Did The IAF Tweet 'Photoshopped' Pics Of Royal Air Force’s Aircraft On Independence Day?

20 August 2017

The Indian Air Force allegedly photoshopped pictures of Britain’s Royal Air Force’s aircraft and shared them on Twitter on Independence Day claiming they were Tempest aircraft flying over the Red Fort on August 15, 1947. There was also an attempt to mask the RAF emblem.

In one of the tweets on this Independence Day, IAF wrote: “YearsBack :15Aug1947- 12 Tempest aircraft, flew past Ramparts of RedFort as PanditNehru PM India unfurled #NationalFlag for the 1st time.” It also attached the pictures of the aircraft.

Col Vinayak Bhat (Retd), a satellite imagery expert, who first spotted it, told Outlook that the first image was a photoshopped picture.

Bhat tweeted: “Happy Independence Day #India #IAF must shed shackles of #RAF https://twitter.com/IAF_MCC/status/897416954842972160 … @IAF_MCC uses PSed pics 501Sqn BradwellBay 10/18/1944”

According to him, the original picture was taken on October, 18, 1944, when three Hawker Tempest V aircraft (EJ589 SD-J, EJ599 SD-W and EJ763 SD-X) of 501 Squadron RAF were flying over Bradwell Bay. The picture is available with Getty Images, an American stock photo agency. Also, the Red Fort is not visible in the ground below as claimed in the tweet.

Later he found that the second picture was also not what the IAF claimed to be.

The IAF also allegedly used a picture of RAF Typhoons aircraft, calling them “Tempest aircraft”.

Replying to the IAF tweet, Col Bhat, wrote: "So @IAF MCC has really messed up everything.Pic on right has Typhoons not Tempest. Both badly PSed fm possibly Pinterest pics. The Q is why?"
