aug 2019

Marking a new aviation milestone, the Air India (AI) on Monday announced its inaugural passenger flight over the North Pole region from August 15 between New Delhi and San Francisco.

The first commercial service will be operated by Captain Ranjeesh Sharma and Captain Digvijay Singh, marking the "maturing of civil aviation in India as another frontier is crossed", said Air India Western Region Director Mukesh Bhatia.

Air India had conquered this frontier in 2007, when Captain Amitabh Singh -- currently, Director (Operations) -- flew a Boeing 777 over the polar region. He had taken delivery of the brand new aircraft and flew it over the North Pole from Seattle to New Delhi, going in the record books as the first Indian pilot to notch this feat.

"Passengers will benefit from the reduced fuel consumption and a better environment from the reduced carbon emissions," Mukesh Bhatia said on the new Polar flight route.

Air India is in a unique position to offer direct (non-stop) flights between India and North America, but the Polar route between the two countries has not yet been exploited.

"Situated on opposite sides of the Northern Hemisphere, India and North America would benefit immensely by using existing North Polar routes for commercial air operations," Bhatia added.

The AI already has flights to the US from the Atlantic and Pacific routes as part of its endeavour to conserve fuel, slash travel time, improve aircraft utility and reduce carbon emissions.

According to AI, the fuel saving on the Polar route is expected to be in the region of 02 to 07 tonnes with a resultant decrease in carbon emission of 06 to 21 tonnes per flight, and is part of the initiative of the Fuel Conservation Committee of the airline.

The North Pole region has given airlines an opportunity to reach destinations previously not available for non-stop services and reduce flying times on existing routes and city pairs, he pointed out.

Increasing use of these route has resulted in major improvements in areas of aviation infrastructure like communications, air traffic control, and services supplies at remote airports.

However, most of the Polar region still falls short of the infrastructure and the logistics standards of the more widely used air-spaces, thereby offering unique opportunities laced with distinct challenges, Bhati explained.

"For instance, the area of Magnetic unreliabitlity, limited choices for diversion to alternative airports, solar radiation, fuel freezing, passenger and aircraft retrieval in case of diversions, are some specific factors requiring active mitigation to ensure equivalent levels of safety," Bhatia added.

In case of diversion of a flight on the Polar region, the AI has hired a Diversion Support Agency to assist in the aircraft and passenger retrieval.

In this context, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)'s Operations Circular 02.2019 on 'Polar Operations' clearly defines the requirements for airlines to operate in the Polar region with sufficient documentation and clear guidelines.

After the first flight over the North Pole almost 13 years ago, it was a logical progression from then to now seeking Regulatory permission to operate a passenger service on the route, he said.

Bhatia said while fuel savings could never be at the cost of passenger safety and comfort, a careful risk analysis has been conducted to ensure compliance on both before launching the flights.

The AI has secured approvals from the DGCA and FAA, crew training, weather monitoring, alternate selection and aircraft serviceability are enhanced to ensure safety in operations.

Interestingly, Polar flights have been in operation since 1937, when a Soviet pilot Valery Chkalov became the first to fly a single-engine aircraft from Moscow to Vancouver (Washington State) in the US over the North Pole covering the 8,811 kms distance in 63 hours.

Air India becomes first Indian airline to fly over North Pole

Aug 16, 2019

Celebrating probably its last Independence day as a national carrier, Air India hoisted its Boeing 777 aircraft over the North Pole to become the first Indian airline to operate commercial flights overflying the polar region.

Its Delhi-San Francisco flight, which usually overflies the Atlantic or the Pacific ocean, cut across latitudes instead on Thursday to fly over zero degree north in a feat that would probably be Air India’s last hurrah before it is thrown into the throes of privatisation.

Given the ongoing tension with the neighbour, the run-up to the polar route debut had Air India’s operations department chalk up two flight plans. “We were asked to be prepared for a Pakistan airspace closure on August 15. Had they shut down their airspace to Indian flights, we still would have flown the polar route, though with a different routing that took the aircraft over Strait of Hormuz and then northbound for the pole,” said an Air India source.

Delhi-San Francisco flight AI-173 lifted off at 4am, with about 243 passengers on board, overflew Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Russia and overflew the North Pole by 12.27pm to cross over to the other side of planet Earth.

Air India plans to get 19 grounded planes airborne by October

Aug 16, 2019

Air India is hoping to get all 19 of its grounded aircraft to rejoin its fleet by October this year, reports said. The airline's engineering department has started working on these aircraft to get them back into action in a phased manner.

Two Boeing 787 planes will be made available in the first phase, followed by four Boeing 777 aircraft in the second phase, news agency IANS quoted a senior Air India official as saying. In the last phase, 13 Airbus A320 aircraft are likely to be reintroduced in the fleet. All phases might get completed before the start of the winter schedule, the official told the news agency.

Air India had earmarked around Rs 500 crore to get its 19 grounded aircraft airborne. On a standalone basis, the state-run airline has a total fleet of 128 passenger jets.

Presently, along with trying to get back the entire strength of its fleet, Air India is planning to commence flight operations to Canada and Africa. The carrier is also looking at the feasibility of increasing flight frequency to Australia, the report said. Preparations are in full-swing to launch the Mumbai-Nairobi and Delhi-Toronto flight services from September 27 followed by the beginning of operations on Delhi-Chennai-Bali sector from October 27, the report further added.

However, Air India has terminated its plans to begin flight operations between New Delhi and Los Angeles services during the current financial year.

On the domestic front, Air India plans to start services on Mumbai-Dehradun-Varanasi-Patna and Delhi-Khajuraho-Varanasi routes, the report said.

Horrible departure timings and that too for a short to medium haul route. One cannot blame foreign carriers for inconvenient timings, Indian carriers are also guilty.

Alliance Air issues ATR72-600 dry-lease RFP

27.09.2019

Alliance Air has issued a Request For Proposals (RFP) for the longterm dry-lease of two factory-new ATR72-600s.

According to tender documentation seen by ch-aviation, the Air India (AI, Mumbai Int'l) subsidiary expects the first of the aircraft to deliver between April and June 2020 while the second is due between July and September 2020. While early deliveries are also acceptable, those beyond September will not be accepted.

Alliance Air wants the 72-seater Avions de Transport Régional turboprops on 12-year contracts. Utilization-wise, it expects them to operate 2,750 flight hours per annum, or around 2,500 cycles per annum per aircraft, on sector lengths that range between 137 and 666 kilometres.

Alliance Air currently operates regional services for Air India under the Air India Regional brand. Its fleet entails two ATR42-300s and eighteen ATR72-600s, all of which are leased from various third-party organisations. In terms of network, it serves 56 cities across India from bases at Bangalore Int'l, Chennai, Delhi Int'l, Hyderabad Int'l, Jaipur, Kolkata Int'l, Mumbai Int'l, and Vishakhapatnam.

https://ukaviation.news/air-india-to-launch-amritsar-flights-to-london-stansted/

Air India (AI/AIC) have announced that they are starting direct flights from Amritsar (ATQ/VIAR) to London Stansted (STN/EGSS) from November 2019.

The three-times per week service will operate on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Announcing the decision, Civil Aviation minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the decision was ‘dedicated to mark the 550th anniversary of Guru Nanak.

The flight will provide another vital connection to the Punjabi region from the UK and to Amritsar itself which is home to “the Golden Temple,” one of Sikhism’s most spiritually significant and most-visited Gurudwaras.

Air India already fly direct to Amritsar from Birmingham Airport (BHX/EGBB) and London Heathrow (LHR/EGLL) using Boeing 787 Dreamliners and it is expected that the Stansted flight will also use a Dreamliner.

Why are they doing this flight??? And a VFR flight operating Mon, Tues, Wed???? WTF. ATQ should have been left to a LCC to operate a narrow body. I would have rather seen AI expand their BLR-LON service as 3X to LHR and 4X to LGW. For India origin business and tourist traffic, LGW is totally fine. I actually think many business fliers might prefer a 7pm LGW departure over BA's current schedule. Also the Punjabi community is heavily concentrated near LHR. They are not traveling to STN. The Guj and other communities are much more spread out/central London focused so airports won't matter as much.

Another idiotic frequency from AI. MWF ??. Would be better if it is Wed, Fri Sun. And Stansted is not slot restricted as far as I know.
