IndiGo to start service to China with Chengdu and Guangzhou

May 08, 2019

Expanding its international horizon, leading Indian airline IndiGo plans to start services to Chinese cities of Chengdu and Guangzhou.

Industry sources said the airline has got the nod from Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), to start services from Delhi and Kolkata.

"At this stage, we are in the process of securing the necessary approvals to operate into China, and as soon as we receive all the requisite permissions from the Governments to operate, we will inform our key stakeholders accordingly," an IndiGo spokesperson told Moneycontrol.

"We are evaluating all such opportunities to expand our network and provide many more choices to our customers," the executive added. The spokesperson didn't provide a timeline for the services to China.

IndiGo eventually may have 14 flights to China.

In 6 months, IndiGo plans to offer cheaper flights tickets to Europe

15 May 2019

IndiGo, which currently flies as far as Istanbul, is mapping out an ambitious long-distance network. The airline aims to start one-stop trips further into Europe within six months, Chief Executive Officer Ronojoy Dutta said in an interview in New Delhi last week.

IndiGo has captured almost half the Indian market in just over a decade by offering cheap, punctual flights -- and charging extra for almost anything else. Dutta’s long-haul plans are forcing a product overhaul to help passengers endure longer flights and he’s considering everything from extra snacks to a brand-new business class.

“Once you get to six, seven, eight hours, the body gets tired, people need to use the washrooms more, people need to eat more frequently, all of those things change," Dutta said. “We have to redesign our product. Is it more pitch, is it more food, is it more hot towels, is it a business class?"

It’s not clear what IndiGo’s business class would potentially offer or how much it might cost. The airline must meet other challenges too: Fuel is typically among an airline’s biggest expenses and IndiGo faces rising oil prices as it considers setting up a long-distance network.

IndiGo wants to operate one-stop flights to cities like London from New Delhi, while flying non-stop to countries like China, Vietnam, Myanmar and Russia. It’s in talks with Airbus SE to buy a yet-to-be-released longer version of the European planemaker’s newest narrow-body jet. The airline is preparing to place a “large" order, Dutta said.

IndiGo to start flights to China from September 15

IndiGo will start flights to China with a daily on the Delhi-Chengdu route from September 15. IndiGo is also likely to start flying to Guangzhou this year.

Chengdu will be IndiGo’s 19th international destination and the first non-stop service between Chengdu and Delhi. IndiGo chief commercial officer William Boulter said: “This is truly a milestone moment for all of us at IndiGo… currently the India-China route is underserved by Indian carriers. With our plan to operate non-stop daily flights to this Chengdu we are providing the much needed connectivity between the two destinations. China is a market with immense potential and holds prominent trade, cultural and tourism values. We hope to further strengthen this relation by announcing our entry into China.”

The airline said in a statement: “In line with its international expansion strategy, IndiGo has enhanced connectivity in Asia, Europe and the Middle East. The airline offers a total of 18 international destinations out of which 11 destinations were announced in 2018-19… Istanbul, Jeddah and Dammam have been the latest additions. Along with this, 2019 has also witnessed IndiGo’s first codeshare agreement with Turkish Airlines, one of the largest airlines in Europe. The codeshare agreement has benefited the customers with extended connectivity to 12 destinations in Europe.”

Do airlines coordinate their purchases with the GoI ? May be Modi govt can use this as a leverage for reducing the steel and aluminum tariffs that the Trump administration imposed on India in 2017.

In addition Trump administration and India have a minor trade tiff, with Trump admin withdrawing some trade preferences to India and India imposing tariffs are some agri products in retaliation. Of course the Trump admin has trade wars with almost every country in the world.

IndiGo's Delhi-Istanbul flight faces 3 airspace curbs

Jun 23, 2019

One flight, three airspace restrictions. The longest flight currently in IndiGo's international network - Delhi-Istanbul - was supposed to be launched as a nonstop from this March as a direct using the airline's Airbus A320 Neos.

But first Pakistan closed its airspace on February 27 for overflying due to which it could not take the straight route. As a result, the flight has been going one-step via Doha right from its launch.

The second restriction was in the form of the airspace blockade imposed on Qatar by its neighbours. This meant once the IndiGo flight takes off from Doha for Istanbul, it could not enter Saudi Arabia Enroute to Istanbul. Qatar is aerially cut off from most of its Gulf neighbours. As a result, the flight would fly across the Persian Gulf, enter Iran and then head to Turkey.

Now this route had to be again changed on Saturday with the restriction on Persian Gulf of Oman area in Tehran airspace. "The flight will completely bypass Iranian airspace. We will take off from Doha, enter Kuwait, then Iraq and head straight to Ankara side on its way to Istanbul," said a senior pilot. The IndiGo Istanbul-Doha-Delhi flight will take the same way on the way back. This flight will not overfly Syria.

IndiGo says continue to eye international operations of Air India at right fleet, right price

June 25, 2019

IndiGo continues to be interested in international operations of Air India at the right price and with right fleet size, chief executive officer Ronojoy Dutta told CNBC-TV18 in an exclusive interview.

"At Air India, there are huge risks but also huge rewards. I believe the preliminary information memorandum will come in July. Hypothetically, if someone would be taking the domestic operations, then we would be interested in the international segment at the right fleet and the right price," Dutta told CNBC-TV18.

After failing to divest its 76 percent stake in national carrier Air India last year, the government is looking at another attempt to sell Air India in order to meet its divestment receipts.

"The history of mergers in the airline industry is not very great. Kingfisher Airlines bought Air Deccan, Jet Airways bought Sahara Airlines, neither of those turned out to be good investments. So, we're not going to rush into this, frankly. There's a lot of things that give us pause. There's the huge debt, thousands of crores sitting there. Buying aircraft at the right price is very important. Did they buy all the fleet at the right price? Or will we be stuck with high-cost aircraft, is an issue. So, these are all things to look at," Dutta said.

"But at the same time, is it attractive to say they fly to Heathrow, they have slots there. You get more slots in Delhi and Mumbai. You get traffic rights to many cities including the Middle-East, that's all very attractive. So, I think there are some rewards but a huge amount of risk," he added.

IndiGo had shown interest in buying Air India last year as well but it had clearly stated that it is only eyeing the international operations and was not keen to take over the domestic part.

Why would Indigo need AI's international ops? Is it worth paying that much depreciated planes and rights? Instead, make use of rights AI is unable to operate and use planes of your choice.

DOH is just a technical stop for refueling AFAIK. I'm not sure if 6E has 5th freedom rights on DOH-IST.
