India's Star Air eyes 1Q18 launch using ERJ-145s

Star Air (India) (Belgaum) is an Indian start-up planning to commence scheduled passenger flights during the first quarter of 2018.

An airline statement says it has already secured two ERJ-145s which will deliver towards year-end in time for a proposed February 2018 launch.

In March this year, parent firm Ghodawat Enterprises applied to the Indian government for permission to operate a Scheduled Air Transport Service. In its application, the firm said Star Air would run regular passenger flights from Belgaum to Mumbai Int'l, Delhi Int'l, Chennai, and Tirupati initially before expanding further afield in the Indian market.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is said to have already issued a No Objection Certificate (NOC).

Star Aviation has placed orders for pre-owned three 50-seater ERJ 145 aircraft to service their routes under RCS. “Embraer will deliver the first aircraft in couple of months,” Pereira said, adding that the regional airline has made future commitments with it for used aircraft. “We are in talks with several other airlines to unlock opportunities with E 175 for RCS routes,” Pereira added.

This is not a very easy aircraft to operate in terms of the operating costs, even for a regional airline. More so, given the current barrel prices. I wonder why a startup is venturing out for this type, given the safer choice of an AT7-6 if they want the capacity, plus Engineering works advantages with lots of operators of this type in India.
Cheers, Sumantra.

Sumantra, wasn't there another relatively recent ERJ 145 operator in India, that flopped. The name escapes me.

I don't think any one had brought an ERJ145 anytime recently to India. The last operator to fly an ERJ was AirCosta - they flew E170s & E190s.

Zoom Air operates CRJs.

India's Star Air preps for launch with UDAN ops

Star Air (India) (Belgaum) has recently been hiring ground and cabin staff ahead of its planned launch on three routes out of Hubli in the south-western Indian state of Karnataka, the Bangalore Mirror has reported. Its maiden services are planned under the umbrella of UDAN, the Indian government's subsidy scheme for flights to un- or underserved airports.

The Indian start-up backed by the Sanjay Ghodawat Group had previously planned to launch in February 2018 using two ERJ-145s. Despite the delay, the carrier has not changed its fleet plans, although it is currently unclear when exactly it plans to start operations.

During the second round of UDAN/RCS route allocations in early 2018, the start-up has won rights to fly out of Hubli to each of Tirupati, Hindon, and Pune.

Previously, Star Air had also announced plans to launch purely commercial routes not covered by the UDAN scheme, such as flights out of Belgaum to each of Mumbai Int'l, Delhi Int'l, Chennai, and Tirupati. It is unclear at this moment whether the carrier still intends to expand in such a way and when that would happen.

Star Air secures AOP, preps for launch

04.01.2019

Star Air has announced it has been granted its Air Operator's Permit (AOP) by the Indian Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The licence allows the start-up to operate scheduled passenger flights.

In a statement, Star Air said its first route would cover daily flights from its Bangalore Int'l base to Hubli using E145 equipment. Other touted destinations include Tirupati, Pune, and Delhi/Hindon.

As part of its certification process, it used a single E145, VT-GSC (msn 14500845).

It possibly has something to do with a number of EMB 145s becoming available for lease at fairly low rates. Many relatively new frames (around 8-10 years old) retired by various airlines recently have found their way into the lease market.

Star Air to start operations from 25th January

Sanjay Ghodawat group promoted Star air will start operations from 25th January 2019. The airline will utilize its sole aircraft – an Embraer E-145 registered VT-GSC for the operations. The airline will start services to Hubballi, Tirupati and Belgavi, from its base in Bengaluru. The flights to Belgavi are effective 5th February 2019.

The airline did its proving flights between Bengaluru and Coimbatore as well as Bengaluru and Tirupati and got its Scheduled Commuter Airline permit in the first week of January. The airline’s IATA code is OG. The National Civil Aviation Policy 2016, allows for a scheduled commuter airline having a code share with other airlines for domestic and international routes.

The airline will be betting big on the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) – UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) where it has won some routes. These include Tirupati – Hubli, Hubli – Hindon (Delhi), Hubli – Pune. While Hindon is an active Air Force Station and is not yet ready for civil operations, the airport at Pune – under the Indian Air Force is short of slots. While these two are sorted, the airline will start operations to Tirupati.

Star Air in talks with Embraer to buy aircraft

21 Feb 2019

Star Air, which operates under the government sponsored regional connectivity scheme (RCS), is in talks to purchase a number of aircraft from Brazilian aerospace major Embraer, Star Air's chief executive Simran Singh Tiwana said on Thursday.

The Bengaluru-based airline, which currently has two 50-seater Embraer ERJ 145, plans to deploy the new aircraft on 22 routes the airline won during the RCS auctions.

Tiwana, who didn't specify the investment required to make the purchases, said that the aircraft purchases will be funded internally by the airline. He added that an announcement in this regard will likely be made in a fortnight.

Star Air, which is owned by the Sanjay Ghodawat Group, is also in talks with the authorities at the Mumbai airport to start flights from the city.

"We are trying to get some slots in bigger airports. We are trying to get at least one slot in Mumbai," Tiwana said.

Star Air to acquire three more E145s

30.08.2019

Star Air has signed a firm order agreement with Embraer for three E145s. The Indian regional carrier, which currently operates two E145s, said in a statement the three added jets would join its fleet in November of this year.

Overall, Star Air is planning to increase its fleet size to 10 aircraft by the end of 2020.

"By cementing this partnership with Embraer, we will be ideally positioned to generate greater value for all of our stakeholders," Sanjay Ghodawat, Chairman - Star Air, said. "We will continue to add more aircraft to our fleet in the time to come which will help us activate all UDAN routes and also a few non-UDAN sectors."

Using its existing E145 fleet, Star Air is serving the western coastal and southern regions of India through Ahmedabad, Mumbai Int'l, Belgaum, Hubli, Bangalore Int'l, and Tirupati. It is a part of Sanjay Ghodawat Group (SGG), a diversified Indian conglomerate, with interests in aviation, consumer products, education, energy, food processing, floriculture, mining, realty, software and textiles.

Kalaburagi, India to gain first scheduled route

20.11.2019

Star Air will provide the first scheduled service at Kalaburagi, when it launches a 3x weekly service from Bangalore Int'l on November 24, subject to gaining regulatory approval.

The Indian city, which is also known as Gulbarga, is around 308 nautical miles (570 kilometres) north of Bengaluru, and also in Karnataka State. The Indian regional carrier will use its fleet of three E145s (one of which is currently on maintenance) on the domestic sector.

Flights will leave Bengaluru at 1230L before arriving at its destination at 1335L. After a brief 20-minute turnaround, the 49-seater will depart Kalaburagi at 1355L and touch down in the Karnataka State capital at 1455L.

Star Air also recently started 3x weekly scheduled flights between Hubli and Delhi Hindon on November 6, joining Heritage Aviation with services at the facility, a converted military airport designed to relieve congestion at Delhi Int'l.

According to the airline's website, it offers services from nine Indian airports, including Goa Dabolim, Mumbai Int'l and Ahmedabad.

Must say their booking site looks nice. Basic but functional. And they seem to be connecting a lot of small towns - Kalaburgi, Ghaziabad, Hubli, Belgaum, Kishangarh etc

I hope they last. They should do ok with their ERJs as long as they don't get overambitious and order 100+ A320NEOS within a year.

Here's a review of Star Air by blogger Josh Cahill. Seems like a nice setup, with very personal attention being given to passengers. I hope they continue like that.

Right, only a matter of time before IndiGo realises the potential in Belgavi, Bellary and Kalaburagi, and bases some of its ATRs in Bangalore. Star Air will then go the TruJet way.

Star Air to lease two E175s

22.07.2022

Star Air (India) (S5, Belgaum) has ordered two E175s from Nordic Aviation Capital during the 2022 Farnborough Air Show.

While the deal was covered by India's Business Standard, neither of the two parties published a statement nor did they respond to ch-aviation's request for confirmation.

The first Embraer regional jet of the pair will deliver in September 2022 and the second one in October. They will allow the airline to expand to longer domestic routes.

The ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows that Star Air currently operates five owned E145s. The privately-owned carrier backed by the Sanjay Ghodawat multi-industry conglomerate deploys the regional jets out of its bases at Belgaum and Bangalore Int'l airports on regional routes across central and western India.

Star Air confirms lease of two E175s

28.09.2022

Star Air (India) (S5, Belgaum) has firmed an earlier Letter of Intent to dry lease two E175s from Nordic Aviation Capital.

The preliminary agreement was reached during the 2022 Farnborough Air Show, although neither the carrier nor the lessor publicly announced it at that time.

The carrier did not disclose the timeline for the induction of the two aircraft nor its business plans. Its current fleet comprises one EMB-145LI and four EMB-145LRs, the ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows. Star Air operates scheduled domestic flights in India with its main base at Belgaum and a secondary focus city in Bangalore Int'l.

Nordic Aviation Capital did not disclose the identity of the aircraft.

Star Air doubles E175 order

06.01.2023

Star Air (India) (S5, Belgaum) ordered two incremental E175s in December 2022, increasing its future fleet of the type to four, the carrier said in a social media wrap-up of 2022.

The regional carrier would lease the additional two aircraft from Nordic Aviation Capital. The ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows that Star Air currently operates five E145s, which it owns, and secured its first two E175s from Nordic Aviation Capital in the second half of 2022. The first of the pair is slated to be OY-YEF (msn 17000852), a 2.3-year-old aircraft formerly operated by Belavia (B2, Minsk National) and currently under maintenance at Bydgoszcz. Star Air plans to take it and induct it into service in the first quarter of 2023.

Star Air operates scheduled flights in southern and eastern India, mainly out of Belgaum and Bangalore Int'l airports.

https://www.ch-aviation.com/portal/news/127795-indias-star-air-debuts-e175-flight-operations

Star Air debuts E175 flight operations

19.05.2023

Star Air has deployed the first of four E175LRs into revenue service, with VT-GSI (msn 17000782) debuting on the Bangalore International - Hyderabad International - Jamnagar route on May 13. CEO Singh Tiwana says the successful induction of the aircraft type sets a new standard for regional travel in India.

Star Air, which is owned by the Sanjay Ghodawat Group, is a regional airline set up in 2019. To date, it has operated E145 stock, namely one EMB-145LI and four EMB-145LRs. Last year, Star Air signed agreements to lease the four E170s, acquired on leases from Nordic Aviation Capital. Star Air says the type will address the need for more capacity, improve the passenger experience, expand its regional network, and connect to more places across India.

VT-GSI was ferried into Bangalore in February. Since then, a second E170 has arrived. The ch-aviation fleets advanced module identifies this aircraft as VT-CSJ (msn 17000852). "We are connecting slightly longer routes which are the best connected by air. That’s one edge we have over turboprop aircraft," Tiwana told India's LiveMint outlet. "Although costs are higher (for ATR), passenger comfort will be better and reliability is higher."

Until May 23, the E175LR will operate the the Bangalore International - Hyderabad International - Jamnagar - Bangalore International triangle three times a week before then going daily. In addition to Bangalore, Star Air also has a base at Begaum. From both bases, the airline flies to Ahmedabad, Kishangarh, Indore, Jodhpur, Kalaburagi, Mumbai International, Surat, Tirupati, Jamnagar, Hyderabad, Nagpur, Bhuj, Bidar, and Kolhapur. Star Air also advises it is commencing services from Bangalore and Begaum Airports to Jaipur this week.
