IndiGo cancels Vijayawada int'l relaunch due in early 4Q

24.07.2019

IndiGo Airlines has cancelled its international relaunch out of Vijayawada in eastern India due on October 29, as its Singapore Changi route will not be resumed as originally planned, ch-aviation research has revealed.

Seven months after it started on December 4, 2018, operated 2x weekly onboard A320-200 equipment, IndiGo terminated its maiden international service from Vijayawada to Singapore's Changi airport at the end of May. This was because the state government of Andhra Pradesh failed to extend Viability Gap Funding (VGF) to the airline beyond the first six months.

The government, acting through the special purpose vehicle Andhra Pradesh Airports Development Corporation Limited (APADCL), had hired Indigo on the basis of paying up to INR30 million (USD435,000) towards the VGF when the load factor dipped below 50%. But it dropped the deal in June citing what it said was consistently poor demand, The Hindu newspaper reported.

India's central government granted international status to Vijayawada Airport, located at Gannavaram where National Highway 16 connects the cities of Chennai and Kolkata, in May 2017, but it was only after the state government offered VGF to encourage more airlines that IndiGo stepped forward.

Looks like Indigo is following Look East policy and adding flights from Kolkata to China, Myanmar & Vietnam. They already have Bangladesh, Thailand & Singapore. Nothing to Gulf.

You mean follow east from Kolkata only.

Also not sure if CCU-CAN route is viable daily. SpiceJet struggled from DEL to CAN route and O & D traffic is more on DEL route (and connecting) than from CCU.

What is up with these flight timings? Is it because of lack of slots at CAN or Indigo wanting to use a plane at night. I just feel like Indian carriers need to start offering more pax friendly timings.

The Hong Kong protests is taking a toll on all traffic in/out of the city and with Indigo having not much connecting traffic at CCU, can see why Indigo is pulling out rather quickly.

But the BLR flight is still on though.

https://www.ch-aviation.com/portal/news/82873-indias-indigo-airlines-eyes-tbilisi-as-next-european-route

IndiGo Airlines eyes Tbilisi as next European route

29.10.2019

IndiGo Airlines is planning to launch its second European route, to Tbilisi, in February 2020 using A321-200neo equipment, sources told the Indian newswire PTI.

The low-cost carrier has reportedly already conducted all inspections of the Georgian airport required to commence scheduled operations. However, neither the airline nor the airport would confirm the plans.

It is unclear from which hub IndiGo Airlines would serve Tbilisi. Its two main north Indian gateways at Mumbai Int'l and Delhi Int'l airports are well within the range of the type.

According to the ch-aviation schedules module, currently, IndiGo's only European destination is Istanbul New, which it serves 2x daily from Mumbai using A320-200 and A321neo equipment. At 4,840 kilometres (2,610 nautical miles) great circle distance, the route to the Turkish gateway is more than 1,000 kilometres longer than flights to Tbilisi would be.

There are currently no scheduled flights between India and Georgia.

IndiGo Airlines orders 300 A320neo Family jets

30.10.2019

IndiGo Airlines has announced it has placed a firm order with Airbus for 300 A320neo Family aircraft.

The Indian low-cost carrier said in a stock market filing that the order comprises a mix of A320neo, A321neo, and A321neo(XLR) aircraft. As of September 30, 2019, IndiGo's Airbus order backlog totalled 191 A320neo and 144 A321neo.

“This order is an important milestone, as it reiterates our mission of strengthening air connectivity in India, which will in turn boost economic growth and mobility," Ronojoy Dutta, IndiGo's Chief Executive Officer, said. "India is expected to continue with its strong aviation growth and we are well on our way to build the world’s best air transportation system, to serve more customers and to deliver on our promise of providing low fares and a courteous, hassle-free experience to them."

LImited code share agreement with Qatar. Indigo (or is it Qatar) wants to be cautious, still cannot understand one way agreement. What is the point in this ?

Hopefully this will stop Indigo from putting any more code shares with TK. India gains nothing from TK code share except feeding more traffic to IST and getting nothing in return. At least with Qatar, there is O & D traffic.

Agreed! Unless there is obvious price advantage, don't expect traffic back from TK's Eureope destinations to Indigo.

6E isn't on the GDS as yet, just like most LCCs.
Right now, Ronojoy Dutta's statement tells us that 6E's IT systems are not geared for a complete bidirectional code-share. Till this happens, 6E will still benefit from a unidirectional code-share as it will get a lot of traffic of a network carrier that otherwise cannot increase seats to India (this benefits QR, at the same time, gives a lot of business to 6E with the traffic).
As for the TK code-shares, 6E have been struggling on the IST route. The longer diversion because of the Pakistani airspace closure put pressure on either a technical stop-over, or to lighten the plane: 6E chose to go the latter way, garnering a lot of negative feedback. Seasonal unfavourable winds also would have contributed to this. What I hear is that the traffic has also been a bit light, owing the political climate in Turkey. Even if we believe Rononoy Dutta's statement in its totality, the IST route, and some unexplored destinations on a code-share beyond IST (20 of them, as initially envisaged) are not online yet. TK has been actively selilng these code-shares, possibly benefitting from 6E's low cost-base at the India end. The political climate possibly isn't expected to ease out much, with India's cold shoulders to Turkey over the latter's support to Kashmir.
Cheers, Sumantra.

Our Ameya Sir has a very nice article on the QR ones, and the TK code-shares:

A bit of a personal perspective: I was looking for cost-effective *A connections from DEL-KZN-DEL of late. To my delight, TK flights popped up, and much to my disappointment, these turned out to the the Indigo code-shares, on which I would not earn *A points. I finally opted for the one-stop SU flights, both ways.
Cheers, Sumantra.

VT-INR (MSN 3453) returned to lessor. Going to Bamboo Airways as VN-A595.

This is one of the oldest A320 of the initial 100 aircraft order.

Could be due to end of demand season, C-Check coming up, increase in delivery rate of A320neo / A321neo, crew shortage...

Relations between Turkey and India were never good, but not very bad either. But with the recent criticism of Turkey on India's Kashmir, I think it would be wise for Indigo to forget about the code shares on TK for a while, and my opinion is that GoI should force Indigo to end its relationship with TK until Turkey is neutral on Kashmir issue.

India gets nothing in return for allowing Indigo to code share with TK except more feed to IST.

With Qatar the situation is different, in general Qatari government has refrained from criticizing India on the Kashmir issue, plus there are lots of Indians who work in Qatar. This code share should be expanded to benefit Indigo.
