Air France brings Joon brand to India

February 28, 2018

Air France is introducing Joon brand on the Paris-Mumbai route in place of its mainline service. The move comes close on heels of intensified commercial co-operation between Air France and Jet Airways.

Joon was launched last year to target younger travellers and as a part of airline's efforts to lower costs and win passengers which it lost to its more nimble European and Gulf rivals. Joon will take over Air France flights on the route from June 18.

The Joon flight will be operated with a three-class Airbus A340 aircraft which includes economy, premium economy and business class.

However, the business class beds in the Joon aircraft are not fully flat.
There will be no charge for meals and one piece of luggage on the Joon flights. Liquor will be free for business class customers but can be purchased by economy and premium economy class passengers, sources said.

At present Air France operates three-class Airbus A330 or Boeing 777 aircraft. Jet Airways flies a three-class Boeing 777 plane on the route which also includes first class service.

An airline spokesperson said as the flights are marketed under an Air France code, customers can earn and spend miles with Flying Blue, the Air France-KLM group’s frequent flyer programme, and enjoy the same advantages as with an Air France flight. Customers will benefit from new cabins on board the Airbus A340s equipped with the latest-generation individual touch-screens to enjoy some one hundred films, the spokesperson added.

So what is the net affect for Pax? The A343 isn't lie flat right? I guess AF was running their 777 planes to BOM for awhile with the new business class. Too bad the timings are not different than Jet's flights. Would have been better to give choice. I like Jet's 9am departure from BOM to LHR.

Most probably because the Skyteam high rollers in the front of the plane have been giving AF the heave-ho ever since KLM started BOM-AMS? So AF is now targeting the low-end tourist crowd.

While AF is getting good reviews and their service has improved by all accounts, transiting through CDG is still a big undesirable for many.

So I've trying to figure out what Joon will be long haul. They really don't have much info on their website. They say the planes are all upgraded. Will have new IFE (most of AF's planes have not so good IFE). So maybe this ends up being an upgrade rather than a downgrade. AF keeps saying Joon isn't LCC it's a lower cost base for them. I fly AF a ton (because I am DL Skyteam). Their meals and snack service in J always underwhelm (the snack service of little bites on the CDG-JFK flights are just plain gross). I also don't identify with their version of posh service (I actually like Jet and DL - find it more genuine). In coach they will provide free meals plus the opportunity to buy snacks (I think this is a win for pax). So let's see how this all pans out.

Caliguy,

The AF 772s whivch came to BOM had the new product, AF did a media event to introduce the 772er product which had their best IFE and J beds

I havent flown AF since 2011 so i will leave the service bits to u, since u have certainly flown them more recently

I also heard the terminal 2E transit at CDG has grown leaps and bounds compared to what it was a few years ago?

Also as per the AF internal report a few 359s are headed the way of Joon

Terminal 2E is fine. The connection walk can be long and a bit confusing. Also I think 9W is in a far terminal and the connection is long. But might have changed. AMS is just better for connections. Also in LHR you have to take a bus between VS/DL and 9W, but I still don’t mind it because everything is in English

Good heavens!

That is one bad livery.

A bit of red on it would have made it more appealing.

I am sure that asking premium economy customers to pay for alcohol will not go well unless AF prices these tickets at a very low price. Premium economy is not that inexpensive and these customers would simply go with other airlines then.

So they posted just ONE pic of the Joon business class. Sad to see it is not the new 1-2-1 config. It's 2-2-2. At least they are lie flat version of the old AF seat and they put in new IFE (that was actually the worst part of the old seats). I find the AF seat to be quite spacious. My main gripe on the A380 is that the seat is not lie flat and I slide down while I sleep (or not sleep). You at least have space the turn and move while sleeping. The planes have wifi for entertainment but unclear if they have internet. I actually think AF should change the timing of this flight now that it is Joon. Move it to an early evening CDG departure. Give some variety in flight options. I know Jet couldn't make the evening flight flight work. But maybe Joon can. Plus my guess is that premium pax will migrate over to 9W.

I can't believe they're sending "Joon" to India's financial capital. I guess premium traffic doesn't necessarily gravitate towards AF on this route.

Ok so first video of there business class - their is also a premium Econ video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlIRAbTLPyM

Good - they redid the seat fabric and put in modern IFE. The look is fresh and modern
Bad - seats are 175 degrees angle flat - what are they thinking. I have flown these seats and they are actually much better than AF's A380 but not as good as the new lie flat J class. That said it is totally not competitive on this route.

My guess is they are segmenting the market with (1) AF flyers who just need to fly a French airline will stay with Joon, (2) premium pax to 9W w/lie flat J and F classes, (3) Indian flyers who have to fly Indian to 9W and (4) non business rich people who fly discounted J to Joon? If they truly offer discounted J from BOM, I think this could totally work. BOM has a lot of rich families that fly abroad a lot on discounted J. Looking at my family (which is not the right way to sample), they seem to fly EK because it is close to the cheapest when buying form a travel agent and flies to a good amount of cities in Europe. Would love discounted J sale fares from the US (seems like they rarely happen). Maybe Joon will change this (obviously with one leg on AF or DL)

Oh and as an aside - those horrible angle flat A380s fly JFK-CDG. For the summer schedule, they fly twice a day during prime hours. Im going to MUC they end of Sept, and literally have a 2.5 hour stop over in CDG to avoid flying the A380 - flying DL 333. But talk about sub standard product going to financial capital.

I guess not a bad idea to put premium product on a fully depreciated A340. Its inside what matters so long as tickets are affordable. If you want to pay more, fly Dreamliner.
